I haven’t seen it in game, but nothing hints that there is one. Can you make a katana skin for swords

Katanas are two-handed swords.

Katanas are absolute crap when used as one-handed sword. The blade is too thin and there’s not enough weight behind it to do any real damage.

They’re a two-handed sword designed to be -used- like a onehanded sword- they were for picking apart someone through the weak spots in their armor, or for hacking apart undefended people. But you needed both hands on the blade to give them any kind of power because they were so light.

Using them like a normal two-handed sword like we see ingame would just destroy your Katana. They were fairly brittle and hacking away at armor would see your sword destroyed in short order.

In short: No. Unless they get their own animations and weapon style.

and lore-wise.. we will probably get them once we’ve pushed the elder dragons far enough where we can travel the ocean to Cantha

I don’t see why not. I don’t know about you guys, but I rarely like any of the greatsword skins in the game, so adding new ones, either in the Black Lion Market or as a reward for events, should be nice, would make our characters even uniquer.

Katana wold make for a fast use weapon with many fast combo attacks but not as strong as a regular sword imo.

Also this would go more along the lines of a Cantha type expansion.

Wait for the Canthan expansion.

You guys are thinking you can use a Katana just like a greatsword. You cannot. They are not designed that way, and they -will- break if used in the same manner as a greatsword.

It would need an entirely new set of animations.

There’s a simpler solution.

They should add 5 ‘weaponless’ skills that change depending on profession.
Only the first one (punch) would deal damage, based on your power and level, while the rest would deal no damage, having only crowd control conditions and effects such as crippling, immobilized, blind, knockdowns, pushes, pulls, blocks, stuns and daze. Whenever you equip a weapon in one hand, but not the other, the rest of the skills are the weaponless.

Weaponless skills, unlike other weapon skills, would be unlocked with skill points. (1 the first 3, 3 the other 2)

This would make viable 1-weapon builds, and the ‘no-offhand’ thief skills an actual option.

We use greatswords as a slashing weapon instead of a stabbing, I think a one handed katana won’t break too many people’s immersion. Come to think about it, we use every weapon in the game incorrectly. Except staves, torches, focus, warhorns, and scepters because those aren’t real weapons.

I’m not sure what you’ve been watching but the only type of “katana” that can be used in one hand is a defensive weapon just less than the size of a short sword. They don’t call it a katana however, it’s called a kodachi.

Cantha was the more asian styled themed. However I would not like to see a katana in game at all especially not as a completely separate weapon type. I enjoy my fantasy games with straight swords or fantasy oriented curved weapons (like the charr and sylvari swords) If anything it would simply be a reskin of a one handed sword or greatsword. Which would look silly.

Don’t think it would work, katanas are predominantly two hands weapons. They can be used one handed, usually with a wakizashi, but it’s very uncommon and more defensive than offensive. Katanas do not hack, they utilise the curve of the blade to increase the cutting edge by drawing through a cut and increasing the ffective sharpness of the blade, which is fast coolled on the edge and fairly brittle so cannot hack and unlike in the movies is never used to block. It would require totally different animations to other swords in game not to look totallykitten when used.

Right, but even he himself admitted that it was mostly for show, and wasn’t very effective 1v1.

Wait for when the Cantha expansion is released, though I’ve got five bucks that says a one-handed katana would be called a “Shiro blade”, possibly. not really.

Though, this makes me wonder, if Shiro was translated into a GW2 profession, would he still be a thief or now be a warrior?

To all those that claim katana are two-handed, may I remind you that in gw there was a katana wielded by by hand. And for the love of god this is a game, so don’t tell me it would be inefficient because of it’s shape and size, no one is making you use it. I just said it wouldn’t be bad to have that skin for both types of sword.
