Notification if friends come online and for friend requests

This was something I noticed as well. We also get no notifications if a guildmate logs in. Nothing feels more disconecting to play for hours and look up to see a guildmate run past you in town and neither of you noticed the other was online thanks to having no notifications.

I agree completely. I really hope GW2 will have notification when friend or guildmate is online, or even when someone is trying to message you. Without this, its so easy to miss out with friends. Not sure this is what we like to see happening in a MMO game.
In this aspect I find World of Warcraft is much better.

I agree. That’s something I miss from WoW too.
I miss not having this feature in game and would love to see it implemented.
It actually is in the game, however it is also linked to loot being named in your chat log as you grab it.

This – and on that note, the suggestion here should be to split them, so we can see online status notifications without our chatlog being decimated by loot text.

I believe GW had friend/guild login notifications, but it’s been a while so I could be misremembering. But yes, I would really like to see those implemented.
actually, currently the login notifications for friends is set up in “system messages.” these are the same messages that display loot, npc comments, etc ad nauseam. in other words, the one we turn OFF because our chat window becomes so VERY full.
i would LOVE to see the friend/guild notification separated. at the VERY least, we NEED guild member notification, IN guild chat, not in some secondary chat or collection of messages. but for friend messages? no reason that can’t be toggled on/off to show up in main, AT THE VERY LEAST.
I never used the friends list in Guild Wars. I never used the Guild roster in Guild Wars. I don’t bother with either in GW2.
When I come online, I say hello to my guildies in Guild Chat. When they come online, they say hello in Guild Chat. That’s about all I need.
The GW2 UI feels cluttered to me to begin with, certainly nowhere near the elegant sufficiency that the UI of Guild Wars has. The last thing I need in GW2 is more stuff popping up on my screen to distract me.
If you’re really that concerned, it takes what, half a second to hit the Y or G keys? Do something this simple for yourself. Asking that the game does something for you that’s really a simple as hitting a key seems kind of lazy.
Offline mode, however, that’d be real nice.

I agree, this is needed.
I was bewildered when I noticed that there is no such option, or at least no such option that is independant of the system message clutter. It’s such a simple and widely used common sense feature that frankly the absence of it seems just a little bit too lazy to me.
The addition of separate options to display contact logins, guildmate logins, contact logouts and guildmate logouts in the chatlog with an optional notification tone for each would be a solely positive and very desirable correction.

See the arrow pointing down, right beside your chat log word “Main” or whatever you decided to name the chat log? It’ll bring up a drop menu…and at the bottom enable “Game Messages”, that seemed to do it for me.
If you havent already changed your Chat Name…that drop menu also gives the option to do so at the top of it.
