Option to "Turn off experience gain" for gathering/crafting, etc.

I know many of my friends and I do not like it that we gain experience when gathering or crafting.
We want our leveling experience to take as long as possible while only gaining EXP for completing questing and killing monsters.
As an example, we had a guild mate get over 9 levels just cooking…
I have no issues with people wanting to level up the way they want, but it would be nice to give players the options to ‘Turn Off’ experience gains when doing crafting, gathering, etc. For many of us, these gathering/crafting professions should only level up the skill in the profession, not the characters EXP or level for doing them.
Please consider this…otherwise we’re forced to wait to gather/craft till max level.
Thanks!

Why? What’s the point?

As the old saying goes “Age is just a number” applies as well for leveling in my opinion. Although I don’t see any harm in this feature I do personally think it would mess up your experience a bit. The xp received in the game was balanced to include crafting and gathering and I think you would find yourself never high enough level if you didn’t have that.
Luckily with the sidekick system even if you gain extra levels your brought down to a more challenging level when you continue to progress (for example you hit 20 then go to a 17/18 heart).

Exactly, what’s the point? You get down-leveled when you go into lower level areas. If you “want your leveling to take longer” simply hang around those areas for longer, or don’t upgrade your gear.
You already have full control over that.
If Arena Net were to add an option to disable experience from crafting, they would also have to add an option to disable experience from exploration, or to disable experience from killing, or to disable experience from events, or to disable experience from hearts, or to disable experience from reviving allies, or to disable experience from the personal stories, or… you get the idea.

Levels don’t go from 1 to 80. I know that’s a hard concept to get if you didn’t play the original Guild Wars. You keep on leveling after 80. You don’t gain any stats, but you do gain skill points for each level.
Those skill points are a currency. They are not just a mechanism to slowly gain utilities. They can be used to buy things, arguably very desirable things. You would be a fool to throw away a single point of experience on purpose if you intend to play this game for a while.
Stop trying to slow down your leveling. You can enjoy the low-level zones, your friend’s storyline quests, and the lower-level dungeons just as much at level 80 as you do at level 5. Leveling up helps somewhat, in that you gain traits and you gain new utilities, but those do not trivialize the low-level areas. If you want to be cowed by a low-level area, go say hello to the infamous fire elemental in Metrica. It burns the level 80 players to ash just as surely as it burns the level 10s.
Embrace your XP, revel in it. To throw it away is as fool-hearty as destroying gold or burning gems.

I’m sorry but this makes no sense.
You get downleveled according to the zone. You will never outlevel a friend.

But it is way to easy to level :P
It is almost impossible to maintain a crafting level to be in synch with your character level in order to make items for your own character without:
1. Lots of alts
2. Lost of coin
And I would love an option I could toggle to turn off all character experience, but that won’t happen :P

I came here to post the same request, only more so. I would love to see not only this option, but the option to tone down or even temporarily stop all experience gain so that we don’t level faster than we desire.
The main reason for this (at least my main reason for this) is to allow my characters to stay in a level range long enough to not only gain the rare mats needed to craft their next set of gear, but also have a little fun along the way. This is important for those of us who craft some or all of our own gear (I can spend the entire time between 30 and 35 just farming the 80+ rares I need to make the level 35 gear for one character — 6 armor, 4+ weapons); knowing I can’t afford to gain lots of XP from other sources, such as events makes the game a chore instead of fun.
Please note that the level down mechanism assumes that you are in gear appropriate to your level. Thus, if you want to craft your own stuff, you are forced to farm in level appropriate zones and can’t take advantage of the level down mechanism until level 80.
I realize that there may need to be some balancing done so that we can’t simply turn of XP and grind karma (assuming that is a problem); however, this will really make the game experience for some (many?) of us better.

I would love this. Did I not read somewhere that you get the best ratio of loot/gear when you are in a zone that is your true level? I am finding I am almost always higher level then the zone I am in. I don’t want to leave a zone until I finish it and I finish the story quest occurring in it. Because I am a fervent gatherer and crafter on all my alts, I want to kill everything I see on my way to wherever the next heart/event/vista/poi is so I can get the fine mats I need to level all my girls. I also have this obsession with making sure I complete the daily every day. All that killing, all the gathering, all the crafting, all the DE’s… and I’m levelling like crazy. I would love to be able to temporarily turn off experience gain once I get too high for the zone I’m doing so I don’t feel like I am getting ahead of myself. Or when I just want to farm mats, so I don’t end up greening out my story quest. I hate it when I finish a story or a heart and the loot is not as good as what I have because I’m too high levelled for the quest.
I get a kick out of the posts from people who are always under-leveled when they are “done” a zone. That is quite impossible with my play style!

As an anti-suggestion: if you add the option to have no exp from the gathering/crafting… also add an option: “Receive Exp from those who don;t need it”

Maybe we can have an XP exchange to sell excess XP, or not.
And yes, you do get the most level-appropriate drops when you are doing an area at the same level as the MOBs since their normal drops are around that level and you aren’t just getting the occasional drop for your true level.

I also came here to post a similar suggestion. I would like to see the option added to stop XP gain across the board; I don’t really see any reason for specific activities that grant XP to be singled out. On the one hand, I love the great variety of methods through which you can earn XP in the game. On the other, the leveling progression is so fast that it can be difficult, as others have pointed out, to stay within the levels of the zones you’re currently exploring.
Additionally, leveling in concert with another person becomes problematic when neither of you can do anything, such as craft or look for mats, without leveling.
Also, while I like the automatic down-leveling system, I absolutely do think that higher level characters trivialize quite a bit of the lower level content. Sure, there are outlier situations, and it’s still possible to be defeated as a higher level character in a low level zone or mission, but my experience so far has been that it doesn’t happen often, and the presence of the higher level character removes much of the challenge that the lower level characters would typically face.

Weird request OP… really weird but I support options for xp gaining. They could add it in from options menu and have check boxes for things you gain xp; reviving, harvesting, crafting, killing, events, wvw events, etc.
Although I love that sPvP is separate, I wish I could gain xp from there or exchange glory points for xp.
