In Guild Wars 1 there were 20 levels, yet when you hit max level you didn’t feel like you had maxed your character out. There were plenty of skills and Elite Skills to pick up all over the world of GW1.
- Guild Wars 2 presented 80 levels but a limited amount of skills to play with.
I would suggest: More Skills.
- Mainly because I don’t feel like my character is levelling up. I get all my weapon skills before level 20, and at level 30 you receive the Elite Skill slot, and then you use a somewhat high number of skill points to receive the different Elite Skills.
One thing I especially miss from GW1 is that Elite Skills were not obtained in a panel and bought for skill points. I had to find out where the “Boss” mob with the particular Elite Skill that I wanted was. I had to get out into the world, I had to integrate myself into it.
- I really liked that. Though I had reached max level, I still felt like I levelled up, got stronger and better at fighting the hazards the world had to offer.
In Guild Wars 2 I don’t get that feeling. The lack of skills makes you reach max level (or getting the feeling that you’ve maxed out) before you hit level 80. It’s the same skills you use in the lower level zones as in the High End zones.
- I fight bunnies with the same skills as I fight dragons, so to speak.
Cranking up the price on all the current Utility Skills wouldn’t help either. They’re not all that fun, and it would feel more like a daunting grind to get them. More skills is what I would suggest.
Gameplay Arguments
- I discussed with another player about why there should be more skills, which he felt there shouldn’t. He said that GW1 was unbalanced, and that a mesmer could easily wipe a warrior, which I felt was untrue due to different builds that could counter the mesmers abilities (called Counter-Play, by the way)
Anyhow, the point was that in a one on one fight, the mesmer would maybe have had the upper hand, it would be unbalanced. But look at all the most popular PvP games out there such as Dota, League of Legends, etc.
- Their characters’ are unbalanced against certain other characters in one on one combat, but luckily there are more than just one member on each team. It’s all about Teamwork and playing together with the others, supporting and fighting for victory.
In Conclusion
- There are plenty of skills that ANet can implement from the first game, and I think that GW2 could use some more of them. It would also add more to the feeling of progression with your character, making it feel like levelling up, instead of the level just being a number you need to unlock dungeons and end-game content.
Mike O’Brien said that GW2 takes all that we love about GW1 and puts it into a better world (something along the lines of that) but this one thing that I love about Guild Wars 1 hasn’t been introduced: The ability to swap between skills so that I can suit them to my playstyle.
Hope you guys agree, if you have arguments against it, make sure that you read the part about Gameplay Arguments first (They were used to accommodate the PvP’ers The PvE’ers should have little to no objection against more skills… I hope, or I might get flamed…).
- Anyhow, your feedback is welcome, since I’m sure we all want to see this game improve on its concepts.
I’ll see you guys in game.
