Option to disable voices

It does have some terrible voice acting, but the story is just as bad. In this case I just don’t even play with sound and skip all cutscenes.

It is true. Voice acting is bad overall. But the thing that kills my experience is the lack of confident given to my character by voice acting. I want my character to tell everyone how friggin’ awesome he is and that he will never be downed. Not that he is defeated……………..but they just don’t know it yet….

Yea…the fact that all these MMO’s come out lately with so much voice acting is a bit of a mystery to me. As far as I know most of the people I play with and my RL friends that play MMO’s mostly listen to music while playing, or have TS/Vent/Mum open.
I’m sure there are exceptions out there, but my volume has been turned off since about level 7.
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.
I turned off the character voices at the start (dialogue volume to zero) and it improved the game tremendously. It means you don’t hear the repetitious phrases the NPCs say as well as the one billionth time your character says something like “I can outrun a centaur” but you still hear in game music.
No matter how awkward it was, I miss my “Silent Protagonist” from The Secret World . I miss you my mime!
I’m usually typing on my phone
I catch myself talking back to some of the repetitive stuff.
“This so called farmer just punched me in the face.”
Sometimes I actually say out loud, “So what?”
“Ha! Your kidding right!?”
Sometimes I say, “What the kitten do you think?”
:)
“You’ll never take ascalon HWOARRRR!”
The ascalon commander’s dubious attempt at a battlecry in the invasion fractal never ceases to crack me up

I want a option for muting voice acting. I do not ever want to hear my male Asura say: ‘’I am defeated, but you don’t know it yet.’’ ever again. Anyone else feel me? This must be the most frustrating experience I have ever had in any mmorpg within this franchise.
I’ve never heard my asura say “I am defeated…”. Ever. What it sounds to me is him saying “I’ve beaten you, but you don’t know it yet” and I find it hilarious, because it happens when I break combat.
I find some of the voice acting in the story to be meh. However, I find some of the things my character’s say to be quite funny. I particularly like my human engineer, after a particularly hard fight when he blurts out “that went better than I expected”, or my human necro when a minion dies saying “now I’ll have to make another one”.
I’ve talked to other people, in fact we’ve even had threads about how people like what their characters say.
Matter of taste, I suppose.
Yea, honestly, I can’t defend them on this. The voice acting is sorta like… well I expect someone to say “Help, I’ve fallen and can’t get up!” at any moment. It also another factor of why the storyline is not fun to play.
The worst is probably “I’m bleeding.” from a human which has no emotion whatsoever to it. Another bad one is the necromancer lamenting over the minion she just raised 2 minutes ago.
Asura and Charr can get away with bad acting because they’re funny, but everyone else…
I do like my female guardian’s overacting though…
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

I like the Charr and Asura dialogue though because I enjoy their humor.
I enjoy the little shouts :P
“I feel 6 feet tall!”

Listen closely. He does say that when hp reaches 20%-15% or something. I thought I heard wrong but he does actually say that.

There’s a difference between the bad voice acting in cutscenes, and the things your character says in combat. I’m not going to defend the voice acting quality of the cutscenes. They is what they is.
Now the stuff you yell during combat, that’s a whole ‘nother story. Those are GUI substitutes. When your character says, "I’m bleeding!" it’s because he’s bleeding. When he goes, “I feel 6 feet tall!”, (one of my favs) you just got might. It’s one of those things ANet did to keep you looking at gameplay and not UI. Of course, it’s not a complete substitute for glancing at your buffs and debuffs, but if you learn to use those cues, you’ll be staying focused on the action much more. Yeah, they get a little old, but they’re incredibly useful.
No sympathy for the Devil, keep that in mind.
Buy the ticket, take the ride.
I think most of the player dialogue is fine. There’s some things that grate like “I could outrun a centaur”, and I generally find the norn female voice repulsive, but it’s mostly fine. Plus there’s going to be some funny things in there if you pay attention.
I think the only dialogue I’d really consider bad in this game is in the story, which is strange because that’s where anet should have tried as hard as possible to make the dialogue believable, but some characters just sound dead (dishonourable mention to Deputy Mira during the battle of Claw Island, seriously, just youtube it it’s horrendously bad). Ambient dialogue is fine though, the random NPCs actually feel alive and believable, inflect tone and have a real personality which makes it a shame that the story wasn’t able to do that for a number of its characters.

“colesy’s on rampage today. Slaying casuals left, right and centre” – spoj
Nothing is worse (and I mean NOTHING) than the male sylvari’s,
“Entering combat!”
I really can’t stand some of the champs constantly screaming their rubbish out in some maps. Yes I’m talking to you Krait whatever in Caledon also in Fireheart rise I think. And theres another one on another map where it’s a Grawl hooting like a dang monkey, so annoying especially through my surround sound system…and the fact they repeat the same old thing every 30 seconds!
As for my character speech I pretty much don’t have any. I think it’s a sound card issue but if I play for example on my warrior and use any shouts he never says them or you can sort of hear it start but then glitch out. Other times it instead makes players around me who also get the buffs from my shout say what I should be saying, it’s odd….
“Protected!”
“This rose has thorns, here they are!”
“Insert rofl cry of pain when any norn or asura gets knocked down lol”

the only thing that annoys me is the female charr voice tbh.

Pretty sure you just heard it wrong.
i never want to hear a male human or a female sylvari ever say anything again

Voice acting in mmo’s is great to have..Also take a look at who has done some of those voices..Remember “Mass effect”…
Dam(*kitten) your eyes…..I’d like to know what the hell that even means!?
I do like voice acting in games and characters should say things tho i agree there is a bit of a weirdness going on like I’d never play a character that says “Why won’t anyone help me!” when getting low.
My Charr has some odd stuff he says often like sounding a bit too aroused when I gain Vigor while running. o.O

I would not even bother to defend my point if I heard otherwise.

Haha, I do this when my boyfriend is playing his asura elementalist and she shouts “air!” enthusiastically when attunement swapping. Almost every time I go “What about Eir?”.
I like chatty characters, because they are more lively for me. Ofcourse if it breaks the personality you made up for them it can be annoying for you. Some things are better than others ofcourse (human males can get on my nerves, but luckily I don’t play those). Sometimes it really helps with gameplay, when people outside your party say things like “help please”, you try to send a heal that way or look behind your back for downed players. Some builds are more chatty than others too and it can be real funny to find/hear a new line of text.
“I’ve beaten you, but you dont know it yet” is what I only hear.
I play an Asura Engi an he never said “I am defeated..”.
Do you play PvP? I could find only one reference to what you heared. Possibly misheared too or a PvP only line.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/audio/Automatic-Voices
There aresome who attempt to list those lines and your line isnt included:

I tend to say too that you’ve misheared just out of my own experience playing an Asura.
The voice acting is most awkward when it happens in a cut-scene where you’re standing no more than 4 feet from the person you’re talking to and no expressions are made no matter what the dialogue (example: human story of finding sister. she is apparently in really bad shape but doesnt look it. Also, she coughs about 3 times all while standing there completely still).
Also the voices are super amplified while the background sounds are muted for some reason, terrible audio mixing. I’ve tried messing with the levels myself but it doesnt seem to effect cut-scenes too much. I think the voice acting itself, could be worse and it’s mostly the corny dialogue that’s the issue. The voice actors worked with what they were given. An option to trade the cut-scenes with simple speech bubbles would be cool.

I thought he said “I’ve beaten you”, not “I’m defeated”.
Male asura PC is excellently voiced – one of the best in the game (I’m serious).
I like some of the voice acting, not all, but a good chunk probably. If the game didn’t have it….if it was all text all the time, I wouldn’t play. The voices add depth, and spunk for me.
“Oooo shiney!”
And make me laugh with some of their timing….
You can already disable combat voices, go to options > sound > dialogue: 0
But the problem is that also disables cutscene audio and event NPCs.
I wish they’d separate it, I don’t want to hear NPCs, their constant chatter gives me a headache and I don’t want to hear their useless drivel. But if I disable dialogue, I can’t hear combat voices. I NEED to hear combat voices, but right now I have them disabled because of the dumb NPCs. Please Anet, split combat voice and dialogue, I don’t want to hear dialogue but I need to hear combat voices.
