I’ve read a few things about people asking for new weapons and classes etc. and ANET responding with “it’s mote likely to see new skills” and thought I’d make a suggestion.

I think people would appreciate the addition of at least one new weapon skill per class while we wait for net new weapons. By that, I don’t mean additions to CURRENT weapon sets, I mean the addition of a NEW weapon wielding ability.

My recommendation for new weapon wielding abilities, allow:

Elementalist:
- allow them to use Greatsword

Engineers:
- Shortbow

Guardians:
- off-hand sword

Mesmer:
- Main hand pistol

Necromancer:
- off hand axe

Ranger:
- Rifle

Thief:
- Longbow

Warrior:
- Torch

I think it would be an easy update, and would allow players to explore new play styles with their current characters, or start a new character because they can play new classes with new weapons

Well, since you bumped it, I’ll bite.

I think it would be an easy update

It would actually be a pretty significant update, since it would mean developing new skill sets, complete with icons and new animations for each move, which would have to receive some amount of balancing work. Maybe not necessarily a huge update, but considering balance work that could be done with existing skills, adding new ones might be more difficult than you think.

As for your class/weapon choices, I’m just going to comment on Elementalists, since they’re my favorite. I wouldn’t give them greatswords, as those are already extremely popular and I think giving them to Elementalists would take away from the visual distinctiveness of Mesmers using them. I’d rather see Eles use something a little more original, like a mainhand torch or even dual-wielding shields. Both options would make for visually-distinct styles (channeling energy through weapons that would be poor as mainhand weapons for physical classes,) that give some love to otherwise underused weapons.

You’re probably right about the amount of effort it would take, but still probably less than introducing new weapons entirely, no?

I see you haven’t met the dual wielding wheel shields guy in Dark Souls before.

That said, yeah, greatswords are super popular. I’m also pretty confident anet is going to open more weapon types to more classes before adding whole new types of weapons. It’s going to be a huge pain for them to do, and I’m sure there will be a lot of confusion and whining when it first launches. Especially if classes people perceive as being unloved don’t get as much cool stuff.

As a Guardian i dont want off-hand sword. I feel that if all can use the same weapons they be to much alike. I would rather se they change the torch-skills so it more worked like a melee weapon. Now its more used at range.

I like most of your suggestions, but I have to disagree with some:

Engineer + shortbow: It doesn’t make sense to me, why would the most advanced technicians in Tyria put away their guns to go back shooting with a simple bow? If they ever get a bow-like weapon, then it is a crossbow.

Guardian + off-hand sword: As much as cool dual-wielding is, a dual-wielding sword Guardian doesn’t fit to its concept for me. Two swords are way too fierce for a Guardian, it is more for a offensive fighter (like Warrior), not for a “protector”. And not only dual-wielding swords, you could combine it with mace/sword and zepter/sword as well, which imo would be strange and not guardian-like.

Ranger + rifle: This had been discussed so many times in the forums, everyone got his own opinion about it. If there is something which is hard to discuss, then it is this. I’m one of those, who likes rifles, don’t get me wrong, but I think a rifle wouldn’t fit on the concept of a Ranger. They have a connection to the spirits of the nature, they protect the wildlife, they have this special touch which gives them this little druid trait. They use their old-faishoned weapons including both melee and ranged weapons. Now having a rifle, I don’t know, it doesn’t fit to me. I’ve always seen them living with the nature, not giving technological progress much attention. But I understand the people who see the ranger on a different way, having no problems with a rifle.

Thief + longbow: For me this doesn’t fit. Thiefs love small, fast and accurate weapons, the longbow is way too big and too slow for a Thief. They already have their shortbows, which is fine as it is.

I think ranger with a staff, or offhand shield would work better then rifle.

Staff would open up some spirit utility places with the ranger, whereas shield could open a more defensive option so that GS could be more offensive.

Staff 1- Sharp Leaf- Release a gust of leaves that causes cripple (1s) (2 second CD)(500 range)
Staff 2- Spear of the Wild- Leap forward and strike your enemy causing damage and immobilize for X second.
Staff 3- Spirit of the Fern- A cool mist surrounds you which causes regeneration on allies and poison on enemies.
Staff 4- Spirit of the Bear- A wave of energy that causes protection on allies and causes damage to foes.
Staff 5- Spirit Wolves- Summon a pack of spirit wolves that cause damage and grants frenzy to allies. (45 seconds CD)(Lasts 10 seconds)

Shield 4- Natures Fury- Smash the enemy with your shield causing immobilize and increasing the next attack by your pet by 40%
Shield 5- Natures Wrath- Spin with your shield causing damage and dazing your target. Stuns if hit from behind.

When dual-wielding pistols give us the same barrage (with sound) that our phantasmal duelist has.

I will spend 2309842098492842390 gems for this.

I like your ideas. The only two I disagree with are the Ranger & Thief.

THere should be a new weapon type for the Ranger / Warrior class and that would be 2Handed Axe. Complete with big hitting combos and maybe a CC push.

THis is a 2handed in this GW2 image because there is not an axe of this size currently in the game. (see image below)

Then the Thief should get the rifle (see image below). So you could play a covert Sniper style. Longer range shots and maybe a trait bonus that the further away you are up to a max you gain a larger damage bonus (similar to the trait for Ranger and longbow).

Anyway just some suggestions.
