It is my belief that Goldsellers and Botters should have their mac address banned. For those that don’t know what the Mac address is, it’s a digital code representing your computer hardware configuration. Much like an IP address, a Mac address is unique to your computer.

Now I realize there is probably a good amount of revenue in just banning accounts. The goldsellers and botters have to buy a new account and start over. But its starting to become ridiculous and we need a better way of dealing with this issue. Give them a reason to think before spamming /map.

I know this isn’t the complete answer to the issue and there are ways to reverse it. But its much more time consuming than making a call to your ISP to have your IP changed.

Do you understand how layer 2 works?

Routers change the L2 header meaning they overwrite the source mac address.

By the time your packets get to GW2 servers they have a different source mac address (many times over actually).

Also its not difficult to spoof your local mac address if the GW2 client checked for it.

I think the best answer to that is, Mac address bans are used in many different instances and they work. Regardless of how the router changes L2 headers there are still many people banned with this method. If a game like Second Life can do it why not Guild Wars
