Jumping Damage (A.K.A Falling Damage)
I am ashamed to say I have died, at lvl 38 nonetheless, from jumping down from the upper tier of Heolbrack to the lower tier. It’s not even that far a fall!
I have however jumped from higher places and survived just fine. I think the way fall damage is calculated is a bit skewed depending where you are in the world. I think it should definitely stay in place though, just with realistic calculations to damage right across the world.
Three good reasons for falling damage:
1) Jump puzzles need concrete penalties for failure
2) Jumping off a cliff should not be a safe way to instantly escape from a battle you are certain to lose (as mobs will not follow down cliffs)
3) Further incentivises creative use of terrain in PvP.
Also, though it may count in #3, falling damage is critical to the design of the WvW battlegrounds.
no. falling damage stays. it is working as intended.
however i am sad that we cannot knock people over cliffs.
i suppose this is a bug. i better go over to the bug forum and report this.

I was under the impression that that was possible… hmmm…

You can with certain classes abilities (ranger and elementalist come to mind.
Also, don’t be stupid, just because 1 game does not have fall damage does not make it a universal need. It is there for a reason and working as intended. If you don’t want to die from falling, pick a trait that lowers fall damage.

yeah i thought about that too. perhaps the skill is not powerful enough?
i did recall having blown off some edge / cliff by some monsters i think.
i was collecting siege weapons pieces for the shatterer pre quest and was shooting ascalon ghosts on some high ground with a rifle as a warrior.
i tried knocking them over the edge with the 5th rifle skill but they would just stop at the edge, not toppling over.
The problem with the falling damage is that it isn’t consistent or at least doesn’t feel consistent. The Heolbrack example really nails it. The norn starting area for example are full of falls you will not survive. Since I was travelling from left to right I found myself dieing pretty often in the norn starting area from falling.
I am not sure if this a dynamic leveling issue, but I would suspect that. I can see why people want to keep falling damage, but it definitly needs a bit rebalancing, because my heroic character dies from falls where I as a person wouldn’t have got any injuries at all.

hmmm yeah now that you mentioned it, i think fall damage could be bugged.
i recall a time when my warrior was walking about in sparkfly fen (sunless undead dragon map) when i accidentally slipped near some edge.
that edge / cliff certainly did not look very tall to me as i survived higher falls but my warrior died from that fall anyway.
luckily someone was nearby and my warrior was revived though.
I’m sorry for being stupid.
I was under the impression that Falling Damage was not fun and unnecessarily restricting a player’s ability to enjoy the game.
I’m sorry but to me it equals to ZERO fun when I die from falling damage.
I would love to be enlightenment has to how Falling Damage has a whole help improve the ability for a player to enjoy playing this game.
As for jumping puzzle I have solved almost 99% of them without ever dying once, I’m sitting at 1100+ Achievement Points and I never once liked Falling Damage.
I’m just sad that peoples actually can find something has trivial has this to be fun or worst to even bring something to a game.
Unrealistic?
It’s a game we are playing, right?
It’s a game we are playing, right?
that is correct. but you are playing anet’s game.
anet decided to have falling damage in gw2.
yes, you have the right to suggest for falling damage to be remove.
there may be others who support your suggestion.
though i think most will just reject your suggestion.
and ultimately it is up to anet to decide if they want to consider your suggestion.
personally i think anet will not consider removing falling damage as well.
This argument of his got useless the second he mentioned the crappy BL and BL2 series and their migraine inducing crap art style. Might as well be the coyote using Acme products. Falling damage is great and fun to laugh at your guildies or yourself when you accidentally run off a cliff or watch people constantly fail at a jumping puzzle.
And I knock people off cliffs all the time in WvW so dont know what your issue there is.

aaah thanks for sharing!
perhaps the warrior’s rifle 5th skill is simply not powerful enough to knock things off cliff / edge.
or perhaps PvE monsters cannot be knocked over cliff / edge etc?
I want falling damage and I want it to appear in the combat log! Please
@kouhei: You say you want to be enlightened. Feel free to join any PvP or WvW map at any time to see how falling damage is a crucial and integral part of game balance.
PvE is a huge part of the game, yes. But you’re still playing a game titled Guild Wars, and at the end of the day, the driving force in game design will be interesting, fun, dynamic, and fair behavior in PvP.
Monsters no you cant knock off but players you can. A kitten move I like to do is wait at the jumping puzzle or both thats in WvW and knock guys off at the fall down through the waterfall where they go back into the water, warriors have stomp which helps. Or other parts in the one in eternal to knock guys off.

. . .
It’s pointless arguing about this anymore I feel.
I knew the moment someone said you could push someone to their death via environmental damage that every griefer would come swarming this post to defend what they believe to be fun, that is to annoy others players.
On a side note, they could remove Falling Damage from PVE and keep it for PVP.
Saying it’s “the driving force in game design will be interesting, fun, dynamic, and fair behavior in PVP” seems pointless to me.
Because if that’s the case why even make PVE content, might as well balance everything for PVP and just make a PVP game.
I’m pretty sure I read many time from ANET during development how important PVE was for them.
Anyway…. I forgot how forum had turned over the years and I’m getting to old for these kind of assault, reminds me of D3 forums although I don’t visit these anymore and won’t visit this one after this post either.
I don’t mind if peoples are against an idea, it’s far from being the problem with fanboys nowadays.
Gravity doesn’t work like that.
i like the falling damage, maybe tweak it a bit, but i would like to be able to knock baddies off cliffs in PvE and damage them…
HELL NO!! keep falling damage.
OPer u crazy??? prolly trolling anyways -_-
So… You want to be… A ninja?
Honestly, I like the idea of falling damage. I mean, if I am chased by a group of angry invaders in WvW and I get to choose to either make a really far jump and land on well… Land… Or take my chances and try and aim for the water (like any sane person would), I would of course choose the water!
We finally got a game where we are not all super-heroes (referrence: WoW). It’s nice to feel mortal again.
Falling damage is fine, even if you die from it, it costs nothing for repairs. If you make the mistake of falling down, death seems like the fair option.
Plus it defeats the jumping puzzles. Why am i going to be afraid of falling if i have nothing to worry about other than starting over?
