with the diversity of ethnicys that this game has and the many languages that we all speak, and dont understand it would be great to have an auto translation application available for gamers so we can then party with other people from other nations and truely help each other and become a closer community of gamers. I cant possibly expect everyone to know understand and speak in english even on an american server. plus we need the other time zone gamers to keep the wvw map fight going so we need the diverse groups…but we dont have a translator to talk to them without using google or some other form…but even then i dont know how to type in the languages used to even make a translation possible and by the time i do get it translated after coppyed correctly the conversation would have been long over with.

So Im suggesting that ther be some sort of auto translation put into the settings tab so to the gamer of choice can then say he/she wants all text to be translated into his/her main language…meaning if i could put a check mark on auto translation and then click on translate to english in a scroll down box then id be extremely happy and id gladly pay for it if it came out as part of the next expansion or even just of its own accord…it would be immensly helpful to communicate with everyone cause then the other person could then translate my english say into their chinese.

PLease take this into consideration there has got to be a way to do this and this would be the first game to ever do it and id be forever greatful and this would dramatically increase the moral accross each server if we could just symply communicate with each other.

Thanks for all the hard and continous work you all do.

I admit this would be a good idea…… but. Implementing a translator that would translate any language into the language you want (most likely by a selection in settings) would be very tough.

Reason being, people do not speak perfect sentences in a game. ( okay some might but you know what I mean). Slang/ accronyms/ misspellings would be very hard to program into a translation program. ( Ever try slang in google translate… then translate it back to ur self … its kinda funny sometimes).

Not to mention with thousands of Dialects of hundreds of languages across the world each with there own sentence structure and word types ( verb, noun, adj… ect) and some with words mean totally different things in one language translated around can come out wrong(ex. wound -> Let’s go kill a boss. = japanese; = The will go to kill the boss.)

I like the idea so that we could all understand each other. But with all the gamer slang/ dialects/languages and tbh all the misspellings people do (I know I am horrible about it). Plus, the size of the program that would talk to a server that would hold the translations would not only be ginormous. It would cause lag in the chat of the game bc some thing would have to read everything we input then guess its meaning then translate to a setting that the user has set on their box. which would mean that the person with the slowest connection to the server would control the speed for the conv. just because they have to wait to find out what is said and in a crisis moment that could be bad lol.

Love the idea just atm( <-perfect example right there) I personally think it would be impractical.

ugh I started typing a good response and got ate. Short reply is, yes its a good idea. But FFXI did this very thing so it would not be the first game to do it.

It does take some time to get your message out there, but what was done in FF, if you dont know, was they had a set list of generic phrases: Hello, Nice to meet you, Goodbye, Do you want to group? Meet us at… and so forth. Also, the names of places were in there, along with spells and skill and such. So when you started typing the phrase or location you hit TAB and the the things that fit what you typed would show up and you would select what you wanted. Granted it took a few extra seconds but when you really learned what phrases you needed you typed exactly what you needed. Same for locations, you learned to spell what you needed to get the one you wanted. Then when you selected it , it would show up in your chat log with red and green brackets around it and what was in the brackets would show up in the players language.

So you dont need to worry about slang and all that , as the game would only have and translate what was needed.

When it comes to gaming and making parties you really just need the basics to get someone to meet you or join up for something. I don’t think it’s impractical as it was done very well in FFXI, just would take alot of time. If they start small it could be a great feature. I am also assuming that if someone links a waypoint or POI, or Item in chat… that if someone is playing on a different language client, that it shows up correctly for them anyways.

I guess you do have a good point there. I tend to forget to KISS things (KISS =Keep It Simple Stupid. for those who don’t know) ( not keeping it simple is why I lose so many points in college a lot of the time), and I can see how it would help a lot if someone was in language classes. (Heavens knows I have learned more Spanish in video games then in a class room). Also, starting off small like you said disney (nice name btw) would help them know more on how to do it for every one.

Maybe if they had the servers with different languages on them so that instead of translating what was on the client side the servers would just translate each other, if they were connected at Anet then it would be a whole lot faster.

:)

thanks for the complement on the name. I used to use Yensid , which was the wizards name in Fantasia. Not many get that yensid is disney backwards.

I dont know how it would work client or server side… I’m not that smart when it comes to that. Im thinking it was the player/client side, as many updates included all the new stuff they would add. Guessing that because if it was on the server they would not need to add those to updates to your computer…but what do I know. But if you get a chance to see how FFXI did it, I’m sure you would like it. I know they had home worlds and they would have players from all over the world on that world. That communication tool was invaluable.

If you could let us copy the chat text and then use Google translate it will be a big step forward and easier to implement then the in-game translator

Plugging a computer translation system into the chat system might seem like a workable idea. Until you consider that MMO terminology often uses english words in ways different to the way everyone else uses those words. Lets take the word mob as an example. Look at all the definitions wikipedia offers. Excluding the acronyms, every single one is for a group except for the one we use which refers to a single entity.

Or you could check dictionary.com where all the definitions refer to groups.

Machine translation is bad enough with regular english. Asking it to handle the bizarre MMO specific slang and it will be worse. Especially since I can’t see ANET investing the money required to correct those problems.
