Nicholas The Traveler

Mods would have prolly just moved your own thread anyway
I reckon they should make Ameranth the new Nic.
Also, randomise the item(s) each player needs to get.
That way, it should help ease single zones becoming saturated and should help the population spread more evenly. Obviously, you aren’t going to get a single item for each single player, but it should help spread the population out significantly enough to bring life to other zones.
Not sure I’d like random items per player. Again the reason the tradable items were great in GW1 is I could give em away to people who got to it late, give em to guildies, etc. I wouldn’t want to have everyone find something different.
Interesting NPC suggestion though. Definitely not opposed.
Since the items would still be tradable anyway, players could keep said items, either for the future, or to mail to people who need them. We do have /map chat, so there are bound to be people who are in chat asking for item x, y and z. It shouldn’t be too hard to compile a list of items she’s asking for (someone’s bound to do it) so we know what items to keep, and which ones to vendor.
And since you aren’t going to be getting a single item for a single player, there’s bound to be people who have the same item.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
Not sure I see it, Daibish. To me that just seems unorganized and unnecessary. Trophies, gifts, and items inside should be tradable – though I wouldn’t be opposed to some cool new tweaks to the system for GW2 and adding some cool Account-Bound stuff from the gifts as a rare drop (even more rare than say, the mini or the walking stick).
I’m heading to bed though – I look forward to continuing this discussion tomorrow =D

The more the game organizes everything for the player, the less the community has to interact and work things out together. This could be a tool for community-building as well as additional content.
Ahhh, I get what you mean. Sorry for the confusion.
I’m not saying that the actual item (as in, the loot) you need to scavenge should be Soulbound, or the rewards itself. Only the requirement
So say Jim needs Pourous Bones and Bob needs Fins. If Jim has some Fins, he can give them to Bob, and visa versa.

Hmm that could actually be interesting, but from a dev standpoint I wouldn’t want to randomize everyone’s pool of required trophies. Generally the area he’s in reflects a bit as to what trophy he is collecting. Why would he collect a trophy from an Ice Ele in Frostgorge when he’s standing down in Ebonhawke?
I think it made sense in GW 1 – set location (randomized) each week to collect trophies relevant to some extent of the area he’s located in.

+ 1 to this, I miss ol Nick and the Professor. While they are long gone and resting peacefully in Ebonhawke, his ideas live on. Bring in his successor!

~I could promise you the same…but it would be a lie…
I farmed Nicholas’s items for HOURS in presearing, and I loved that doing so let me work on several titles at once.
This would be an epic way to encourage people to explore. I wouldn’t be opposed to having one Nicholas-equivalent NPC for the starter zones (like presearing) and one for the more obscure mid/high level zones.
Being that this game relys heavily on lore and storylines the NPC we refer to as “Nick” would have to be a descendant or someone who was willing to pick up the torch and carry on once more in Nicks name. Continueing a weekly travel across tyria in memorry if his or her ansestors tradition. Even celebrating the aniversery of Nick the hero? And why not throw in a Yakkslapper Staff to boot.
+1 for Nicholas. I actually often joke in GW2 when I see a lot of people gathered in one place by typing “Why so many people here? Is Nicholas somewhere around?” in the chat
Though I would make things a bit more spicy in GW2 by making his successor move constantly over Tyria (even change maps) not just stand in one place. A five minute break every ten-twenty minutes after which he would continue his never ending travel. You know like the guild bounty targets do.

he does have a descendant in the game named Nick. You don’t get to meet him but you can talk to his friend who is gathering items for him.

Haha! That is awesome I’ve never seen that before! So who knows, maybe the wheels are already in motion to bring this sort of thing into GW2. And the previous comment about the zone chat asking if Nicholas is there, haha I love it =)

Has to be his great great great etc grandson then :P Think Nicolas is dead

Well yeah. I’ve visited the graves of Nicholas and Yakkington. Sad stuff. In the OP I even said “something similar” to Nicholas.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this? I’d love to see that little easter egg in fireheart rise turn into something more than just an easter egg.

+1 for Nick. Use the soulbound “trophy” materials from events, hearts, etc. to avoid weekly spikes in trading post item values
Imagine a use for porous bones!
And we’d need to buy more bag/bank slots for all “millions” of different pieces available.
I’d still like to see more on this subject =) again, if they made those trophies tradable and similar to how GW1 ones worked and just replicate the Nicholas system they had there, it’d be great!

Especially now that the living story updates are going to start being more geared towards permanent stuff, it’d be nice to have weekly stuff to do as well as daily and monthly achievements.
People are always complaining about zones on the map that are just empty all of the time. This would bring players back to these zones in order to acquire the trophies and find the NPC to turn them in.
Who doesn’t love Nicholas from GW1?
twitch.tv/mdogg2005
Yes, yes, yes – bring him back please, I miss him so. Nicholas ensured I had at least one task I could work on consistently every week, with a chance of getting something awesome I could either use or trade. I loved that scavenger hunt to bits.
I hope they bring this back. He was widely loved and getting those presents was great. They could put in all sorts of stuff. A temporary speed booster. Summoning stones for PvE use for when you could use a little help. Alcohol for the booze title. Magic find booster. Even a temporary PvE stats increaser. There are a bunch of stuff they could put in the presents.
I would love this. I miss Nick and Yakkington.
Perfect candidate right here:

He even has a yak friend that is hanging out with him (it has no name though)

A successor to Nicholas the Traveler would be a nice way to add new trivial items and/or unique weapon/armor skins, etc. that you could get from these gifts tradeable for all the grey, trophy junk items you get.
You could get, say 250 broken lockpicks, and get 5 gifts of the traveler for those with a chance of dropping minis, special weapons/armor, boosters, etc.
