First of all i would like to say, that the current map is well designed.
Still I have found some issues during my travels.
First: Map-zooming. When I was but a journeyman i used to open my map 5-6 times before I could find my way around in a city, and the zooming effect of the map caused a slight headache at first, and dizzynes later. An option to turn this zooming off would be a real pain-killer for me and probably others aswell.
Second: Boundaries. The artistic smudges that cover the edge of the map and the undiscovered parts are neat, but it’s hard to tell where the map/area ends, until you have ran to every corner of it. Adding a thin line around the explorable are (after you have entered it) would make exploring less frustrating.
Third: Visibility. By this I mean two things: 1.) being able to reduce opacity of the big map and 2.) Revealing every Heart-event in the discovered portion of the maps, hunting for the very last one to get 100% is yet again, not fun, but frustrating.
That’s all of my suggestions for now, sadly I can’t code, and therefore don’t know whether my suggestions can be implemented or not, so I will keep my extreme ideas ’till later ;D
