I’d love to be able to multi-class as there are only bits and pieces of each static class that I somewhat like.
Keep the static classes but offer some mechanic that allows people to modify their class later in the game. For instance, make completing a personal story worth it by allowing players to multi-class 60% main class, 40% 2nd class or something like that. Perhaps even offering to allow more than 2 class traits & skills.

Yeah that would be so nice, Id take a Guardian/Mesmer in a heartbeat ^^
Imagine the joy of being able to utilizie Guardians Support with Timewarp from Mesmer with Guardians Staff and Guardian Scepter/Mesmer Pistol.
You would only see those classes doing dungeons

This was implemented into Guild Wars 1. The problem with this is it makes the game impossible to balance and also gets rid or unique components of each profession. In Guild Wars 1 for instance it was not uncommon to find teleporting Monk/Assassins or Monk/Warriors who used stances to stay alive. Any profession could take pets (eliminating one of the Ranger unique components), and in the end it didn’t really matter what profession you chose at the start as you could generally have access to any other profession’s unique abilities.
I would rather like to see more weapon skills implemented. Consider having 2 sets of weapons skills for each weapon set (though making you only able to choose which one you employed before combat). For instance they could add a set of combat skills for the Ranger axes, or an alternative Engineer rifle build for 1200+ ranges, or even a closer ranged combo for pistol/pistol or pistol/shield. I would argue that the Elementalist probably shouldn’t have this, but it would work for any other class.
