Incorporating GW1 into GW2
PS. Also, (maybe) People should be able to choose whether they want a second profession along with their first one-I thought that was Really cool in GW1. I was a Mesmer/Monk and was able to heal when I needed to. And with fighting a huge boss, (Especially if you make them harder) that would be very helpful.
um, yeah, no. there were things that anet changed from gw1 to gw2 that i thoroughly approve of, and this is one of them. i think it’s commendable that they put us in a position of learning how to play what we’re given, and succeed or lose on our merit in being able to play it that way. realize it or not, that is a challenge, and i for one REALLY enjoy the ability to rise to, and overcome, challenges.
It’s not REALLY a challenge if the weapon chooses the same skills over and over for you to play with. I’m pro choice and I would rather choose what skills I use, and what weapon I use. And I feel that I should be able to switch my skills when I feel like trying something else out and still have a strong weapon.
I’m honestly still on the fence about the weapon skills setup in GW2
Part of the fun in GW1 was creating your own unique build utilizing a handful out of literally thousands of possible skill choices.
Now I understand and actually do completely agree with the reasoning behind the skills being tied to the weapons.
This decision was made because of classes like the Warrior, Assassin, Ranger, Dervish, and Paragon where they had an assortment of skills that required a specific weapon type to be used. By linking the weapon skills to the weapons themselves they eliminated this dependency, and allow these classes to switch between weapon types without fear of being locked out of half of their skills.
On the other hand, this created a major limitation on builds.
Personally I’d call for a compromise between the 2 systems over what we have now.
A system where you have an assortment of skills available for each 2-5 slot per weapon. The reason for 2-5 instead of 1-5 is that I believe the auto-attack on each weapon is fine how it is, plus it’d be way to much work to create 3 or 4 alternative auto attacks per weapon, per class.
There should be a minimum of 3 options per slot, recommended 5+ though, this gives us a sufficient amount of variation between builds. We should be able to differ our builds from the next guy with the same weapons in the same class… Also, each weapon should have the option of Power, Condition, Support, and AoE style skills… shouldn’t be forced to use specific weapons to have a certain build type.
On the other hand, this created a major limitation on builds.
This is part of the reason why skills are tied to weapons:
- It reduces the complexity of the profession, making it easier to learn the nuances.
- It reduces the interdependency of skills & weapons, simplifying skill re-tuning, since it’s easier for ANet to predict more of the impact that occurs after skills are changed.
Perhaps it’s not the best system and perhaps it’s not implemented as well as possible, but this is the GW2 system: your weapon set determines your 5 main skills and you get to choose a handful of others for your other 5 slots. Hate it or love it, it won’t matter, because it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
I have to admit when I first read about this, I was against it. Like the posters above, I thought limiting the build variations was going to limit my game play. I haven’t found this to be the case. With fewer combinations to choose from, I’m better able to apply my own skill to the game.
Yeah… that’s why I think you should be able to choose… like, with me, I don’t double tap to evade… because I’ve used it on accident before and fell and died. So.. I think there should be a box that you can check or not check, to set your skills with the weapons… or use your own skills. A lot of the skills you can use with whatever weapon, like with the area skills that put a circle on the ground… you can use those with anything. But the ones where it’s like “Shoot up to 3 targets with your pistol” those are for specific ones. And yeah, but the other 5 slots you can only choose the certain ones that they give you… you can’t choose between All of them, like the ones that come with the weapons.
And I’d like to also have more Precision, but the tabs skills that come with that that you unlock when you put points in them… I don’t like those. I should be able to choose those also, and should be able to put points in and out of them. Honestly, If I could jump and swim in Guild Wars1.. I’d be playing that game.

And using your own skills what whatever weapon you choose gives each person a unique set of skills and different weapons. That way if you have 5 Mesmers in the room, all with staffs… they won’t All have the same skills, and you can do different damage.
