New races!
also where the hell did you get that the charrs are woodland creatures? have you seen their city?
Outside Black Citadel there is a lot of forests. There are no jungles, mountains or seas there. I suggest you get out of the City and see the lands.
Skritt are only good for an NPC race..imo
Making them playable would not work…imo
Largos neither. Yes they can breathe on land but most the game is on land which may not be good for them or it wouldnt make sense. Kinda like making quaggin a playable race…that wouldnt work either. They spend most the time in water only coming to land if they have to. THey would say in water permanently if it wasnt for Bubbles chasing them out of the unending ocean/
Kodan = Playable race of epic polar bears.
Largos have legs you know. They work just fine on land, as evidenced by several non-player characters throughout the game and even the personal story. Just because they’re more at home in the water doesn’t mean they wouldn’t venture on land.
Kodan aren’t happening. Too many already in-game, no overarching government beyond many tribes that are all structured the same, and very slim customization potential (there’s not even a visible difference between males and females – try selling that).
Player races will have to bring something to the table that isn’t already offered, and both tengu and largos do that very well.
i think the only playable reaces should be is 1 kodan. 2 centars. or 3 the bird things. because anything else don’t make sense.

centaur is a no go because the entire race is xenophobic, meaning they’d never strike up an alliance with the playable races.
and the bird things are called tengu.
Elonan centaurs might be a possibility, but that very much depends on the art department. How will they animate something like Death Blossom for a centaur? Much less fit them with world armor. Possible, but a lot of work that may not pay off.

the amusing image of a centaur spinning in mid air has made my week. thank you good sir.

There are several centaur NPCs friendly to humans and if I’m not mistaken at least one tribe that is as well.
And since when are they xenophobic? I haven’t seen any evidence of that, they hate humans because humans took their lands from them, the exact same reason the Charr have hated humans for so long, and the Charr are already a playable race.

The Charr got their land back. They also look at the bigger picture and see that the elder dragons are a threat that must be eliminated before everything else. It’s the entire reason for the ebonhawk treaty. The Centaur however haven’t given a single thought towards the elder dragons and have continuously attempted to conquer Kryta.
While yes, there is a clan that has a peace treaty with lions arch, that’s about the only example that i can remember from my interactions with the centaur.
Also, there was a discussion in the lore forums about why sylvari have a form that resembles humans, when it’s ventari’s teachings that they revere, and it was discussed how the extremely hostile nature of the centaur would have prevented the sylvari from helping out against the elder dragons had they taken the form of centaur, so the pale tree gave them human forms.

good luck animating a centaur swimming. or doing a jumping puzzle. or using death blossom.

i saw them. and the charr are wiping the place clean.
they aren’t woodland creatures. they just happen to live in a place with trees.
Swimming and jumping wouldn’t really be a problem, but some of the skills certainly would be. And, again, we have the issue of armor. Look how that was fitted to charr models. If you don’t think tengu (and kodan for that matter, as slim a chance they have at becoming a player race) aren’t going to see the same result, well I got a highway to sell you. I don’t even what to imagine how that would end up for centaur.
^ tengus and kodan are at least bipedal humanoids. it might be silly to see a kodan death blossoming, but not sillier than a norn or charr.
a centaur? i mean, seriously, just picture a horse doing a backflip. now make it spin at the same time. it looks beyond stupid.
as for armor looks, it worked fine on charrs, would work on kodan and tengus fine (kodan even have the advantage of not being all hunchbacked like charrs and tengus)
I think Tengu armor might take awhile to customize but Kodan seem similar to Nord except for head pieces might have to be geared differently.
Personally i think all of the above choices should be tied to a dragon or expansion.
The Kodan should join up when we fight Jormag.
The Largos should join up when we fight Bubbles.
The skritt should join up when we fight Primordus.
The Tengu idk, but surely there is a dragon that a stake in the fight against.
My moves are fresh, like my groceries.

If they did expansions that way (and I sincerely hope they don’t, because things will get dull awfully fast unless they have a fast release cycle), then everything but skritt makes sense. Pitting tengu against Primordus is the best fit, since they’re already having to deal with destroyers anyone. Skritt being a minor race rules them out of playability, and the fact that they already have a city.
I’m pretty sure any new player race will have to have a light presence in the world already, so their introduction doesn’t require the team to extensively rework existing content to fit them in. That said, I’m sure they’ll handwave new races doing old content as the character acting on their own or something to that effect, but they’ll still have change a few small things for tengu (if only just dialog).
I think Skritt fit Primordus because the destroyers have pushed the skritt from their homes- or at least they did in my story.
And i wasn’t trying to say that an elder dragon should equal an expansion, i just listed the race releases i think fit each dragon.

Making a new race involves creating new personal story missions (quiet a few of them due to branching paths), a new home city, likely a new region to go with the home city (and add area for story missions to), new character models and animations, and likely would have to involve adding additional storyline elements to involve the new race in world events (all the current races are represented in story missions but any new race would not be). As a result, its likely that new races would only be introduced as part of a major expansion (something like an expansion pack), would be released very slowly (one at a time) and probably would be an entirely new race since a shiny new race is more interesting then reusing an old race.
I think it will happen, but not in the way people are asking for right now.
ANet, please do not add underwater butterflydrow to the game, they are a terribly designed race… I have no idea what the guy who thought these up was on when he did, but never let him have any of it ever EVER again.
I laughed when I saw that comment. Butterflydrow is very fitting. OK, the skintone’s wrong but the white hair, leather/rubberwear and attitude fit the part. Plus I found a male version underwater the other day and he had pointy elf ears. Might as well have called him Drizzt and have done with it.
I like quaggan though. They don’t remind me of anything else in any other game, at least nothing I can think of right now. I have doubts about any underwater race spending extended time above land but if they can hang out by the fountain in my personal instance, at least they can say it isn’t a complete deal-breaker. It’s not like that poor whale in LA right now.

don’t forget “making sure every armor existing in the game needs to be compatible”.
The way the implemented armors in the game won’t make it too hard to fit them all together. They have very few unique armor pieces for normal play. My human has looked the same pretty much throughout the entire leveling process. The problem is making special armor fit and there is not TOO many of those really.
I think a bigger question would be how long it takes for them to make main cities and leveling zones and if they even want to seeing as most people just flock to Lions Arch. Once they devise a way to get more traffic back into the racial cities THEN they will develop more of them.
I want them to add dwarves. yes the lore says they were killed or turned to stone, but there are gaps in it that could be used to bring them back. I just miss dwarves. and give rangers use of rifles at that point.
there is still some tengu areas to be explored, maybe they make them playable.
Would be awesome (if they also add a free slot for char creation)!
Honestly , tengu to me seems a boring race , i would go for kodan/largos , still i already got a norn , so also no point in lvling a kodan , which is why i vote 100% for largos to be implemented soon.
Okay, if I may say, to those who have never seen a horse in action before, please shut your mouths about animation difficulties, it is blatantly obvious you have no idea what you are talking about. Horses can jump very well, even vertically if trained to do so, and they can also swim very well. Yes animations like Death Blossom will be challenging, but honestly, does death blossom look even remotely possible on any race? No, it’s an impossible movement, but this is a fantasy game for a reason.

actually gymnasts have achieved a similar feat during events. Sure, maybe not as high or as far, but people have done the jump and twist in mid air. it’s actually fairly common in gymnastic events.
so yes, centaurs won’t become an option because:
1) they just hate. as discussed earlier they don’t have the foresight to put aside their differences with divinity’s reach as the charr have.
2) animations for skills such as death blossom and dagger storm would be so far beyond reality that it would look horrible. Also, i’ve seen horses in action, and let me tell you something like dagger storm would not be possible in the slightest.
3) armour difficulties. try putting boots on a horse. As well, because they’re quadrepedal, leggings would be almost impossible to animate on the centaur.
4) they need to be able to have a capital city, of which we’ve seen no sign of. True, we havent completely explored tyria yet, but the in game structures we’ve seen in game are on par with the lesser races such as skritt, hylek and even ogres. and lesser races aren’t going to be features as playable unless there is either a visible change in game or the complete destruction of lore.
so there you have it, centaurs won’t become playable races, neither will any of the featured lesser races.
Kodan would have a better chance of becoming playable than the centaur, largos higher and tengu higher still. I personally can’t wait for the tengu to be released. it shall be awesome.

death blossom is a front flip with a twist. gymnasts do that all the time, if you watch the olympics.

From a flat-footed position or without a springboard, no it’s not. If this is possible, show somebody doing it, a near 90 degree vertical somersault six feet or more in to the air from a standing position, changing your momentum to spin at least five or six rotations while in the air, then landing on your feet only a two or three feet from where you started. Somewhat, kind of similar things are possible, but that exact movement, not by a longshot.

Like you said, its an online game with magic and dragons and things. They can do it because it looks cool and its not too far out of the bounds of reality. But come on, a horse? Doing multiple flips? Besides the initial funniness of it, it would be completely ridiculous.

people can do backflips from still position. people can do twists from still position. people can do both from a still position.
horses can’t even get to the backflip part.
oh, and here’s a clip from the trials, on a tightpole. yes, she loses her balance. but she’s on the trials, so she’s not even a finalist, AND she’s doing it on top of a pole. tell a horse to do that.
It’s almost certain that Tengu will be the first new playable race, since they were originally planned as one from the beginning, but were dropped due to lack of time. I expect we’ll see them make their entrance with the Canthan expansion for GW2.
I personally would love for the Skritt to be a playable race, but it’s highly unlikely that they will be due to lore factors. (Skritt become less intelligent the farther they are away from other members of their species, which wouldn’t make sense for a Skritt PC.)
Hylek were built to be a non-player race from the start, so it’s also unlikely they’ll be a candidate.
The Kodan are a good possibility, but I think they share too much overlap with the Norn (large, arctic-bound race).
The Largos are another high possibility, but given that they’re an aquatic race, it may not make sense for them to undertake adventures which would take them far away from the water for extended periods of time. The same restriction makes the Quaggan also unlikely as a playable race. Coupled with the fact that Quaggans consider violence to be a great taboo among their kind means that an adventuring Quaggan would be ostracised by their own species.
While I don’t think it’s likely we’ll see Centaurs as a playable race, given how strongly the Centaurs feature as antagonists for Human characters, it is a remote possibility for the Elonian expansion. However, issues like animations, jumping puzzles and underwater combat might make them unviable as long-term playable characters.
I personally would like to see the Naga become a playable race, possibly with the Canthan expansion. From GW1, Naga do not seem to suffer unduly from extended periods away from the water, would be capable of underwater combat in a manner similar to the Krait, and should still be capable of jumping with coiled leaps. The Krait Witch’s model indicates that female serpentoids do look sufficiently distinct from their male counterparts, which means it would be possible to design armor and appearances for them. (Whether or not players would actually be interested in playing a reptilian race, however, is another question.)
guys question: whats a largos exactly?? or is this a race from gw2 cause i dont remember a race called like that in gw1

They have been introduced in a few places here in GW2 and had no mention in GW1, much like some of the secondary/minor races.
While I think tengu and kodan lore is interesting and could be quite enjoyable to explore, I would be pretty happy to know that things like skritt and quaggan and all that won’t ever be more than NPCs.

Dwarves have basically been wiped out, and since ALL dwarves underwent the stoney transformation, there aren’t any hiding around in the world.
As for the asuran experiment super skritt, if an experiment were to happen, there would never be able to be so many skritt to warrant an entire capital city that would have the capabilities of the other capital cities.
In World of Warcraft the Blood Elves had a disability “magic addiction” and were forced to feed off of energy. However, as time went on they cured themselves. I would like to play a Skritt who must venture away from the colony in order to help save the world. Would be a very interesting story personally for me. It would also be a unique story that would not share so many similarities between the other races.
Each race has its own challenges to face.
I would make a Teng Ranger instantly.

Actually they didnt cure themselves, the sunwell was restored, feeding their addiction again to the point where its not an issue for the blood elves. the high elves even returned, since they didnt dive into their addiction like the blood elves did, but they returned to their magical sustenence. Now it could be assumed that the sunwell having holy and arcane energies that the holy part has the ability to cure addiction, but the bloodelves didnt go through the journey on their own.
Also, it would be odd for a skritt to choose which ‘lesser race’ to aid, considering the skritt is a lesser race itself.
Nothing in the game suggests skritt or largos are going to become playable races. Though it would be interesting to have an aquatic race that has a air breather and a different set of skills when it goes on land. Turn the game upside down.
Oh, when they do add the tengu I hope their personal stories are set AFTER zaihtan is dead so we don’t have to play out the same stories yet again.
One more edit: I hope they add a new profession at the same time they make tengu playable race.
(edited by Ramei.2715)
I would love to play as a Tengu! I think they would make an awesome player race.
meh well too soon for new character classes but am sure everyone is thinking the same ideas.
I think before they add new class they will add new weapons since that effectively is half of what a class is. Probably something like polearm/throwing weapons. Adding new usable weapons would be a great addition in this game and I would welcome it over new classes since they have a pretty tight grip on what they wanted for classes.
Would definitly love being a Tengu, also, Quaggans could possibly be a fun race to play as too! ^^ Now thinking about it, the Naga would be epic as well.

A new race will add a new city and all the level range zones 1-15, 15-25, etc. This can only be done though major expansion, most certainly a paid expansion.
To add a new race it has to bring new style to the game. Already some exiting races have been suggested: Tengus, Kodan, Largos.
What do these races bring to the game to make it different then what we already have?
- Tengus are a bird type of race which most certainly won’t fly. So how are they much different then Charrs or a Sylvaris? They pretty much resemble the raven form of the Norns
- Kodans are a bear race. Aren’t they similar to Norns?
- Largos are a winged race.
Although their design might not be very well thought, the principle is right. They are a floating/hovering/flying race. They will bring a new type of gameplay to the game both visually and mechanically
So for me, a race similar to Largos but with a better design is a better choice than Tengus or Kodans.
The Largos don’t fly. They swim and they ‘phase’. If you want a flying race that ‘phases’ and asssassinates from the shadows, there’s always the Mursaat.
plus, races are supposed to be mechanically equal. they have flavor skills on PvE, and they have different personal stories, but mechanically, they are all the same, and that’s how it should be.
