Jumping Puzzles and Mesmer portals
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-On3Ya0_4Y)
I agree with the people who want portals to stay.
I usually always do my jp the ‘natural’ way and i don’t feel upset that others skip, rather i’m glad they’re getting it done and kittening off early so i dont have to deal with the impossible minor lag that stops me from doing the tough jumps accurately.
Earlier you compared JP to people getting legendaries automatically and automatically becoming lvl 80. That’s a terrible argument because these people aren’t getting anything, realistically, that changes anything in their game, maybe a rare item or that new exotic nobody wants at best. Yeah you get an achievement, but its not like you see people boasting that theyve done the new jp.
Fact is nobody gives a monkey how you do it because it’s just a bit of fun for people who want something else to do. the more you restrict it, the less fun and more chore-like it becomes.
Example : doing it with my friend, he cant get past half way and im done. If im a mesmer ill eventually warp him up, otherwise im gonna have to sit there for another half an hour watching my mate fail over and over.
Result : nobody is having fun
Alternatively if your friend isn’t skilled enough to do that jump puzzle you can relocate to one that’s easier and more within reach (Compromise!).
..Why does it matter if you get something that changes the game for you? That’s pretty much the foundation of the argument for people who have no problem with Mesmer portals. People shouldn’t be bothered that others are playing the way they want, I want all dungeon items in the game freely given to me, level 80, and legendary items. It’s my game and according to the kind of logic that makes Mes Portals in JPs acceptable it’s acceptable for me to get all of this stuff free as long as I want it.
The only questionable one is Legendary items as they affect the economy, my other points do not and therefore have no bearing on anyone else in the game, so why shouldn’t they occur?

If you’re allowed to find using a Mesmer portal to reach the end of a JP fun then I should be allowed to find a button to reach the end of dungeons fun. Don’t discriminate against my choice of a play-style.

but your discriminating against other peoples way of lifestyle. Mesmer portals have always something in the game and thus it is completely within reason that you can use the skill for its intended purpose, which includes skipping jp
a button that does everything for you isnt in the game because its moronic and obviously not going to happen. you’re comparing apples and luxury boats.
the mesmer still has to do the jp himself, he doesnt get it for free. The player earned the skill, played the mesmer, now they can reap the benefits. Thus the mesmer is a little more diverse.
there’s more than one way to skin a cat, why should your way be correct and our way be not?

Frankly, I would also welcome an easier way to get legendaries. I think the grind is inexcusable and not any fun, and I would much rather see them tied to actually achieving things in the game.

Therefore I may take some time replying to you.

Positing that because it’s always been in the game makes it acceptable is absurd, developers make mistakes too, like anyone would in their position. There have been hundreds of changes made to the game over it’s lifespan, as there should be. Developers aim to fix problems with the overall health of the game. A “feature” that allows skipping content is a problem.
If we were talking about removing people’s ability to participate in content it’d be one thing, but we’re not. In this instance what’s up for discussion is removing the ability to skip content. If you want to have fun trying a jump puzzle you won’t succeed in, be my guest, I won’t hamper your ability to do this or criticize you for your efforts. However, just because an individual isn’t willing to/cannot succeed in content in the game doesn’t mean we should marginalize completion of that content.
I was being sardonic with my comparison, but that doesn’t make it any less true. Allowing skipping content and receiving equal reward is not a good system to employ.
You seem to have a negative opinion of the systems I suggested, These systems are identical in practice to portals in JPs. You seem to dislike the thought of features that allow you to skip content within the game, you’re just more accustomed to what portals bring to the table.
I appreciate how Developers potentially landed on Mesmer portals being where they are and in their shoes I probably would have made the exact same mistakes. It’s difficult to foresee every path that the community could take in use of abilities, but even though it’s understandable it’s still a mistake that needs correction.
Ultimately I feel my way is correct, as you feel yours is, because I believe it’s unhealthy for the game to promote skipping content. Mesmer portals, while an awesome and unique skill of the profession, should be altered, limited, or removed in jump puzzles. I don’t think the game needs to remove flavor that makes Professions unique, but I believe portals can be fixed without doing so.

I’ll do a few examples since people are still fixated that the reward dictates whether something is “right” or “wrong”. It doesn’t.
Lets say a new jumping puzzle is released. At the end is an item that let’s your character dye weapons. The item is soulbound and the chest is character-based. The new jumping puzzle contains features from all of the current jumping puzzles but takes a skilled player 30 minutes to complete. It then turns out that players can be ported from the beginning directly to the chest. Is this right?
How about the same scenario but the reward is a one-time available and sellable precursor. Is this right? What if the precursor was for a new legendary created just for that jumping puzzle? Would it still be right?
Another scenario where the reward is a million dollars. You can get this by scaling a mountain and completing the obstacle course in top or by pressing a button which humanely euthanizes 101 cute, cuddly, fluffy, white kittens that are strays. Is it right to press the button to bypass the challenge and go straight to the reward?
Same scenario except the reward is just a stick of gum. Is this right?
As mentioned, my point is that the reward you get is irrelevant. It’s the METHOD that you use to get it which matters. In each situation I kept the method the same but changed what the reward was since people are still fixating on this in determining what is “right” or “wrong”. What’s right or wrong in the game is ultimately up to Anet, not the players or what loot received.
Only Nerf I can see happening to portals that wouldn’t cause to much rage is forcing it to only work on:
-Your Self & your party membersWhich would be fine and acceptable, would force people to join the mesmers party to use his or her service but ’ey, would prevent others from QQ because they hit “F” while running around.
would suck for wvw; where portal bombing/golem rushing makes encounters interesting
80 warr [Blaze Steelsoul], 80 ele [Blaze Nightstrike], 80 mesmer [Grim Shatterwhirl]
80 guard [Dusk Grimlight], 80 engi [Flintgear]

No but that’s cheating! If you can’t get to where you’re going legit, then you don’t deserve to be there. It’s unfair that you can get around large groups of enemies /walls/defenses because some mesmer put a portal down.
Think of all the effort people put into mounting a defense, and you just skip all of it with a portal.
/sarcasm
Please never make a scenario or w/e since it will only benifit your side of looking at things, and will make us think that you cant think furthere than that.
Thoese who love JP and dont have a laggy computer, will for the most part say it shouldnt be possible, because its something “they are good at”. But in reality its actually the lagg that changes it.
Thoese who like JP and have a good computer will for the most party really dont care, or say it should be there just in case. obvious reasons.
Thoese who like JP but cant do them all, because of a bad-ish computer, will for the most part want a mesmer, after they have tried to many times, we will find it usefull to have a mesmer to be able to join anything.
That is the way to look at everything on!^
Not by BS with scenarios or anything that is only helping your way of looking at things, since there are some people who havent learn dont trust BS yet from school.
With the release of the newest jumping puzzle, this issue has become more apparent. People are using jumping puzzles to trivialize the content. For instance, with the new jumping puzzle a Mesmer can create a portal at the chest, wp, and then run within range to port everyone to the very end.
Can we get a debuff while inside that prevents portaling or at least reduces its range? How about having no wp’s close to a jumping puzzle? How about making it so that the portal skill cancels and is forced into cooldown when you wp?
Completely agreed.
I think everyone is missing the fact that the mesmer portals is supposed to be able to do all the things you dont like, its a part of the game.
You say that just because it’s already in the game, doesn’t make it alright.
I say this is a GAME, and jp is not the priority of the game, it is optional content that you can do or not do.
all you want to do is limit perfectly functioning aspects of the game, your imposing your hangups on other people like your the king of opinion and what you say is obviously right because you get annoyed when somebody skips something you chose to do in half an hour.
portals are good in wvw because it adds a guild wars 2 like uniqueness into the wvw. Mesmers have portals so why the kitten shouldnt they be able to use it to get some sneaky people into a castle, the fact is good servers clean out a castle/keep before they leave it.
You are thinking to much like this game should be real life, you want sow things to stay slow despite the fact this is a game of wonder and magic where anything can go.
open your mind and stop thinking about what you want and realise its a friggin game people want to enjoy, not have limited because you cant stop thinking about how you cant boast about doing a jp and realise other people have a right to have fun.
your argument essentially boils down to “its not fair, why do they get to skip it when i have to do it!”
Wrong thread Queenie?
No, I was responding to some of the folks that said that mesmer portals were equal to giving legendaries for free. And I disagree with that. But much like jumping puzzles, making legendaries more accessible would probably be better for the game.

Not that I really care either way, but why do some people seem to think that getting a portal to the end chest is “experiencing the content”, and that if this option is removed, they’ll be missing out on something more than a fungible reward and an achievement?
