[POLL] Adding New Skills! Vendor [vs] Free [vs] Others
Skills should be captured by mobs: +1
Other thoughts:
I’d rather anything new they put in be hunted down.
IMO sticking everything in a vendor is the WORST thing they could’ve done.
I’d like for each zone to have multiple named champion mobs that wander around that you’d have to hunt down for skins (or new abilities). Log on one day, ask a couple guildies/friends to come hunt a mob in X zone. Would be fun.
Although this was kind of what skill points was supposed to accomplish, but more skill challenges aren’t challenging whatsoever, and are clearly marks on your map for you.
edit : sorry, stupid forums wasn’t letting me edit lol.

Other thoughts: I believe this would give us a lot of endgame, and would greatly benefit a large portion of the community. Also, for nostalgia as it was done similar to this in Guild Wars.
Ideas/Suggestions: Implement this!! Next patch.

I like this idea the best out of the ones presented, with vendor coming in a close second.
Skills should be captured by mobs: +1
I liked that idea from gw1.
Vendor could be interessing, but I’d rather signet of capture. :P
While I’m always for more change, Capping skills will only hurt the game.
Many of the trait lines already “change” some skills to add variety. (necro’s wells being ground targeted instead of placed around you", etc)
Adding more skills right now would just aggravate the balancing issues with the current setup.
I’d much rather have them work on new professions for an expansion and wait a year for it, or to add a “specialization” for your current toons.. say a “berserker warrior” with new skills that favor power over vitality, and once you learn this path you can’t learn the skills from a “Cheerleading warrior” (you know a lot of buffs via shouts and banners)
So uh, -1 on all and +1 on wait for an expansion.

More elite skills that have to be captured would be nice. Maybe from dungeon boss in story mode.

As much as I respect your opinions, please post them in a form like others have so I can easily keep track of a poll and this thread is easy to read for everyone. Thank you!

I loved that part of Guild Wars. And I loved then using the captured skills to make capturing other skills easier. It kind of starts to feel like a Mega-man game!
What is this topic about
Just kidding. +1 for vendor
Updated the poll.
I loved skill capture in GW1 and wish we could get more elites that way. The lack of skills and elites is my biggest concern with GW2 so far.
Captured +1 (would make it more interesting)
I would like to see new weapon skills added that we could switch out with existing ones (not sure if this topic is for weapons skills) as well as slot skills .

But I would love to capture skills that are superior to the ones that can be purchased via a vendor

[Skills should be captured by mobs argument]
Like in Guild Wars, we unlock a new skill called “Signet of Capture” to put anywhere in our skill bar. Upon the death of a specific mob, we can use the “Signet of Capture” to capture a new skill for our class.
Skill capturing will be great because it will add a needed diversity to the game. Don’t get me wrong, the game has plenty of diversity, but more wouldn’t hurt.

people should read the many blog posts addressing this issue and why this game is different from gw1 (which I played and loved)

Capture +1
The diversity in GW1 compared to GW2 is huge, being stuck with 5 skills because you want to use a certain weapon is limiting. At least a few more skills for each weapon would allow for more customization.

Other +1 Skills should be awarded for WvW/sPvP ranks.
Sorry but I disagree with most of those. The game needs skill variety badly. People should not have to grind for skills either, it should be enjoyable. Please view
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Improved-Combat-Skill-system/
Control F, search for “Sword Examples.”
[Free argument] The game needs a much larger variety of skills. 3-5 more per slot for each weapon. And about 30 more utility skills. All of these need to be included with the original hero creation.
and
[Other Argument] Skills should be obtained in a non-grindy, fun to play way.
Examples being:
Skill combos-
Shooting an arrow through fire – Burning Arrow
Doing a Shiverpeak jumping puzzle, unlocks a skill/chain at the end, not just a vita.
Completion of a storymode dungeon would award a related skill.

Bring back signet of capture please. It was an interesting mechanic. I find the current skill system quite pointless, everyone gets to have all skills anyway, and in the end skill points are useful for mystic forge items and not getting skills. At least with skill capturing we get an adventure to earn certain skills. And I am all for having many more skills than the meager amount currently available.

Other: I like the “gained from monsters” idea, but there should be as much or more variation to how this works as there is with skill point challenges now: some could require defeating a given champion, others a platform puzzle, other could be karma buys after conclusion of a high-level heart quest.
Because the skills should be situational rather than direct upgrades to existing elite skills, it shouldn’t be necessary to have a one-size-fits-all approach to how they are gained: you wouldn’t be kittening yourself if you couldn’t get through a hard platform run to unlock that new elite skill – you’d just be missing out on a bit of variety.

Other thoughts:
I think that once we’ve learned our standard weapon skills by killing a handful of monsters, we should be able to learn additional skills for that weapon by using it over a much longer period. Reward people for sticking with their favorite weapon, give them more variety when they might start getting bored with pressing the same buttons over and over. Add some much-needed skill progression to the game, so that you don’t have the same exact skills on your 1-5 buttons for the entire 1-80 leveling experience. There’s a TON of room for new content here.
Maybe give me the ability to use certain attacks with similar weapon types, like being able to use certain mace skills with a sword. It’s not like my necromancer is even USING her trident when attacking underwater, she’s just holding it in one hand while using the other to cast spells. Why can’t I use those skills with a spear instead?
While you’re at it, find creative ways to let all classes use all weapons. My mesmer can channel magic through a greatsword and look awesome doing it, why can’t my elementalist or necromancer do the same? Why can’t an elementalist have awesome bow skills involving elemental arrow attacks, or an engineer have bow attacks with exploding/acid arrows? What’s the reasoning for some classes being able to use a spear but not a trident or vice versa? They’re practically the same thing!
But not all skills would be learned over time — special skills (especially utility and elite skills) would be unlocked by completing certain challenges like champion boss events, dungeon exploration, jumping puzzles, and the like. Hey, you could even sell me alternate versions of a skill on the cash shop that are functionally identical to free ones but have different animations or particle effects, offering more opportunity for character customization.

Didn’t they say a long time ago that you could unlock skills an such stuff from various spots in the in game world? I know that they stepped back from it to mack if fair for everyone, but I would say it would be a nice touch if you could find some extra skills (maybe PvE and WvW only) in the world. Like the racial skills in Gw1 they could involve a quest chain ore something. I really would enjoy to find a random guy and orr talk to him and start an event chain that will lead me to a new skill at the end. This would also increase the reward for people following the quest line from the start in contrast to people that join at the last boss( to grab a chest or loot).
Other options could be that you can craft stuff and when you give it to certain NPC’s or lay it down/wear it at the right place something is triggered. E.g the triforge pendant needs to be brought to a weird looking sylvari with red hair . If you do so a Human boy with blond hair will show up they will fight over it and then you get chicken armour ^^
I am against the getting them from Mobs. The hole idea behind killing something to learn from it dead corps how a skill worked seems a bit off. Even more in a open world game like Gw2 where bosses despawn quite fast.
