Make gap closers move you forward.
I dont do pvp mainly due to the framedrop but i noticed this too while questing / doing events etc. Tried to get some distance to the enemy by turning around clicking my target off to be sure i dont charge to him, but whaddyaknow it went straight for the mob kinda annoying

you can do this by double clicking the ground in front of you, before firing off the skill, to make sure you don’t have an enemy selected. May have to check double click to select in the options, not sure what happens if that isn’t selected.
I have a guardian that does this. He even does it sometimes when Ive deselected the mob. Ive found that if you dodge roll forward then immediately press your gap closer then you will leap away from the mob.

I know I can double click the ground to deselect my target, but in the heat of battle, when I’m first attacking someone with a ranged weapon and then switch to sword to use Savage Leap, I sometimes forget to do that. If I’m rushing through the middle of an enemy zerg trying to get inside a keep, it’s difficult to reliably find an empty spot on the ground to click, with all the characters and particles around me. Especially in that last case, a leap in the wrong direction will always get me killed. I can’t really think of any situation where I would want to leap backwards towards my target, so I think my solution is the best way to handle this.
