Option to swap #1-5 skill slot order
You could shortcut those keys to other numbers to suit your play. like make 3 your shortcut for the 2 skill and 2 the shortcut for the 3 skill…etc. I think switching it up would not make much of a difference in game play. For example, I don’t even use my 1-0 skills with numbers but I have them bound to keyboard keys that surround my “wasd” movement keys so I don’t have to move my hand across the key board to hit my elite. I know where you are coming from, but these are my reasonings against. I’m not shooting your idea down, just giving you some ideas.
Oh I have already remapped the entire thing, trying to find an optimum, efficient solution – shared between mouse and keyboard buttons.
Lets take a concrete example with the class I am most familiar with – mesmer:
OH pistol – phantasm is on #4
staff – phantasm on #3
OH sword – phantasm on #5
GS – phantasm on #4
Now ideally we should be able to remap those skills, for example:
OH pistol – change to #5
Staff – change to #5
GS – change to #5
This is one example.
Another one is take the Sw/Sw staff pairing
- phase retreat on #2
- iLeap on #3
Personally I would like both of these to be on the same button.
These are just two specific examples of one class, but the same goes for all classes.
hmm. So you want you skill buttons different for each weapon? Yea, i guess it could be troublesome. I play a thief mostly and I never do a weapon switch. I have my keys bound as follow:
e=5
c=6
v=7
r=8
x=9
q=0
The rest of the keys are still easy to reach so I don’t have any reasons to change them. Same thing with all my other classes. They are all so close together, I don’t have a need to shortcut my five skill to my toaster or my 3 skill to my cat. I just move my finger hardly at all and I hit the skill I need. Its an idea. I found this shortcut quite useful, you even might want to give it a try. You might like it. But back to the weapon skill selecting. I don’t know. It wouldn’t affect me so sure. XD
Don’t worry, my keybinding is incredibly compact – half of them are on the mouse.
It’s nothing to do with reaching keys, more to do with where you feel a particular skill should be – after a certain period of time you get a feel for whether a particular pattern of keypressing flows well or not.

Added screenshot to the OP as an example.
Such a system would also cater for there being more than 5 skills per weapon, if any more are added in the future.
