As the title says, often in the heat of battle you get focused on surviving and/or dealing damage (especially as a thief, or other class being played glass cannon). It would be cool if we could have some kind of audio indicator that a teammate is downed, to pull our attention to the party UI. I feel this really goes with the design philosophy of having players watch the action, not the UI. Of course it would be toggle-able but this mechanic worked very well in Left 4 Dead, even if it was the character shouting “I need some help here” much like the NPCs do in dungeons.

I second that. We already have a sound to tell when the Dodge bar is half full, this would be welcome, especially if optional.

There’s already a big honking icon on the mini map and above the player when they’re downed.

I have never had a problem with noticing that an ally needs to be revived.

I’m always glancing at the party UI, and it does not take away from my performance against the enemy.
It’s very easy to notice when someone’s about to be downed and when they are downed because their hp-bar turns red.

And I know it isn’t just me.

I’ve met loads of people who dive in immediately to revive me back up (and I try to do the same).

I’ve also noticed people who won’t kneel down to revive if the run depended on it. These people have their reasons for not reviving me (be it apathy or strategic). And sound tones won’t change their minds.

Adapt to it, or find a group to run with.

A sound tone for being ‘Down’ isn’t going to help other players coordinate better if they think NOT reviving you is the better way to play

I personally take a little of both.

If I see someone hold their own for a while and go down, I’ll jump in and revive them immediately.

If I see someone get downed repeatedly, after a while – I’ll just start ignoring them because reviving them will put me at risk of being downed too and they’re probably not going to stay up long enough for that risk to be worth it.

yes, accuse everyone of being bad players! that’s the solution. it’s not like the fight ever gets chaotic or on a scale large enough to make it hard to spot downed players. i mean, asking for an optional sound cue is almost like asking for a nerf!

EDIT: seems like you had the common sense of removing the “for all we know the OP is just bad at the game”, but my point stands. it’s an optional, helpful feature that would do wonders to warn others when someone is downed during a chaotic battle.

I would like a more visiable visual cue. In WvW or even events that get zerged I’m not in a group and cant see their HP bar. I’m not looking at my mini map In WvW or PVE since it really doesnt help with my survival. Yet that tiny down icon is easy to lose when you have massive amount of effects being spammed around.

We can, but an extra cue would be welcome, much as you can see the dodge bar right in the center of the screen and yet there’s an audio cue for when it is full.

This was just a request for an added feature that makes it so you don’t HAVE to look over there when things get hectic. If you think about it a great deal of audio ques are used already in game, your character shouts out which buff/debuff they have on themselves, warriors shout that they will soon have full adrenaline, etc. I feel it goes along with Anet’s design philosophy.

Not only does this give you immediate information that your teammate is downed, rather than you having to religiously glance at the party UI, but it also adds some immersion if your teammate shouts that they need help.

I didn’t realize this suggestion would meet such hostility, I just happened to notice running CoE last night with my guild that such a feature could be really helpful.

I am curious (please don’t take this as sarcasm) what is the line of thinking folks are having that makes them oppose the idea? Do you feel it makes PvP too easy? Or are you more frustrated with unsatisfied players constantly requesting more and more from Anet?

Thanks for clarifying!

I think the more interesting thing this thread has bought up is there is an audio hint for the dodge bar! How have I never noticed that?

As you can tell I do not note audio clues and prefer visual, of which I feel there are currently plenty. However, I am not one to think that only things that suit my personal preferances should be included in the game like some of the above so why not include it.

The giant symbol over the player isn’t enough? It’s even marked on your map and if you’re in vent someone will say they need rezzed. I see no problem here.

I do not know how many people have played a game series called ‘Gears of War’ but it was a teamwork based game where when a partner became ‘downed’ there character would have usually made a request such as ‘Revive me!’…a simple sound cue would probably be just fine but I would love if they made the sound more like what this series did instead.

But there you are assuming that people (now don’t get me wrong because I do use vent with my guild) are using a 3rd party program, shouldn’t we use just GW2 as the baseline? I agree that the large overhead symbol is quite helpful, but someone who is in melee could have their back turned to a companion who goes down, then you would not see them. Or, as many have noticed this game has a great deal of particle effects, which in a large room with a big boss and several smaller baddies, and a team of 5 all throwing around particle effects that symbol can be lost in the crowd.

So what you are saying is that you are using an audio cue, given to you by your guild members over vent and at the same time being negative towards an idea that wishes to implement an audio cue played by the game?

I didn’t accuse everyone of being bad players.

I’m saying some players think differently, and sound-tones won’t change that. GET OVER IT.

If a player doesn’t revive you, it’s not because they didn’t notice. They either couldn’t reach you, it wasn’t worth the risk, or just think they have something better to do.

This is a trivial feature that isn’t worth pursuing. ANet has better things to work on. :P

And since you brought it up, yes the OP could still be a bad player. I forgot to add it back in while editing.
And you cannot prove otherwise, even video would be circumstantial evidence

i’m not trying to prove that other people couldn’t rezz me because they didn’t notice. i’m at fault too. many times during dungeons, the battle gets too chaotic and it becomes impossible to think “OH I SHOULD CHECK MY MAP OR MY PARTY UI, maybe someone needs help, nevermind the horde trying to turn me into pasta”. and the rezz icon has two issues: first you need to be facing the player that needs rezzing, and that’s rarely the case during a dungeon; second the image has to be clear enough for the icon to not blend in with the background or the effects (blue icon on blue background) and the screen has to be clear enough for me to spot it.

guild wars 2 has a very, very busy combat, that demands a lot of your attention. the less you’re required to look away from the combat, the better. this suggestion issues exactly that need to look away from the combat to help downed players.

If you, as a player, find certain combat scenarios too hectic to still pay attention to the party UI, then ‘you’ as a player, will not benefit from the additional tone
BECAUSE whatever is holding your attention will continue to hold your attention, despite you realizing someone needs help.

OR, You will die for ignoring it.

Example: A silver/gold tier mob that’s aggro’d to you, and will kill you before you can even kneel to start the revive process. (Very common in dungeons)

Your response only proves my point further.

If a player doesn’t revive you, it’s not because they didn’t notice. They either couldn’t reach you, it wasn’t worth the risk, or just think they have something better to do.

-Couldn’t reach you
-It wasn’t worth the risk
-Think they have something better to do

‘Fighting off a horde of mobs that cannot be ignored’ counts for all three of those points.

They either:
A) Tried to res you, but went down themselves OR wanted to res you, but couldn’t find a chance to do so
B) Think the mob on top you will kill them too, so they don’t bother
or,
C) Are busy fighting off a hellish mob biting at their delicates

A sound tone cannot fix any of those scenarios. (And that’s excluding the noobs who just don’t care)
This thread suggestion is only seemingly useful. Put into perspective, it’s bupkis.

The newbies who a sound tone / audio feedback would help, already learn quick.
They don’t need the extra feature, they’re already learning the do’s and don’t’s at their own pace.

That’s why this suggestion is a waste of time.

The argument for this feature, ‘that the game’s combat is hectic and needs more feedback features’, is an invalid one.

Boiled down, you’re saying:

“The combat is too hectic for people to work together, so let’s make it 1% more hectic and see if that helps.”

“Bleeding, Poison, Confusion, Torment, they all look delightful on you.”

DreamOfACure I think it would be a useful addition as some people respond better to audio clues then visuals. Yes it is hectic but I keep an eye out for my visual clues, my prefered method as stated previously, while others would prefer to keep an ear open for the audio hint.

There will always be times when knowing someone is down doesn’t mean you are actually going to be able to help them at all, but I would still think it is better to know however you prefer to find out.

I forget the terms, but i’d like to have this tone thing, not for “Defeated” players, but for “Downed” players. The Downed players still have a chance of getting back on their feet on their own, or if a monster (just talking pve here) dies they rally. A tone would be useful in this situation because simply drawing monsters’ attention away from the Downed player can save them.

Other than that, yes, this isn’t going to do much good, sadly.

I’ve found that I can hear my character shouting for help, but it’s not broadcast. “I need a little help, here!” doesn’t do much good if I’m the only one hearing it — I sort of already know I need help.

To me all the little sound bites are a lot of fun. I’m not at all tired of outrunning centaurs. I wouldn’t mind a few more, especially if they help me spot the need to find my downed comrade.
