Does the Mesmer need a new main hand weapon? Well, maybe. I’d say yes. I’ll explain later why.

No, I’m not trolling. I’m talking about the main hand pistol!!
Does a Main hand pistol work thematically? Yes.
I was reading through Guru and a guy mentioned the fact that there are two phantasmal pistols named after the two sisters Lyss and Ilya who make up the godess Lyssa – who also is the symbol for the mesmer.
Sadly, the mesmer can only carry one pistol at a time (off-hand).
It doesnt have to be that way though.
First of all, don’t be worried about the thematical issue about Mesmers not being weapon wielders but rather mages. A phantasmal pistol doesnt have to behave like a normal pistol.
Thematically, it can work pretty well. But there is a bigger issue. Does the Mesmer really need another main hand weapon?
Well yeah. The reason for this is because some off-hand weapons, especially the torch but also the pistol have very limited use. Actually, well, all of them have only a very specific use in a specific combination.
Currently, what you’ll see in PvE and PvP are mostly Greatswords and Staff but also fixed combinations like Sword+Pistol and Scepter+Focus. There is barely any variation from that whatsoever (yes, theres Sword+Sword in sPvP and sometimes something crazier than that). But the main issue would be, there is no main hand item that benifits from basically all the off-handers.
TL;DR? Start here
So here’s my suggestion for the three skills for the Mesmer main hand pistol:
Spell 1
Projectile Autoattack, 900 range. Deals damage on hit, also deals bonus damage when hitting a target that suffers from at least one condition. (Autoattack)
Spell 2
Phantasmal. 1200 Range. Spawns an illusion on the enemies position on hit. For a certain amount of time (3-5 secs) the spell can be activated again and pulls the enemy back to the illusion. The Phantasmal also applies a random condition (Bleeding, Toxic, Blindness or Frost) on each attack (Attacks about every 7 seconds) (~15 Seconds Cooldown)
Spell 3
900 Range. Deals damage and immobilizes the enemy for 3 seconds. When the player is invisible while the spell is casted, it will stun the enemy instead for 2 seconds, deals bonus damage [and/or resets the cooldown of this spell (?)]. (At least 12 seconds cooldown)
The whole thing would synergize well with the torch (Conditions, Invisibility) and a second pistol (Stun Combo, Immobilize/Stun for the pistol illusion, Pull) but also works with focus (Hard CC) and maybe even with swords (2 sets switching between pistol-sword and sword-pistol for melee/short range madness)
Those combinations would be valid in both PvE and PvP (especially World vs World but I guess also in sPvP).
It would make items such as the torch or the off hand pistol more useful for Mesmers and allow a bit more variety in the weapon set choice.
