Playable Race: Tengu
As cool as it would be to Play a Tengu the problem you come across is that they are pretty much xenophobic isolationists in GW2 and rarely leave the walls of their city .
It’s almost certainly going to happen. Shou in Caledon Forest comments to a fellow Coromi Scout about a Asura Gate gate being built that connects Lion’s Arch to their capital in the Dominion of the Winds. The Coromi Scouts in Lion’s Arch often comment on the destroyers becoming a problem in their realm (Primordius), and how they are still waiting to decide whether to join the other races (with all the times humans have screwed them over I don’t blame them).
While I can’t find the source off the top of my head, I believe it was written somewhere that they were intended to be the 6th race for launch, but focus was later directed to the launch five. Also the Dominion of the Winds dumps out into both Kessex Hills and the Asura second adventuring zone, seems to point to them coming soon enough.

It was mentioned in the “Making of” book contained with the Collector’s Edition.

No. They are just distrukittenl.
There’s Tengu in all 3 orders, and their leader and counselors or elders or whatever they have are delivering how are they going to deal with the dragon situation.
All you have to do is make it so they decide to ally with the other races after they get reports from all Tengu that left the city, and a group of dissidents decide to split from them, still not trusting other races.
And there you are, the setting is created so you can have them as a playable race.
Anet had set them up to be a playbale race in the future, it’s so obvious and I hope it’s true.
They will probably when they eventually release the Cantha Exspansion/ add on
Yah I figured the Tengu would be a new playable race. Its easy enough to tell that their current model is place holder.

They aren’t xenophobic. http://i.imgur.com/5YEIFh.jpg They just want to protect themselves. http://i.imgur.com/AR7v0h.jpg And soon, they will need someone to help them protect their home. http://i.imgur.com/dR4RNh.jpg As the dragons haven’t quite started their attack on the wall yet and already they are having problems. http://i.imgur.com/LEFSTh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/7XBgGh.jpg
I’m pretty sure they will be if they explore the world of Cantha in an expansion.
Kodan would be awesome to. Polar bears to panda bears lol.
Seriously though…Tengu and Kodan would make for some awesome playable races but I am more for Kodan just because they are so awesome and have the best voice acting Ive heard so far.
Does the same really need a birdman race that is almost inevitably going to end up packaged as a wrong-headed, misguided mockery of Japanese culture? I think everyone can just recognize that anything that is going to be designed as “culturally Japanese” is going to inevitably focus on how Japanese people are “different” from “normal” and “not quite the same as real humans”.
I can already hear the heavily mockingly accented voices using r’s as l’s and talking about “honor” in every sentences and calling everyone and everything as “honorable ______”. They’ll inevitable have “katanas” which will be clearly defined as something different (and possibly superior) to “swords” and their thieves will be “ninja” who live be “ninja code” with “ninja honor” and their fighters will be “samurai” who kill themselves the moment they fail at anything… ever.
The world just doesn’t need any more of that sort of garbage as much as western Japanaphiles may lust and call for it.
But, maybe I am wrong. Maybe that was never part of the plan. Or maybe someone just needs to point out just how painfully misinformed these common ideas are when the west hijacks and utilizes Japanese culture as window-dressing and once it is pointed out, those things can be avoided.
Virtually always when American or European designers decide to create something fictional “inspired” by culture X or culture Y, the result is virtually always distasteful.

Or maybe people want to be Birdmen so they can be… Birdmen? And not give a kitten what kind of culture they may mimic?
Game content that could be enjoyed by tens of thousands of people should not be held back because a few decide to make issues out of non-issues.
And to be honest no other Mmo has ever released a avian race as a PC. I’d still say give them PC status!
