People can’t use the N word or other highly offensive words yet Guild Wars 2 has no problem with players calling each other a kitten

I’ve played MMO’s for nearly half a decade, I’m used to hearing offensive language but when a company will permanently ban someone for selling their account yet not do a thing to someone who makes another (paid) player feel like a 3rd class citizen then I feel there’s a big problem with the company itself. The reason I even went through the beta and bought the game was because I wanted to get away from that high school style game play of constantly putting people down or if you aren’t putting someone down then you’re the one putting other people down.

I just want to get on my computer after the gym, strip to my undies, log on, play pvp, then log off… not get stressed out. If people felt that Arena.net would actually follow their very own TOS then perhaps fewer people would feel inclined to use highly offensive words – especially in this country during these times.

Report those players? That’s all I can really think of due to different areas customs. Isn’t a kitten in england a cigeret? Thus they cannot auto ban or suspend accounts. Just report the players using offensive language and A-net will look into their chat history.

In fact the word was never offensive, our warped culture suddenly and strangely adopted it to be an offensive term. It has multiple meanings, a bundle of sticks, a cigarette, a unit of measurement used to measure bundles of sticks, ******ing (starred out for the sake of getting my point across) relates to metalworking and knitting, etc. It’s only an offensive term because people see it as such, but in reality it really isn’t. Annoy the person who called you that and laugh at them while you ask why they called you a pile of sticks and if that was supposed to be an insult. I guarantee if they even respond it won’t be anything logical.

Report the people saying it; the game police can’t catch everyone breaking the rules and the reason alot of people get kicked for cussing is because alot of other people are sending in complaints. Take some screen shots and send them via the in game reporting tool – same thing you use for reportin’ bugs if I remember right – and let them know how offended you are. Anet has a pretty aggressive, no tolerance, policy for this sort of thing but they can’t do squat if no one reports it.

I may be looking too deep into this, but I’d say that’s the opposite of what you should do. As I said, prior to recently said word was never intended to be offensive, if people stop treating it as such, people will stop using it as such. Language is a powerful thing, but it all depends on how it’s interpreted.

Actually it depends on how it is used; obviously the person didn’t mean a smoke or sticks or a cubit, they meant to be insulting. Many of the curse words and insults we use these days had very different meanings once upon a time – but that doesn’t make them any less insulting here and now. Language isn’t a static thing, it doesn’t have one meaning and then keep it for all time – it changes, its meanings and implications change – language is changed by the people who use it and the reasons they do. You can’t say, “people shouldn’t get upset for being insulted because …” An insult, especially one steeped deep in bigotry, is an insult no matter how you slice it.

I don’t see a problem with the word, if someone calls a hard boss that wipes them for a fifth time a kitten, or a kitten, or even a stupid kitten, but once you start calling other people names, that’s just wrong.

That’s what the report button is for. People usually don’t like to be called cigarettes. They’re dangerous and addictive.

If the sexual insult “ kitten #8221; is a problem for you … move to EU servers. People here are far less bigoted. Gay people are an everyday fact. As such, meaningless terms like “ kitten #8221; and “kitten” don’t get thrown around nearly as often.
