Option to disable customizations in WvW
They have this covered already I think. Hit F11, 5th option down is Team Colors, change that to “Everyone”, I think that’ll do what you’re looking for.

Nope… You just get my ironic view and are making a suposition that I can´t see the options in this game.
Read the second paragraph. I´m talking about customizations not just some color changes.
I understood what you meant, and I honestly thought that setting would do what you were asking for. During my time in WvW it felt like the enemy was all displayed in generic armor, and I thought that came from the Team Colors settings, which since my own team members appeared normally was a seemingly logical conclusion. I just never tested setting it to everyone (as I just did) or I would have realized it was just changing colors. Sorry, was just trying to be helpful and didn’t log in to check before sticking my foot in my mouth.
Now that I know the setting doesn’t do this I agree we need one that does, would be helpful for a lot of people and might help with the culling (maybe).

All you have to do is uncheck the Enable Hi-res character textures on the graphics menu before going into WvW, it lowers the resolution on npc’s and other player characters, but requires a map change to go into effect. They already have a setting in place for those who need it.
Having generic armor and dyes would still tax the system, as it would STILL be rendering them at the hi-res if you have that checked, so you wouldn’t notice a difference, and I doubt the color of someones armor or the types of weapons you have taxes your video card all that much.
It still has to render them yes, but it seems like it would take less effort to render simple mail as opposed to something like CoF armor with it’s flame effects, and remember we aren’t just talking one or two people, but crowds of them. So even if it only saved 20% of the rendering effort, in a large crowd that adds up pretty fast.
Now, given, I don’t know how their system works so this is entirely speculation on my part; so maybe lowering the textures would be more beneficial, I dunno.

OP has a valid point. Packets in pre NGE SWG mass pvp were insane, given that no two people had the same customization and the wild array of stats possible by weapons stat customizations. I can recall dying and getting 4 minutes of combat spam lying in the cloner. I could kill people after I was dead with que’d packets depending on their connection.
50 people in pvp would take a server down. Yeah, time has progressed, but customization packets are a real issue.
The core issue isn’t individual comps or cards, but the pipeline. In the US at least, the internet infrastructure has not kept pace with bandwidth demand.
