Look, I liked the idea of being able to be in multiple guilds at first. I thought it was a great gesture at being able to focus on one thing as a guild and be in another that focuses on something else.
WvWvW guilds, PVE guilds, Tournament team guilds, Real Life friend guild….great setup for any gamer.
The problem I am having and the suggestion I want to make are as follows.
The problem – I am trying to run a tournament team guild that focuses on SPvP/pug tournament groups and CORE tournament groups. I spent the last week recruiting all range of players from good to bad. I tried to not be elitist and have open doors to anyone on the server. I TRIED TO BUILD A COMMUNITY OF SPVP PLAYERS.
This sounded great to every single person I spoke with. Had well over 75 players recruited in 3 days. (I recruit very well). However, I log on today and notice that 25 players are online, 15 of those players are not representing the guild. I ask them to represent us when they pvp (as this was the only guild requirement). 10 of them respond with (I am pvping in another pvp guild at the moment). I have players who are in multiple pvp guilds just to hop around and pug tournaments. During this timeframe I noticed 2 players left the guild. When I asked why, their response was “Not enough players active in guild”. LITERALLY 25 players are pvping, running tournament groups, pugging, or just running around heart of the mists testing their builds but because of the representing issue, it looks like guilds are inactive.
This is KILLING GUILDS. The only guilds that are not having an issue with this are guilds that do not care about losing members. mass recruit guilds. There is nothing in place to build guilds with loyal members who work for something. This game makes new guilds forming a nightmare for the guild leader. Organizing large functions is a joke because people get mad at you when you ask them to represent the guild.
I just kicked 75% of my members out and became a tournament team only guild. we have 4 tournament teams that have their own set times. My dream of having a community SPvP guild are shattered.
The solution – REMOVE THE ABILITY TO BE IN MORE THAN 1 GUILD. Please : )

No. Removing a good function, because people don’t like your guild...
How about, recruit for what you want to recruit for, and make sure you and the guildies have the same interests. Problem solved.

the Function is BAD! it should be removed or limited to only Two guilds with preset designation. PvP or PvE
influence gained should be shared by all the guilds the player belongs.
and Represent Button should only have effect on the Tag/Armor displayed!
it is very difficult to run guilds when players dont bother to press the represent button, dont care about it, and can also sit in one guild and spam the members of the other! (this happened to me, by a member of another guild, and i also got recruit offers from another member who was also member in two other guilds together with me…)
Multiple guilds and represent buttons are the mothers of all illness regarding guild management in GW2!

No, bad recruiting practices are the problem.

did you even read what he said Nels? He recruited just fine its the fact that they can join other guilds which kinda kills the whole point of a guild, because if you were to join a street gang would you be able to join another? not with out getting your kitten killed first.

Meh, I just required all my members to represent from day 1. They are not representing I quietly whisper them, they still refuse I kick them. I have recently kicked inactive members (this woulda been a lot easier with a last online feature lol) I now have 48 members the represent 100% of the time they play and are all on the same server. You just have to work it right and you can build a really solid crew of people.

Agree with Narathkor. Our guild has a strict no multi-guilding policy. Our members knew this when they joined and if they fail to represent whenever they are online they recieve a warning and then a boot.
It’s a lame feature imo, but one easily worked around. Setting up your tPvP guild sounds like the smartest thing you could have done.
The biggest issue I have guilds is the inability to see when the last time was that someone logged in combined with offline members being shown by account name, not character name. We have members that people can’t remember seeing online but we don’t want to kick because we can’t confirm it without knowing who they are.

well if your guilds have strict No Multi Guilding policies… this means something. exactly that exact something the op is complaining about. and why would some one who has the option to be in two or three guilds. one with his brother and one with his friend care if you might kick him for that? i am not against multiple guilding. but i do disagree with the funcionability of the represent button. whats wrong if some one can be representing two or three guilds at the same time, see both of the guilds chats. be informed about their events, etc, etc.
if this feature was added. it wasnt added so you or any body else will add “Strict No Multi Guilding Policy”. by declaring that you admit there is a problem.
the solution is either Yes or No. if it is Yes it should be Yes all the way. and if it is a no, as hinted by you, than it should just be removed.

Look, the real problem as I see it is that ANet had this idea that Guilds should be like real life clubs. You join as many as you like and can comfortably commit to, just like in real life. Examples they used were belonging to a sporting team and stamp collector’s club (or something along those lines), meaning you could belong to both a PvP guild and a PvE guild and not be forced to choice between those.
In theory it sounds great. Who doesn’t want to join an elite WvW guild and at the same time join your best buddies silly happy casual fun time guild? But in reality guilds are more like sports teams than hobbiest groups. You can’t belong to multiple sports teams and expect to be able to commit to training, attending games and social events for both groups.
As a serious WvW guild our members are expected to WvW every night that they are on. We don’t say “You must be on every night between 6pm and midnight”, but we do expect that if you are online during our prime time that you are in WvW, representing our guild and fighting for our server.
Now if you’re a working adult (like I’m sure many of us are) you can probably only play in the evenings/weekends/when you’re not working. So if you belong to multiple guilds you are going to need to spread your already limited time between these guilds.
In the OPs case he wanted to run sPvP and tPvP groups. To be successful in tPvP you’re going to need to spend time training and practicing, researching new builds, watching videos of how other players play and just generally putting the time in. But if you’re off with another guild how can you do that? If you can only play for 4-6 hours each night and you need to practice sPvP, participate in tPvP and want to spend time with your buddies wouldn’t it be a smarter idea to have your buddies join your sPvP guild?
Saying “Why would I join your guild when you won’t let me join any others” just says to me that we don’t want you in our guild anyway. You wouldn’t commit the time and effort that we expect of our members in our chosen focus. This is no different from how any organized group behaves be in a pvp or raiding guild from another MMO or your local football club.

Zane, you hit it 100%.
I am not against multiple guilds but we need a system in place that will allow for guilds to continue to grow while not representing. I don’t mean grow as in influence. I mean GROW as a community.
My primary issue was multiple PVP guilds just to guild hop when one guild has more active players on. the problem with that is that when these people are in the other guild, mine begins to look inactive, thus losing players. It’s an issue NO guild leader wants to have to deal with when they log in.
Nels, in no way, shape, or form do I have bad recruitment skills. I recruited every single player with the requirement of repping my guild ONLY while they pvp. I have no issues with other guilds/pve/wvw/friends guilds. My issue is with the large amount of players who just don’t understand that building a guild takes the effort of the GUILD. These players are destroying ALL guilds. When paid tournaments come out, most pvp guilds will break apart because they are forming around pugging tournaments instead of forming GUILD TEAMS.
