Make the ability to become a Commander require actual WvW involvement. I’m suggesting the requirements be a number of the tokens you get off of slain players, capturing and defending structures as well as a required amount of time in WvW actively participating to be elligable to become a Commander.

I don’t know, I’m just throwing out an idea that isn’t just “Be rich and suddenly have the ability to lead people in WvW!”

Agreed. what does 100g have to do with showing you’re capable of leading others in WvW?
A system based on WvW related achievements (keeps taken, tokens, kills in WvW etc) instantly suggests someone at least knows what they’re doing in WvW.

The gold can remain as maybe the Anet feels the gold sink is needed, but WvW achievements really should be incorporated.

A lot of people bring up the point that guilds like to get a Commander with a collaborative effort. And if you made the manual require an obscene amount of Badges of Honor, that wouldn’t happen.

And comparing pricing of stuff like Cultural Armor to WvW Exotics, you would be lead to believe that the amount of Badges of Honor would end up being like 1,500 or so.

And even then, what does that mean? Worst case scenario, it’s just someone who likes running with the zergs a lot. Best case scenario, you have someone who’s dedicated to WvW and has gotten his badges not by following the horde but leading it.

@Squirrelbane, I agree. For example, if someone wanted to, they could spend 40$ and buy 100g from a website or even buy gems and convert to gold. That takes a lot of skill and definitely proves that you have abilities in WvW. /sarcasm off

@Olba, So if I got a bunch of my guildies to lend me 1 gold each does that suddenly make me competent enough to lead in WvW? Or actually perform the commander role as intended rather than just a blue icon over my character? The answer is no. And I do not think that something designed to encourage World vs World organization should be based on gold alone.

Because also get this. Down the road, anybody who ever earns 100g who wants to get commander for kittens and grins can do so and step into WvW. Suddenly we have ~150 commanders per map in WvW running around trying to lead zergs and bark out orders. At least with an accumulated demonstrative earning system, you can ensure that the person wearing the commander icon and title knows a thing or two about WvW.

I’d like if the Commander could only be a guild leader with a guild that has taken enough keeps in a given time (let’s say a week). That would mean the guild leader is required to know how to lead before even being able to become a Commander.

I agree with this . Commander serves no purpose outside of WvW nor should it be shown outside of it . The only reason i can think its for gold is cause ANET wants to use it as a gold dump like T3 cultural armor .

And that’s great for the guild in question and its members. My guild did that and we have great leaders in WvW.
But if it’s someone you don’t know personally there’s just no way of telling if they bought gold or have spent hours leading ppl in WvW.

At least this idea would give a better general indication.

I get your idea, but there are some issues like – what about if it`s not a guild leader who is good commander, what if a person who has guild commanding skills isn`t in guild at all and so on.

Back to the topic, it could be also be like this – after meeting some requirements (getting badges, capturing keeps n stuff) you get a permission to have a qualification test of some sort (once every week for example), during which time you temporary become a commander and have to get certain requirement to get permanent commander title. But then again it comes with such issues like – what if you just rolled with other commander and he did all the job (how the game will decide what`s your contribution in the first place).

Also off topic – having a battle plans would be also neat xD, commanders put up arrows and stuff on a map showing where to go and how to behave and then sending it to everyone in the vicinity

I’m sorry, but you’re wrong. Commander DOES show a purpose outside of WvW. Squad chat allows a large group of people to chat with each other while still being in the map they want to be in, the party they want to be in, and repping the guild they want to rep. It’s like a limited form of alliance chat and it’s absolutely needed for that. I hope at some point A-Net will make give us actual Alliance chat and this will become obsolete, but until then changing the method of acquisition would be bad for people who use the book for social reasons.

I spent my 100 gold, bought my compendium, and it’s active at all times outside of WvW. If I’m going into WvW I turn it off, because I know I’m not a fit tactician/strategist/leader.
