Make dyes for all characters on account
Obsidian Spire OS / EXS
I agree. Good post.
I think they want to keep dyes open as a way to get people to buy gems. If everyone unlocks every dye on their account then they no longer get any money from people buying dyes, while if they have to unlock the dyes they want for every character they want them on then alts will help selling more dyes
Its a money sink, its not meant to be practical.
Either that or increase drop rates of White, Celestial, and Abyss. My Guild theme was supposed to be Angels. Yet, not once has White or Celestial dropped for me. Even crafted several rare grey’s for it even.
This game should have had a disclaimer on the price tag. $60 for the game. $120 is you want a your characters in White or Black.

Why doesn’t this site have a “thumbs down” feature?
Why not just screw the crappy Celestial and Abyss and use any other light gray (or some blues) for white and any dark gray (or any other colour if it’s dark enough) for black? Saves you a hell of a lot of time and money, and in my opinion (and a lot others opinion) looks a lot better
I remember seeing a dev post before release stating dyes would be account bound upon release of the game.
At least rare dyes should. There’s only maybe 5 rare dyes that I and many people I know really aim for. Most of the shades I like are in uncommon.
Could not agree more. I truly hope this happens.
It was intended to be Account Bound.
Kristen PerryColors will be unlocked, not muled.
Storage was always a factor when it came to dye colors in Guild Wars. The new system would cripple most inventories if we required characters to lug all the dyes around. Fear not! The dye hues themselves will be unlockable through various means, both in-game and out. Once you unlock the color, it will be available across your entire account, not just the individual character.

I agree.
Oh, and Ravion, your link didn’t work.
I endorse this, but it’ll never happen.
This is another of those suggestions that gets re-posted frequently yet gets ignored.
Unlike some of the others (mounts, dueling and raids), this one would actually improve the game for all players.
But as long as ArenaNet see it as a source of money, they’ll keep it per-character.
The thing is, even thought they’ll wheel out the suspicious “metrics” argument, I doubt very much that people spend that much, if anything on dyes from the gemstore. I would guess that the majority of dyes are unlocked from unidentified dye drops, then from the trading post and finally from the gemstore (a LONG way behind the TP).
It’s a small bump on the monetisation mountain, but the mountain’s there because there are LOTS of these little things pushing people towards spending real-world cash on the game.
That’s why I’ve promised not to give ArenaNet another cent until they start behaving in a less greedy fashion.
See, the irony is, if they allowed dyes to be unlocked across the account, I’d be more inclined to buy them from the gemstore, especially if I could buy exactly the dye I want and not just a random chance at one. I’m sure most other players would feel the same way if this option was presented to them.
It’s a case of ArenaNet cutting off their nose to spite their face.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
I agree.

Might be because I place that link in all the “Make dye Account Wide” threads.
They promised Account Wide dyes then broke their promise. I’ll see if there is another article and link that one.

Google “Kristen Perry Colors will be unlocked, not muled.” and you will find quite a few forums and articles referencing the same link (that is now dead) and some even quoted the whole blog article.

So your complaining because you choose to spend real world money on dye’s ? You realize that in game gold can be farmed, hell I did 30 gold in two days with little effort, there is your abyss, I did 12 gold in a day there is your celestial.
Then again this is coming form the person that feels they need to have a grace period on dailies cause he missed it by one salvage and can’t fathom starting the new daily when it starts????
The Game is $60 you decided to spend $120 by your own choice, arena Net didn’t force you to in order to enjoy the game.
On some level, I agree that it would be nice to have all dyes account-bound and not have to worry about it for alts. However, not everything that seems “nice” in the short term is better for the game in the long-term. Maybe I’d like all my gear to be account-bound, too. Maybe I’d like Guild Missions to be solo-able. Maybe waypoints and harvesting tools should be free.
As has been mentioned, it’s partly because dyes act as a gold sink, and partly because they are also a Gem Store item. It may not be that big a factor on its own, but if ANet gives ground here, then it ceases to provide that function and we’re off to the next feature we can complain about. But, these aren’t game improvements — these are just things you want but don’t want to pay for.
Besides, if dyes were account-bound instead of character-bound, we would be talking about a different system. They would probably drop way less frequently, and every dye would be several times more expensive — even the more common ones. A lot more people wouldn’t even bother with it, and stick to only the default colors as much as possible.
Celestial, White, Black, Abyss, etc., are the most expensive not only because they are rare, but because they are the most demanded. People are willing to pay for them, though, and that’s why the prices are so high. If you got your wish, and dyes were account-bound, do you seriously think the price would remain the same and you’d be sitting there in Celestial dye on all your characters? No, Celestial dye would be at least 10 times more expensive in the TP and hardly anyone would have it.
I remember when Black dye would run almost 100 plat at first in Guild wars, I think that eventually got moved to X plat and X ectos along with something else.
So in turn Black in guild wars is what Abyss is in Guild wars 2 along with celestial. If you make them account bound I promise that abyss will be the price of a precursor if not more.
Well someone in my guild spent over 60g on abyss dyes for his characters so I don’t someone in that circumstance would agree with a change like that without some sort of compensation.

I dnt think I care about account dyes. I just love looting that unknown dye, all excitedly I open it to either greater excitement or disappointed. If it is an exciting dye then my choices are: which of my characters is going to get this pretty dye (cause face it not every armour looks nice with every dye) or am I gonna sell it cause its a bit of gold worth. Now if its a disappointing dye – is it some silver worth? or just going to throw it on some character that doesnt have it yet.
This post is probably very useless, but I dont see how account bound dyes will improve gameplay experience. I think I will get bored if I just went and bought every dye I like and then all my chars have it rather than to contemplate on my desicion for each my of characters paint style :P
I agree.

Initially dyes were supposed to be account based, but later (before the game release) ANet stated they were gonna be character-based. Although I would very much appreciate account based dyes, we cant say we were not informed about the changes on the dye system.
Sadly, we have pretty much already figured out why they went with character based.

Even with the excuse:
“Customized dye should be something that denotes your characters progress, like better looking, more elaborate gear. As you spend more time on your character, they grow and gain access to more customization options. If we make dyes account based, this progression will only happen on one character. We wanted character customization to remain tied to the character but we felt that one-time-use dyes discouraged players from customizing as often as they would like, that is how we arrived at the current system.”

People will just buy the colors they want, IE. ANet somehow makes $$$.
Though I’d like to see the numbers on how many dye packs they sell off the Gem Store nowadays.

I’ll repeat it again:
Make the dyes account wide!!!
You want the dyes to be made more rare to compensate? If they where account bound, they’d become worthless garbage in no time.
So whats wrong with a Business that wants to make money? While I agree that we should have the option to purchase specific dye colors, Anet and NCSoft decided to keep it RNG, they run the show. And besides, its not like you cant play w/o the proper Dye colors. Remember people CUSTOMIZATION OPTIONS, if Anet started selling stuff that would affect Gameplay (ie Uber foods, Stat Buffs, Weapon and Armor Skins that add stats) then thats the time I will boycott the Gem Store. I actually get better Dye Drops after the last Feb Patch (I think that was the patch). If I manage to get lucky and get an abyss dye, ill sell it no questions asked.
