Need Dwarves and Elves races.
I think it is fairly obvious that the elven thing is against ANets vision for the game. I will say that there is absolutely no way for us to know for sure that ALL dwarves were turned to stone. Its part of the devs teams rights/responsibilities to create exciting plot twists and such. One of these may bring about the return of Dwarves in some way.
I however find it much more likely that they will add the ability to play as one of the races currently in the game that have been displaced by the dragons. Such as the Kodun.
Just my thoughts.

Ree: All of the dwarves eventually participated in the ritual. There are no non-stone dwarves in Tyria.

There is Tyria, the land where LA is and there is Tyria, the world. They could always bring back dwarves and claim this note meant all the dwarves in Tyria, the land and not Tyria, the world.
Unlikely, maybe. But it gives them an way to do it IF they decided they wanted dwarves back.
Elves are cliche?
Wtf are humans then?

That would only work if we ignore the question. the question was asked taking the entire world into account.
Are there dwarves then who are not stone out in the world somewhere still (assuming then there were some dwarves who did not participate)?
So they ask “Are there dwarves out in the world somewhere that did not participate?” Then the answer is “All dwarves participated. There are no non-stone dwarves in Tyria.”
More than one dwarf exists. There is a Durmand Priory member in one of the shiverpeak maps (not sure where, pretty sure it’s not at their HQ) who mentions that a lot of the dwarves were turned to stone but there are a few that have survived. POSSIBLE RACE? I think so.

read post above this one.
@Roman Legionary : Read the wiki about Dwarves. Eventually, ALL of the Dwarves were turned into stone, even Odgen who was the last one to be on the surface.

This assumes two things:
1) that all the dwarves that were in the original game were accounted for. It’s a fantasy world if they want to make it happen they could invent a situation where some dwarves (unbeknownst to anyone else) did not partake in the ritual. I mean until they created the asura in Eye of the North there was absolutely no indication of their existence at all. Who can say that there is absolutely no way whatsoever that dwarves could make a return?
2)that there won’t be some reason that they want to say “screw it, we said there weren’t any but the player base wants it so lets bring them back somehow.” As if ANet has never said one thing and done exactly the opposite ever.
I am not trying to argue the lore. I am not trying to say that dwarves are a guarantee, what I am trying to say is that what looks fairly solid now in terms of lore could be changed with one genius idea from a random dev. For that matter we could see elves eventually if they really wanted to add them. I just think that dwarves are far more likely since they already exist, and ANet has generally shied away from western fantasy.

It doesn’t assume it, it confirms it. The devs can always change their mind about anything. They could turn the sylvari into elves if they want to. So that really isn’t an issue. My point is that right now, we have word of god saying that all the dwarves in the world are stone. That all dwarves in the world undertook the right. They could introduce Orcs into the world if they want to.
If the devs change their mind, they can’t say “We never said it” or “never intended it”. But they wouldn’t need to. All they’d need to say is that “We changed our mind”. Changing their mind goes without saying because it applies to anything and everything. Including spaceships, a ring to rule all rings, etc.
wouldn’t asura fill the role of elves? i mean come on lol
shot, ugly, kitten geniuses way ahead of everyone else(although only on par with charr)),the only thing missing is their beards and excessive drinking and the norns more than make up for that lol
in my opinion the developers split up those two races’ qualities/lore into four of the ones we have
dwarf would be the asura and norns for their germanic style norn wise and technological advancement asura wise
elf is,as stated previously, the sylvari and humans’
and charr just fill the role of the beast race that is just a whole species of BAMFs
you have as many Oscars as Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp. :)
With the expansion into the sea of sorrows, we could get VERY lucky and get Tengu as a new race to play with… that would be totally amazing at this point. Note that the Aetherblades are sky pirates and Tengu are people from the wind lands. Last but not least, the migtly floating castle that is seen from Wizard’s Folly: ISGARREN, is within the Sea of Sorrows.
Now imagine GW2 year 1 celebration = new race to play with the Sea of Sorrows expansion… mind blowing awesomeness. So yes screw elves and dwarves, bring in the new content.

Why is this thread still getting attention.
Dwarves will get some play time most likely NPCs
Elves will never happen
nuff said stop posting… sheesh
Should play WoW then.
Anet fix thief plz its boring now :(
Clones. I bet some tricky Asura is working on clone technology and has Dwarven tissue samples from before the ritual.
Not that I want this game to add races that are standard in fantasy just because they are standard, but there is an in-lore means by which anything could be added: The Mists.
Humans came to Tyria long ago via the Mists. Clearly they brought along cats, dogs, chickens, cows … not horses for some reason, or else all the horses died out in some horrible equine plague, or centaurs happened from an experiment gone wrong, who knows? (Since there are horse-references by NPCs here and there). Anyway, that must have been a mass migration. Another race could arrive the same way.
Like Elder Scrolls and now GW2, Dwarves are fine as they are… dead.
Elves, most annoying race ever, and I’m not so sure I like the Sylvari that much either, but at least I like them more than Asura, heh.
Anyhow, I liked marnick’s comment, if you cannot get your head around Arena.net’s world where dwarves are extinct and elves don’t exist… why on earth should a fantasy world always contain these species, it’s ridiculous…
WoW is that way >>>>>>>>>>>

My thoughts exactly. Tyria could refer to either the continent or the entire planet. It could be that dwarves are kaput on the continent but a sprawling dwarven metropolis could be somewhere we’ve never been before.
Elves? please no, I’ve had enough elves to last me a loong while. Anet did a nice thing making the ‘elfish’ race into the youngest instead of the old, decrepit ancient one.
All the Dwarves except Ogden were turned to stone to fight the first dragon that appeared in GW:EotN. So Ogden is the only one left. And Sylvari are the “Elf” race of Tyria.
Uh, Ogden was turned to stone, what with the gray skin and the fact that he is 300 years old.
Also, in the “had everything, got full of themselves, and thus is now in decline” manner, humans are kind of the elves of GW2 :/
I love the way they divided up ‘traditional’ elven and human attributes between the Sylvari and Humans.
Agreed. I was tired of humans always being the ‘young race that was replacing everyone else’. Even though the ancient races have ability and power that human can’t even fathom. It’s fine for the ones that do it but there’s no reason it needs to be that way for everyone.
