"Missions" or other linear pve progress
Some system for leading you between dynamic events through zones. Being either dynamic events in their own right, or simply “quests” that would lead you to a nearby event that is about to start.
Therein lies the problem with your suggestion.
In order for your suggestion to work, you’d either need to:
- Have the event happen in a time-frame before it’s assigned event, which wouldn’t really solve anything aside from holding your hand, leading you to the event (which we have NPC’s that do this anyway)
- Have the event triggered by the player, which we already have events such as this anyway.
The Personal Storyline takes the place of Missions in this game. Unfortunately, because of the increase of levels and some parts of the Storyline taking part in higher level areas, recommended levels are needed to space it out. Where’d be the sense in having a level 30 already at the stage where they could fight Zhaitan?
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
I’d like to have something like gw1 missions but I think that’s not gonna happen. Instead I guess what I’m asking for is exactly your 1st point: something that just leads you to dynamic events. Nothing too complicated, but just something that I can “follow with my brain turned off” as bad as that sounds.
I do have to admit that the sound of filler quests sounds interesting. however i’d like to think that there’s a point to keeping the quests distanced in levels. for me it feels like while you’re on your way to do the next quest, you are solving the locals problems (even if the quest is “urgently head to this location before your ally gets eaten by all things unholy” and i’ve certainly felt rediculous when a character’s life is on the line and you’re going around picking up apples for some fellow’s apple pie). It helps to slightly alleviate the problem in my opinion.
Not what you’re asking for, thats for sure, and it’s become very evident with my alts that im currently leveling what you’re saying, but you do have to consider that Anet is a relatively small company, considering competitors like blizzard who must have thousands working for them while Anet has only a few hundred employees. Maybe it’ll happen, but we’ll have to see.
I think it would be great to take advantage of all the beautiful areas of Tyria by having short side missions/quest chains in different areas that also develop lore or side stories. I remember in GW doing a number of quest chains such as the one for centaurs in Nightfall that I found really interesting. These could be totally optional (in addition to hearts) for those who don’t like “quests.”
Here are some additional points I hope ANET takes into consideration. What motivated me to keep playing in GW? Could any of that be implemented in some form for GW2?
I was thinking about this question the other day. What kept me playing besides pvp or dungeons? I realized that there were so many things that couldn’t be achieved or acquired until later in the game:
- skills – there were certain skills that were really great to have but couldn’t be purchased until you reached certain areas of the game. In GW2 you get everything right from the start.
- 2nd Prof – again you couldn’t access a second profession until you reached the crystal desert (for Prophecies) and completed a number of quests in different areas. So another reason to travel to those areas aside from the mission storyline.
- Elite skills – some of these were just amazing skills but you couldn’t get them unless you could travel to the area the boss was located in and defeat him. Another goal to work towards.
- Heroes – Heroes came out with the Nightfall expansion and everyone wanted heroes. In order to get them if you were on a different campaign was to complete quests that would open up travel to Elona. Then you had more questing to do to acquire all the available heroes. One of them, Razah, was not available until you completed Nightfall.
*Achievements – I know there are achievements in GW2. Two that I really enjoyed were Guardian and Vanquisher. So basically going back and working in hard mode. I would love to see a hard mode for the personal story or some type of vanquisher title. That would get people playing in empty areas again.
