With the amount of time and energy (and money) given to make even a +10 agony infusion, why wouldn’t ANet think of a better way to utilize these upgrades? The kicker is when you actually use the upgrade on a piece of equipment, you’re basically either forced to buy a splitter on the TP to get it back eventually to upgrade again or start from scratch with agony infusions.

Here are some suggestions.
1) Like essences of luck, you could use the fractals crafting materials as a consumable. Just make them drop more often, purchasable with relics and make ascended jewelry and pristine relics salvageable, with a high chance for fractal mats.
( Something like the bar progression for MF: Vial- 10 points, Glob- 50 points., Shard- 100 points)
2) Just have it that we can continually add agony infusions to a certain piece of equipment. Using the same formula as introduced in Fractured, without the use of reagents. So it will still take 524 288 +1 Agony infusions to get +30 AR on a certain piece of equipment.

The points of the new system are:

  1. Collect infusions OR insert smaller ones
    You’re to decide to insert a small + 3 AR infusion into your gear to resist the bosses’ attacks or collect 512 + 1 AR infusions to get a powerful + 10 AR one.
  2. Spend money to combine AR infusions. → Gold sink
    > 1s each fusion, makes > 511s ~ > 5g gold sink for a + 10 AR infusion.
  3. More inventory slots needed for collecting + x AR infusions → more cashshop

It would indeed be nice to further upgrade the AR of a piece of equipment without having to completely redo the progress up to that point.
