As hilarious as it is to see deer attacking players, it seems more realistic for them to flee.
I understand that not all creatures would choose flight over a fight (dolyaks, perhaps, or possibly some breeds of moa), but really… Deer? Fireflies? Salmon? These animals aren’t exactly the rough-and-tumble sort.

I think it is also important to consider that difficulties in targeting can often accidentally turn these creatures hostile in the middle of a fight, which results in a skittish woodland creature charging into battle with a human and a burly monstrosity of some sort. It’s just not natural!

Speaking of natural, it is interesting to see wolves, stalkers, and similar creatures attacking their prey, only to have the prey fight back (and sometimes win). I think it would be more appropriate for the prey to attempt flight, at least with creatures known for their scampering-off abilities (the deer example works well here).

Finally, I sometimes fall from cliffs, tower walls, and slightly large boulders. It’s just a problem I have, and I can’t seem to stop. I took a guardian trait to reduce the damage, but when I land next to a neutral creature, I frighten it so badly that it starts attacking me! I assume it’s the Symbol of Protection that suddenly appears, but honestly, shouldn’t this whole encounter spook the poor thing into running away, rather than turning to fight?

TL;DR: Neutral creatures based on herbivorous/prey species should prefer to run away when attacked, not fight back.

Has nobody else thought the same about this?

Why wouldn’t a deer attack you with its antlers ? As for fire flies im pretty sure it would be dead if you smacked it with a greatsword or an axe to begin with so you cant really apply logic there which may be your problem to begin with . you cant really apply logic to an MMO where you can fire rockets from your crotch and shoot fire from your hands

For those with natural weapons and bigger sizes, it still makes sense to attack.

But with others like does, they should try to run away.
It should not be a problem for those trying to kill them, as everyone should bring some kind of snare along.
Once snared, they’ll stop running away and attack, since they’ll be cornered.

This isn’t gonna work the way you intend it to. It will become way to butt-frustrating to chase down a constantly-fleeing enemy, and eventually pull you into a hostile enemy. It will only cause more frustration aside from all the bugs that blocks progression (personal story, map quests/tasks).

Don’t underestimate the salmon and the moa. I’ve heard horror stories about the moa. And I watched a shark take on a salmon… and lose. O.o

Yeah, same here, except I was watching a deer fight a jaguar. The deer was winning by quite a margin. After a while, I couldn’t take it anymore and felt sorry for the jaguar, so I shot the deer dead with my bow.

Why in the world would I be chasing down a deer in the first place? And I’m not aware of any personal story missions, tasks, or dynamic events which rely on killing them…

If it were that big an issue, though, and I absolutely had to kill a fleeing animal, I could still use ranged attacks. Just don’t attack it until you’re up close, then you have plenty of time to hit it while it tries to flee out of your range.

Okay, so I did a task for Snow Leopard this morning in which I turned into a leopard, snarled at bushes, and had to chase down the things that ran out of them. While they were running, they were yellow. Once I hit them with an attack, they turned red and fought back. I would argue that they should keep running, but the snow leopard form should have some kind of skill that would make the direct confrontation unnecessary. The deer/raccoon/moa could keep trying to run, but it would be crippled or the man-leopard would be faster. Perhaps the “pounce” skill could be like the ranger’s “Swoop” skill, or the guardian’s “Leap of Faith,” and it would close the distance.

Dolyaks, boars, some moas, and possibly stags could choose to stand and fight, though I’ve not known a stag to actually do that in real life (especially when attacked with a ranged weapon, or simply startled). When cornered, of course, they would try to fight however they could.

I don’t think the flight mechanic (to flee, I mean, not to fly) would be a problem, as I’ve actually had some things run away from me in a fight— centaurs, perhaps, and sometimes krait. In those cases, however, it wasn’t a problem to chase them down and finish the job.

i support this idea. It’s annoying when I accidentally aggro yellows when fighting something else.

You are not one of their “most dedicated players”. Don’t worry, neither am I apparently.

I really like this idea. It would make the game more lively and realistic.
