On Death = No View of Battle
I really like this idea, and also gives a sense that you’re well.. dead. I’ve caught myself sitting there in death watching the battle until someone rez’s me instead of going to a waypoint, which is a terrible habit. This will help with that but also the feel of it.
Anyways.. rambling, you described it perfectly and in short to.
I agree with what the problem is, but I don’t think blanking out the screen is the solution. You need to have a comprehension of the situation your allies are in to ideally judge respawning in normal circumstances.
I was thinking maybe “force” the death-cam-rotation that is already in, just take out manual control. A top-down view limited the ability to gather intel. But I’m not sure I actually like that, that is still a reduced ability to observe your allies. If you’re allies are still locked in battle, but clearly successfully pushing, it may at times be best to be patient. Can’t judge that if you can’t watch the battle.
Perhaps a strong shader effect that heavily blurs things at a distance would help. But balancing distance and nullifying intel gathering sounds difficult.
A “third” kill state might be doable. When a player is defeated, make them not targetable by currently normal means so as to keep the flow of battle. Make an additional “kill” possible that takes a bit longer so as to only have reason for doing it once the battle is truly over.
