Even if there are already rumours about giving each class the possibility to use all the weapons, I thought about a possible re-arrangement of the currently availability to make each weapon perfectly matched with the class that they are going to be with.
Even if the initial matching is good, I see potential; following are the slight additions that I would make with the current weapons, while trying to preserve the feeling that each profession should give.

To be honest, I don’t feel like each class should be open to all the weapons because otherwise professions would lose that sense of uniqueness and difference. I know that most of you would like to amplify their skill sets, but I encourage this by adding new weapons to the game.

Elementalist
NEW – Sword – In the main hand only, a one-handed sword is a must for almost each class. Spellcasters can use it without risks, and it provides basic defense without unbalancing the schemes, since they can summon conjured weapons of other kind.
NEW – Torch – In the off hand only, a torch is a common tool that anyone can use, providing already existing flames to manipulate fire, or already existing fire to interact with other elements.
NEW – Scepter – In both hands. It would be a good matching to use two scepters at once to power up their spells.

Warrior
Warriors have already access to most of the weapons in game, so there’s really few that can be done here.
NEW – Torch – In both hands. Common tool that can be used by everyone, but of course warriors would use it in a more offensive way.

Guardian
NEW – Shield – In both hands. A pure defensive bodyguard focused on pushing back enemies while standing on its ground and resisting or blocking attacks.
NEW – Warhorn – In off hand only. Inspiring courage and boons that your voice alone can’t provide.
NEW – Mace – In both hands. Because a double club fits the figure of a Guardian.

Engineer
NEW – Torch – In off hand only. Fire is always good for gunpowders.

Ranger
NEW – Dagger – In both hands. It won’t create much problems, but it would provide a more savage look.
NEW – Sword – In both hands. It’s a basic weapon who don’t slow them down.
NEW – Rifle – To provide a more hunter look which can fit in with modern techs.
DOWN – Greatsword – It’s too heavy in concept for a character like a ranger to swing. Original, but heavy.

Thief
NEW – Rifle – A good addition to provide a more sniping attitude.

Necromancer
NEW – Torch – In off hand only. Greenish fire is a good way to cauterize and reduce everything to ashes.
NEW – Shortbow – Spreading malary and pestilence through arrows.

Mesmer
NEW – Longbow – Nobles are supposed to know archery too.
NEW – Rifle – Hunting for nobility
DOWN – Greatsword – It’s not so elegant, after all.

Yeah … all those rangers and mesmers with soulbound legendary greatsword shall salvage them and redo the work to get another.

If three classes don’t need a bigger choice of weapons those were Warrior, Guardian and Ranger.

I don’t understand how you let Ranger dual wield swords and say that the GS is too heavy …

My complete list would rather be like:

  • Warrior
    • Mace (Dual; no Mace/ Sword)
    • Sword (Dual; no Sword/ Mace)
    • Shield
    • Warhorn
    • Greatsword
    • Bow
  • Guardian
    • Mace (Dual)
    • Sword (MH)
    • Scepter
    • Focus
    • Shield (OH and single wield (like a two handed weap))
    • Hammer
    • Staff
  • Engineer
    • Mace (MH)
    • Pistol (Dual)
    • Sword (MH)
    • Shield
    • Torch
    • Hammer
    • Rifle
  • Ranger
    • Dagger (Dual)
    • Sword (MH)
    • Torch
    • Warhorn
    • Bow
    • Rifle
  • Thief
    • Dagger (Dual; no Dagger/ Sword)
    • Sword (Dual)
    • Pistol (Dual)
    • Torch
    • Katar (Two handed); maybe re-use another two handed weapon with different looks
  • Elementalist
    • Dagger (Dual)
    • Sword (MH)
    • Scepter
    • Focus
    • Shield
    • Torch
    • Staff
  • Mesmer
    • Dagger (Dual) or Sword (Dual)
    • Pistol (Dual; no Pistol/ Dagger or Pistol/ Sword)
    • Scepter (no Scepter/ Dagger or Scepter/ Sword)
    • Focus
    • Shield
    • Torch
    • Hammer (melee) or Staff (melee)
    • Rifle or Bow
    • Staff
  • Necromancer
    • Dagger (Dual)
    • Sword (MH)
    • Scepter
    • Focus
    • Torch or Warhorn
    • Staff
    • Weaponless

So, no need of

  • Long-/ Shortbow
  • Axe

Uhm, that’s true. it would be better not to put down weapons but only add ones

If three classes don’t need a bigger choice of weapons those were Warrior, Guardian and Ranger.

You’re considering only the number of weapons here, but I’m more concerned about giving them combinations without denaturalizing the classes with weapons that don’t match them.

I don’t understand how you let Ranger dual wield swords and say that the GS is too heavy …

It’s simple, the average weight for a greatsword is about 5 kg, while a one handed sword can be about 1,5 kg. But a greatsword is heavy to swing even with two hands, while one handed sword is not much of an effort. Since Ranger are not huge people and muscled guys who rely on brute strenght to hit, but are more about tactics and swiftness, a dual wield would help them fighting with lightness while hitting vital points.

The term “greatsword” does not specify the weight. Even long sword could be used with a single hand (but not dual wielded). Dual wielded weapons were rather daggers or short swords and not swords.
1.5kg is the weight of katanas, which were one-and-half-handers for slender humans. European swords were not much heavier (afaik).

5kg is rather a hammer, than a sword, which is still mean to cut, not crush.

On contrary, bows were heavy and strong. Since you didn’t mobility, you could be sturdy. Heavy bows with strong strings to reach more than 20m needed strong guys.

I think there is a misunderstanding here: by both hands I mean one in the main hand and one in the off hand, not both hands on one sword.

RE: Dual-Swords
Well, that’s the misconception we see from a lot of fantasy literature and (tabletop) RPGs. AFAIK – dual-wielding swords (particularly two of the exact same size and weight) is not a terribly easy thing to do. Take Japanese swordplay for instance. The Katana is a good bit longer/heavier than the Wakizashi. As for Western swords, your typical dual-wield was a Rapier, Shortsword or Smallsword in MH, Dagger OH.
Don’t get me wrong, I never minded the idea of dual-Sword combat. But, as a person
who’s actually tried it RL, with appropriate-sized weaponry … it’s not something most
would be able to pull off. For instance, Mesmers being more of a “Theatric” character-
type, shouldn’t get away with it. Or a Thief, considering their focus on speed over brute force.
But, that’s the fun thing about a “fantasy” setting, we worry less about RL logic, and go with what looks hella BA. With that, the current weapon assortment, even the “oddball” choices, is fine. Although, I’d add a few things, for sure.

All Classes
Unarmed Combat. Differentiated style-wise between each class.

Elementalist:
OH Scepter
MH Focus
MH Torch

Necromancer:
Scythe
OH Torch
Whip

Mesmer:
MH Focus (Or War Fans for MH/OH)
MH Pistol
Whip

Ranger:
MH Dagger (thrown: rework OH Dagger #5 as an evade move, else dual-Dagger’d be a bit redundant)
MH Torch
Staff

Thief:
Katar/Claw
(Melee) Staff
Shuriken/Kunai

Engineer:
MH Mace
Tesla Coil/Lightning Gun
Sonic Gun (Seriously, why do we not have those for PC characters?)

Guardian:
Polearm (I could see Glaives looking really stylish on ’em)
Flail
Weighted Chain

Warrior:
Polearm (Yay, Halberds.)
Flail
OH Dagger

Malegryne (Sylvari Mesmer), Lannka (Asura Thief) – Ferguson’s Crossing: [PRD/BRB/OMFG]
Other 80s: Any but Warrior

Guardian:
- New: Warhorn, Longbow

Warrior:
- They already have enough choices

Ranger
- New: Guns, seriously, can’t understand they can’t wield them
- Down: Greatword

Casters:
- Down: Greatsword

Thief:
- Can’t think of anything

Engineer:
- They have enough weapons

I just wish javelins were an option. Imagine how cool it would be seeing a Guardian with a javelin (permanent throwing, just like arrows never run down) and a shield in his/her offhand Jolly

Now my 2 cents.

It’s NEVER going to happen that the number of weapons classes can use are decreased.

Now I’ll give you 2 suggestions for each class.

Elementalist:
OH torch: fire -> another set of fireskills, like spitting fire; water -> mistskills like blinding or regen; air -> skills that resemble a firestorm; earth -> lava-based skills
MH axe: How this elementalists remind me of WoW-shamans, there’s need for axes here. And yes, they know how to wield them properly, they can even summon them.
(little off-topic: is anybody using weapon summoning skills in decent builds?)

Warrior:
OH dagger: used for finishing your foes, every knight, soldier, w/e was running with a back-up knife or dagger which was used to finish off armoured enemys after wrestling them down.
OH torch: who doesn’t miss the picture of an medieval/fantasy-army marching illuminated through the night, who doesn’t love torchlight processions at all?

Ranger:
OH pistol: we know the ranger likes it quiet, but an ace in the hole is the best life insurance.
MH dagger: as already suggested, this would be lovely.

Necromancer:
OH torch: plague-flame-spitting maniacs? check! (green flames of course)
shortbow: Was also already suggested, would just love to see something like that, I mean, c’mon, banging around with magical-infected arrows? Who wouldn’t like that?

Guardian:
OH horn: the most obvious. I’m even wondering why this ins’t already usable. Buffing and stuff.
longbow: yes this is a guardian. A guardian also guards gates. And what do you do when you see a bunch of foes trying to rush your beloved castle? No, you don’t charge into them like a mentally disturbed suicidial person. You try to get them off this kitten castle. What would work better than a magically enhanced longbow?

Thief:
MH mace: what is better for knocking somebody out than a lovely blunt club?
rifle: I know it’s hard to loot somebody after killing him from long distance, but it’s safe, modern assasins do the same (ask Kennedy! oh wait…). As long as the thief isn’t screwing up like this guy ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yx-hdWXuXZQ ) it should work well.

Engineer:
OH torch: igniting your matchlock pistol and letting your enemys look like Niki Lauda at the same time? Definitely!
hammer: what does an engineer want more than a weapon used for smacking faces and repairing/destroying stuff?

Mesmer:
MH pistol: Sometimes you just want to keep your hands clean in a normal way.
OH horn: Just tell me, what’s more confusing than a shizo running around with a vuvuzela?!

Shirk over and out.
