Melee for Mesmers
Dual swords is exceedinly powerful on the mesmer.
2 makes you invulnerably for 2 seconds with a 10 second CD.
4 is a block.
thats 2 abilities that let you avoid all damage IN ADDITION to your dodges.
3 pops out an illusion and lets you swap places possibly avoiding an attack.
5 pops out a phantasm that does pretty good damage
Combined with your shatter skills you can get some nice damage or damage mitigation with it.
Not ever weapon/skill set is about dps. Some are more about damage mitigation/avoidance.
With pretty much every class in this game, the ranged skills do less damage than the melee. I can appreciate the usefulness of the blocks and evades for up close fights, but once you blow those, you’re still stuck in the same situation of “Oh, dang, I’m in melee range and my target is at full health…” I’d be willing to trade the damage mitigation for damage output, which is why my suggestion is to give us a new weapon type, not change the ones we have now.
this would be pretty cool. Make it a dagger xD

sword+pistol does decent dmg

I see you don’t play the mesmer very often. Either that, you are not very good.
A good mesmer goes toe to toe and can avoid getting hit for much longer than many other classes. Between blurred frenzy, distortion, block, weapon swaps and dodging, I can avoid damage like nobody’s business. Also, I have blink, decoy and veil on hand at all times, I ‘AM’ the epitome damage avoidance and superior damage all into one.
If I could only play her like that in PvP, people will cry about mesmers again…

I see you don’t read very often! Either that or you are not very good at it. You’re still missing the point… I’m not complaining that I can’t keep from getting hit. My issue is that the swords just don’t do enough damage. I can dodge about for days, but when it takes easily twice as long to kill something as other melee classes, I take issue. I’m asking for another melee weapon set that has a little less utility and more dps.
Theyr’e probably not adding anything more to the mesmer for now, but this would be a cool weapon for an expansion.
Grimalim i don’t share ur feel of lack of dmg for mesmer, with the right runes and sword + pistol, i think the mesmer can do some decent dps there, this while im all for more variaty, and sometimes it could be a tat higher but its no real problem for me if you do it right.
I’m talking out of what i see from pvp, i can do a decent amount of dmg with sword and pistol, maybe not as high as some warriors/thiefs/elementalists, but we have the skill to confuse to compensate.
I rarely swap to my staff on my mesmer, since I love dual swords so much – partly for the aesthetics and partly for the insane damage potential.
I really hate saying things like this to people, but you really do need to learn to play the mesmer a bit better if you think their melee damage is low. As others have said: the mitigation/avoidance with swords is increadible too; but that’s not the point.
- Illusionary Leap allows the mesmer to get into close range quickly, increasing dps somewhat over the course of the fight by reducing the time. Combine this with the cripple and then the immobilize from Swap – you’ve just closed the distance, kept the opponent from moving and gained a valuable illusion.
- Blurred Frenzy grants you distortion, but also has the frontal AoE from it is very high damage compared to a lot of professions’ skills. Please don’t underestimate this.
- The Mind Slash/Gash/Stab is also respectable dps and debuffing. Not the best, but still strong.
- Illusionary Riposte and Phantasmal Swordsman both summon illusions. That’s three illusions just from your weapon skills. If you can use your F skills and utilities, Mind Wrack and Cry of Frustration can deal devastating damage while you’re still slashing away with your sword.
A melee mesmer is strong, if used properly. If you want to hack and slash away with no additional class mechanics or synergy between weapon and utility skills – play an all-signet warrior and ignore the adrenaline bar. My mesmer can take out a regular enemy in a matter of seconds by stepping in, shattering clones and using Blurred Frenzy in quick sucession; while veterans might need another round of illusions from my utilities.
I’d say that melee mesmers don’t need any adjustments to them; but Blurred Frenzy says that it has eight seperate hits, but only actually hits four times and for some reason has five slashed in the animation. If mesmers could just count properly, meleeing would be perfectly fine.
Apparently everyone is taking my whining to mean I don’t know how to play my Mesmer…. Let’s get this straight people, I’m a straight up baller when it comes to Mesmering, I just apparently never learned how to use the one handed sword. (Typically I use Gsword and staff) Guess I’ll do some research on it, but it will never change the fact that I want some other option to melee besides the sword. Also, look up that Dimensional Anchor. It was amazing and I will pine for it until the day I stop playing GW2.
You could roll engi and have no melee but a wrench and a crobar, and then complain.

rock the elixirs.
mesmer’s don’t need buffs. Leave the high dps to the classes that our inteneded for that. Stick to the confusion and evasion, that’s what mesmers do best (not at all saying they can’t hit)
