New weapon system
Perhaps, but it would require a lot of balancing. I’d prefer them making sure the content that’s in here now to work properly, add some PERMANENT content before doing things like that. I like the idea, but also see a few problems.

And for the balancing part, you’re right, but it has always been hard do balance a game. they’re not really bad at that, so they can show us some good things !
The solution to balancing is making every class overpowered lawl.
I like the idea of having more skills to choose from per weapon set. Plus you could unlock them by using the weapon even more. :P

Lol, Fantastic idea great! Great just Great! I allways wanted to swap out hundred blades with somthing better, and pistolwhip with somthing better (you can guess i hate root xD)
Great idea, this is something I’d like to see in GW2. I wasn’t too keen on the fact that each weapon only has one set of abilities, this update would allow a lot more customisation and people could change abilities to suit their play style. I really like to see alternative abilities for a necro staff as well as marks, so that there’s a little more freedom.
Yep it keeps coming up and I’ll keep posting in support of it each time.
More choice of #1-5 skills in the future would be great.

It’s a great idea and one that all of us GW Vets are already accustomed to. And think of the additional adversity Anet could take advantage of in future mob creation and especially boss creation.
More game depth and additional specialization, imagine if every warrior used a greatsword with completely different skill sets. Sounds like a game I once played, in fact in that game you could also have a second profession and use any weapon you wanted without profession limitations….but I guess that’s another story

I can see this being potentially problematic. One of the major downfalls of GW1 was the sheer number of skills that were in the game that constantly had to be balanced and refined. (Shadow Form :p).
I will however say that I like the general idea of your suggestion. Make it so that the original 1st skill chain stays the same (to cut down on skill count a little) and then make it so that the skills 2-5 can be replaced with 1 alt for each skill. This way if there is a particular skill on a weapon that you don’t use often you can swap it out for it’s alt if you prefer that skill.
I would also suggest that the current method of having the skills required to be unlock stay with the alts. Except make it so that you have to learn the original bar and then the alts take longer/have more in depth requirements for unlocks.
Definitely a fan of this idea overall. It would be great to be able to choose between more than just the current 5 skills per weapon, and on top of that to rearrange their position from 1-5 like you can utility skills. Maybe give each weapon ~8 skills in addition to your zero-cooldown auto-attack, of which you choose any 4 in any order?
Another way to add more variety skill-wise I think would be a flat-out Elite Skill overhaul. Sadly most of them, racial or otherwise, stink in my opinion. I’d love to see them make a wider selection of equally useful skills there. There’s also tons of major traits, mostly first tier, that deal with falling damage. Personally I don’t know a single person who ever uses those, so I’d be all for replacing those with new effects for each class

Yes I think that balancing this would be really difficult, and even more if you need to add 5 (or 4 as you suggest) skills per weapon AND per class.
And I know that it would be a lot of work.. but it’ll also add a lot of more diversity in the game.. I’d love to see 2 elementalists with differents gameplays..
And it may be even more useful in pvp.
About the idea of adding 4 skills instead of 5, that’s not a bad idea. If it can help Anet to see an interest here, it can be good.
And I love the idea of unlocking the alt skills independantly!
But they mustn’t be better than the others.. so we need a way to unlock them that is easy/fun. Like doing some quests or something else and no something too hard for just weapons skills.
About the elite skills and the utility skills bar, it’s different beacause we know that later on we’ll have a lot of more skills.
But about the weapons skills, we don’t know if it’ll be updated..

Believe it or not Arena Net is working on something like this. Or at least that was the last I heard. From what I understand, based on some discussion on Guild Cast about a few obscure developer quotes, modular weapon skills that can be unlocked and slotted on your bar is Arena Net’s current plan for post-eighty character progression.
If that’s the truth then it’s a really awesome news!
I will go slowly on it because I don’t think we’ll see it soon.. But I hope that it’s on their plans!
