FFXI used to do these, with a rented private cathedral zone and a GM roleplaying the minister. My roommate and I married our characters so he could switch his Mithra Thief’s citizenship from Windurst to Bastok for cheap. Turns out, the GM wasn’t actually authorized to do that, or anything else beyond officiate over the fake ceremony and hand out some consumable party favors. Not even “in the name of TRUE LOVE”, which we tried out best (a little too late) to fake.

Also that week Bastok took a nosedive in the city vs. city rankings for the first time in over a year on Siren server, so the cost to immigrate plummeted, but we’d already spent a small fortune renting the cathedral and crafting the Rings and my friend’s Wedding Dress/Boots/Gloves/Corsage combo. It was still a fraction of what the immigration cost would have been if Bastok was still #1 on that server though, and the screenshots were hilarious.

THEN his parents found out that he’d had his sexy cat-lady character fake-marry my big bearded wizard (a BLACK MAGE no less, clearly a minion of Evil), and they completely flipped out and made him move out of the dorms lest we further convert their son to what I can only assume they imagined was a satanic pansexual LARPer cult.

So… uh… yeah! I’m totally in favor of GW2 Marriages!

You can do a white dress and a pretty nice suit with the current armor and town clothes, and dyes. It also really depends on the theme of your roleplayed wedding, as I’m pretty sure medieval, generic (tolkein-esque) fantasy, and steampunk don’t really have the same requirements as modern real-world weddings. For that matter, modern real world weddings don’t really follow many rules, other than there’s at least more than one person alive in the room.

They were nice enough folks, in retrospect. He was only 17, and it has become my opinion (now that I’m a parent myself) that they maybe were a little hasty letting a kid that age go to a school in Hawaii while they were still in Illinois. The fact that their son’s grades plummeted as soon as he moved in with me and my gamer buddies probably had more to do with their reaction than our fake Man-on-Catgirl RP marriage, but that doesn’t make for as funny of a story.

Also, he did kind of a crappy job explaining the situation – “No, we didn’t spend any REAL money, just FAKE money in the game, that… well.. what? Oh, yeah! See, my character’s a girl, but she’s a lesbian! She’s just marrying Scott’s character for her green car… no… Mom… come on, stop crying Mom…”

Weddings tend to cause more problems than benefits.

If you add weddings, you get to the whole big issue of genders. And that’s really something that you want to avoid at all costs. Because let’s face it, whichever side you pick, you’re going to lose something.

Adding in-game weddings also tends to bring in unnecessary drama. And it tends to lead to account sharing, which leads to false accusations of being “hacked” or “scammed”. And that is also another unnecessary workload for ANet.

I can roleplay a homosexual asura/norn wedding right now if I wanted. That will never be a real problem, because if someone really wants to do it, they’re going to. The question is, will we give them costumes like the wedding attire in Guild Wars 1, or will they simply have to dye their town clothes?

What is the problem with genders and weddings?

Well, if they choose to implement gay marriage, they will without a doubt get some unwanted publicity for that, all while losing some younger players because of their parents prohibiting them. I doubt ANet would want publicity for being the first major Western game to “support” gay marriage.

If they choose not to implement it, they end up with a guaranteed couple of times a month when someone will post into the Suggestion forum about implementing it. And they will, again, lose some of the players, this time those who wanted gay marriage.

So either way, it’s a lose-lose situation for them.

And if they implement marriage, that’s just one step away from in-game animations like hugging and kissing. And that’ll bring the same issues again. Not a path you want to take.

To what end, exactly? What justification do you have for the time and effort it would take to implement this? A fun little 10 minute diversion that a handful of people would enjoy and then not care about? I’d rather see a bunch of pathing bugs addressed and have the sever space used for just about anything else. Course maybe I’m just a sad person who’s never been in love.

There’s no such thing as “unwanted” publicity. Any publicity is good publicity, especially if anywhere in that publicity there’s any hint, indication or implication that one supports ideas that aren’t outdated and hatemongering.

For an added step in the right direction, don’t even call it marriage. That would avoid the whole problem for the… people who would have a problem with it.

Opportunity for more outfits and more things to do. Why the hell not. It could fit in on a character’s portrait right above/below titles: [Term to replace Married] or it could be another little mark of recognition similar to the little gold thingy for 100% world completion.

Make it open to every gender/race combination and then step back and let the community run with it. A handful of blow-hards that are too immature or hateful to handle it won’t ruin the game for anyone that’s actually busy playing the game. And as vespers said, banning/losing the hatemongers is a good thing.

Hugging and Kissing animations are unlikely for an entirely different reason, I think – syncing animations between two characters of variable sizes would be a freaking nightmare. I can’t imagine a price point that would justify the effort needed to create them, that players would actually pay.

We’ve had synced dances between multiple characters of different sizes. Hugging and kissing.... wouldn’t be too hard.

Really though people, I’m finding it hard to explain why you can’t just dye your armor and prance around for a day.

The reason direct interaction between two models is so much harder is because it’s not just synched. It also has to not clip, not be too far apart, can’t make the character models look ridiculous or bent weirdly out of shape, etc. There’s a lot more work going into two models participating in one interaction than just letting characters synchronize their actions. Synching a dance up just makes sure every character’s dance is timed together, it doesn’t make their models do anything special.

Anyway we don’t need animations for /hug or /kiss, but the emotes showing up in chat would be nice. This is kind of off the topic of the actual proposed suggestion though.

On why we can’t just dye our armor and prance around for a day instead: why don’t you do that instead of going through some silly union ritual with a loved one irl? Because it’s silly and doesn’t mean anything unless people want it to. Since acting silly won’t mean anything to people in-game it’s not going to replace the idea of a recognized marriage-like thing implemented in the game to be done.

When you say synced dances, do you mean physical contact between participants, like a waltz or some kind of folk dance with hand-holding and clapping or whatever? If so, I’d love to see some videos so I can start tracking down the animators to pester about how they did it. Or do you mean like when you get a row of characters together and all do “/dance *”, and then they start performing the dance emote in unison? If so, that’s totally different from making the character models appear to interact physically with each other, and worlds easier.

Wedding costumes were implemented in GW1, so I think it’s only a matter of time until they’re introduced into GW2. As to actual in-game mechanics supporting the marriage of two characters? I think that would never happen. Too much work for not enough reward, especially when you can easily RP a wedding ceremony in-game anyway.

So? Let them get mad. This is the 21st century and we should stop having to pander to a vocal minority who know nothing but hate, or who hide behind a warped sense of morality that states that murder in the name of God is fine, but the love between two members of the same sex is the work of Satan. GW2 and gaming in general would be better for it. Besides, there’s nothing in the Guild Wars lore that discriminates against such a union anyway.
