I was thinking of ways that could better comunicate what the player has to do for things like holidays or content patches like the upcoming lost shores updates, as well as how to get people to go into the world(lower level zones) more, and I had this idea.

Make an ingame newspaper, it could contain all relevant information on holiday events or newly added content that may not be easily noticable. Added a new jumping puzzle? report it in game, in the news paper. It doesn’t have to give too many details, just enough to inform players that it is there, and send them in the right direction.
The news paper could also have a section that’s updated daily that reports on a rare or not very well known event, and completing the event on the day it’s featured could give extra rewards (I think there was an NPC in gw1 that did somethign similar, where you had to find him hiding in the world).

The newspaper could either be built into the UI, or they could make you buy it for a few copper at a vendor.
They could go even further with it and have a newsprint per area. Have a krytan paper that you can buy in Divinity’s Reach, a Shiverpeaks paper you buy in Hoelbrake, etc, and a general paper you buy in Lion’s Arch. They could even use it for some lore stories as articles in the paper.

Tyria is not really at the age where news papers woud be used. Information is spread through word of mouth and letters. I think the letters are fine as is, it gives the information to players directly without forcing them back to a capital city.

Doesn’t literally have to be a newspaper, just an on-demand in-game information source. In game mail is fine for some things, but having constant mail clutter because everything is sent through it isn’t ideal.

Plus the pigeons must have been exhausted carrying letters to every single player across Tyria 4 times during the Halloween event.

I personally dont view it as clutter. It’s there and then as more letters are recieved from in game mail, it’s gone. what’s passed has passed.

I think they have more than one pigeon per person in tyria, so the birds are fine.

Well, guys, the answer clearly lies with the Asura and their magitek(?) screens. Honestly, IG news being disseminated by a new UI panel skinned to resemble the Asura’s holo-screens would be a neat addition.

That would be good.

Would be nice actually to get the game news in the game rather than looking at the launcher or twitter feed.

Reading the title made me remember Elder scrolls: Oblivion, where you can get newspapers on recent events etc. ;p (And see myself on front page as a hero…..good ol times)

Or a town crier … remember the guy from Tanished Haven — Shing Jea Sherman? It could be a NPC who wanders around shouting out the news of the day, but also touting random achievements for players in the area …

“That Legendary Vanquisher is one bad mother… Shut my mouth! But I’m talkin’ ’bout <Character name>. Can you dig it?”

“<Character name> is in the house! Give it up for the <Party Animal rank> and shed your armor, people. It’s a Canthan toga party! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!”

Whew! What’s that smell? Oh, why it’s <Character name> the <Drunkard rank>. Hide your ale, people."

And if you missed it, you could Press “F” him and be able to get a recap of the news …

I would love to see notice boards outside the taverns. There should be 2 or more. 1 for game related news from AN. One for local events or NPCs to talk to and 1 for players to post whatever.
