So I know there’s been a lot of debate on how to make Town Clothes more worthwhile as a feature, as well as a request from a fair amount from we the playerbase to allow for any class to wear any armor. I’m not sure if this type of idea has been posted before, and if it has, please smack me and disregard this post! But, I have an idea that I think people might like. :>

The big debate, as far as I can see, seems to be ‘Hey, but if you allow any class to wear any armor, there’s going to be a lot of unfairness in WvW/PvP and a lot of confusion in PvE’. There’s also the other end of the debate: Those who want more freedom in their outfits, particularly for roleplaying and social interaction.

I figured there’s a happy medium to be had here, though, via improving the Town Clothes tab through a couple of (imaginably minor) adjustments…

Suggestion #1: Maybe rename the town clothes tab to the ‘Appearance’ tab. Expand the number of slots for outfit pieces in the Town Clothes tab.
*Six total armor slots, as well as a Primary Hand and Off-Hand weapon slot.
*You can wear weapons outside of your class-type here as well, but they will obviously be inoperable as they would be purely cosmetic attachments to your character model.
*You could wear your aquatic weapons (Spears / Tridents / Spearguns etc.) in your weapon slot and it will show up on the model of your character in or out of water.

Suggestion #2: Add an in-game vendor with basic, ‘blank canvas’ town clothing items for each of the new slots in the Appearance Tab. A shirt and jeans and boots or what have you, and a wooden sword, a wooden shield, a wooden staff etc.
*These should be purchasable for a small amount of either gems or coin.
*You should be able to hold as many sets of these ‘blank canvas’ items as you want, for the next part of the suggestion:
*Allow the use of some type of transmutation stone (Fine, Basic, or some new type of stone) to transmute ANY type of armor class onto ANY type of character class. So for example, you can run around in town or into roleplay events or social areas as a Guardian in cloth armor, or a mesmer in plate, or a ranger in a unique combination of town clothes if you wanted! Obviously it would fade the instant you enter combat/an area of WvW or PvP/dungeons, etc.

I think this could be a good way to implement cross-class armor customization as well as add to the transmutation and town clothes systems. What do you think? Post your thoughts and additions below, please! :>

I have a similar hope for the future of town clothes. I like the idea of a transmutation stone to turn items of armor into town clothes without stats.

I am amused by the idea of calling them “Pacifist Transmutation Stones.”

I would spend gems to acquire transmutation stones that would allow me to put on cloth armor as “town clothes.” There are some wonderful outfits out there that I’d gladly strip the stats off of to wear to RP events.

I’d gladly pay the “fine transmutation stone” price to acquire some cloth armor as town clothing.

The problem with town clothes is there are very few to choose from. Since all are pretty much the same (depending on race), there’s no reason to wear them/show them off. The only unique town clothes are the holiday ones, but those are only appropriate during that holiday season.

Actually there have been quite a few town clothes in the gem store, other than the holiday ones, there is a pirate one, a lot of hats (including some free ones that were only available during a short period of time) and the chef outfit (which is the only racial town clothes other than the ones you start with).

However, we do need a lot more, especially racial ones.

Yes but those are “costumes” rather than actual clothing.

Yeah, you’re right. Some parts of the costumes (especially the chef one) can be combined with the cultural town clothes you start out with, it’s not good enough but at least there’s some customization possible so far.

They really should add all the clothes you can see in the cities though.

I have to dissagree with the ability to wear clothes of other classes, appearance or otherwise, it’s just nice to be able to look at a person and be able to tell what class they are, and that would become even more annoying with this game’s inability to examine someone’s gear. However I fully agree with making town clothes more like an appearance set in which you can transmute your other gear to have 2 different looks, perhaps a warning system implemented so you dont go into combat wearing your statless gear though, lol. And you should be able to wear any gear in the town clothes gear slots, not just the stuff specified as town clothes.

Yeah, I agree that armor should be matched to class. I feel like it’s almost a work uniform/status symbol, whereas town clothes are where the personality comes in.
