Please bring henchmen and heroes back.
Never going to happen. For starters henchmen were present in GW1 from the beginning, they aren’t in GW2.
This is true, but Heroes were not present at the beginning; they were added later.
Ugh, no. They frustrated the kitten out of me in GW1. They could never come close to a decent human player, and you had to babysit them far too much.
I understand what you’re saying, but the NPC’s we’re saddled with during our personal story are exponentially worse. Not only can they not come close to a decent human player, they can barely approximate the skill level of my cat if I were to sit her down at my computer and sprinkle catnip on my keyboard.
I’d rather have to do a little babysitting of henchmen than constantly have to rez useless cannon fodder.
Exactly, the story NPCs are atrocious. Now imagine them in a dungeon.
There’s a lot more going on in GW2 battlefields than in GW1. In GW1 NPCs could get away with ability spams, and sometimes there were some parameters that required a skill at a certain moment.
Now imagine NPCs needing to dodge at a very specific time, or needing to move to certain areas, or having to not use some skills at certain times, or doing an action at a very specific moment. What about some dungeon areas where there are some precision work that needs to be done, or where a very specific strategy works more effectively and now you need your henchman to do exactly what you want at exactly the right moments while focusing on what you’re doing yourself. The dungeons will need to be drastically redesigned to accommodate them, and frankly you’ll loose some of the interesting parts in the dungeons because of it.
I would love to see that return. That concept is part of what gave GW1 so much replay value to me… That and the gear plateau.
Anet took our gear plateau. Make up for it with giving us back henchmen and heroes, ESPECIALLY the player made heroes, which to me was the single best idea I saw implemented in GW1. I wouldn’t be able to stop singing this game’s praises if I could have a player made henchman/sidekick running around with me in game.
Unlikely to happen, though, since WoW didn’t do it. Seems to be the direction the game is headed in. But I can dream that this game is actually a Guild Wars series sequel for now.
Please don’t, they’re not needed.
Please don’t, they’re not needed.
Because so many people are running around Orr, doing temples, completing story mode on old dungeons, and hanging around lower level zones to do champion events.
…
Oh wait…

Ugh, I certainly wasn’t proposing that. My point was that the GW1 Heroes and Henchies were MUCH better than the GW2 Story NPCs. By far.

I don’t find that to be any different than the story missions of GW1 which also required specific strategies (and sometimes even specific skills) to be successfully completed. And yes, sometimes it was difficult to get your Heroes and Henchies to do what you needed them to do at a specific time and place. Sometimes it was more productive to wait until you could find other, real people to group with to complete the mission.
But I don’t think the dungeons should be redesigned to accommodate Heroes and Henchies. If they added them to the game, people should expect that it’s not going to be as easy as it would be with real people.

Have you considered the ramifications of adding this feature to this game? Can you imagine everyone running around with their own party of henchman? The game is already a cakewalk, no thanks.

I disagree. I love the idea of heroes and henchmen, but I also understand why, in GW1, they made some content too difficult to complete with henchmen only. It would be no different here. Henchmen would open up a lot more content for people unfortunate enough to want to be enjoying anything other than fractal farming, but wouldn’t alleviate the need to run with real people. Some content would simply require that.
I hated heroes and henchies in GW1. Especially heroes. Turned the MMO part of the game into single player and drove me away from GW1 PvE. Would hate to see them in GW2.
Guild Wars 1 was in fact never an MMO, wasn’t designed to be an MMO, wasn’t advertised as an MMO, the Developers didn’t even call it an MMO.
TLDR: Guild Wars 1 is not an MMO.
And in general you can actually play the story modes of the dungeons (and also watch the story, as most players who want to help you usually force you to skip the story parts, because they cost time….
that option gets my vote. something for everyone.
This doesn’t help folks who need to run dungeons for legendary components, though.

Limited to dungeons, since it’s the only PvE that forces someone to group with a limited number of people.

I would love to have the option to pick heros for dungeons only.
I hate grouping with pugs simply because,if things go wrong they look to blame someone within the group, then kick them,or they just quit.
or they just want to rush the dungeon,i’v not seen any of the movies yet, because they more or less say watch movie kicked.
Also the low lvl dungeons ect ect,no one ever does them nowadays, there all for la dungeon mostly.
So heros would help ppl there as well.

Uh, for those against Heroes and Henchies…
What would you suggest for players wanting to do story mode dungeons in a few months?
(Arah is required to “complete” the game)
I know ArenaNet’s “I created the fractals” Robert has stated that he’s been tasked with making dungeons more rewarding… But still, they’re going to release more content (and an expansion at some point, hopefully).
As a mesmer I wouldn’t mind this either, I have enough trouble keeping up with ppl and getting picked off from behind since I’m the slowest of the slow
100% agree
I would love either hero/henchmen OR scale-able dungeons from 1 to 5.
Yes, I know it’s an MMO…I’m not saying remove groups – give people options on how THEY like to play.
No support. I already hated heroes and henchmen in GW1. They made it much harder to find real players to play with.
Heros and henchmen were smarter than your average player lol (at least mine were since i controlled each skill and build they used XD)
That said 4k hours in GW1 i max’d all achievements with my heros at my own pace and with little frustration due to noobs/dc/jerks ect. ect.
Ill gladly fully support the use of heros and henchmen again.
The LFG LFG LFG spamm is getting very old.
Agree, with a command system.
Henchmen could from the storyline.
Strongly disagree with this concept.
You lot are already complaining about how lonely the world feels and how separated everyone is by dungeon difficulty levels and story mode vs explore mode. This can only make this problem WORSE.
Instead of entertaining this idea at all, put more effort into giving people a reason to be out in the world to meet up with others. more reason to run those dungeons with others. and reason to join in the random events and support each other.
Personal Bots are not the answer.

Story mode should have the option to play with bots.
Explore mode needs a dungeon finder.

There has been news on these forums that they are working on an internal dungeon finding system. One of Roberts posts, couple of weeks ago.
Story mode will likely have changes with this ‘dungeons overhaul’ that keeps getting spoken of. What their final idea will be, I dunno.
For the purposes of story mode, I suppose that would be satisfactory, as personal story isn’t much different. Mayhaps a scaling ability when additional party members tag along.
For out in the world, or exp mode dungeons, I just cannot agree to a bot system. They need to promote working together in an mmo, not embrace being alone.

The day they bring back them STUPID AI bots is the day I sign out again. Total waste of gameplay. I prefer REAL people, not stupid NPC’s I have to gear up and drag around.

Well considering we don’t have real players to play with either, and you don’t want “stupid NPCs”, I guess we’ll just all AFK in towns for a while. :-\
Unlike all you whiners, I do dungeons a lot with very good non jerk people. Its mostly AC and CM atm (as that is what has the easier to get exotics and the right stats for my toons) If you want I can start the other dungeons with you (story or EXP) guys that feel hurt and left out and I’ll be happy to take you along for other things in the game.
Only issue with me is that I just have a crap laptop full of lag and slow loads. So there has to be a bit of patience team work carrying of others through in. Yet I only care about helping others and being helped.
H&H will just make the population even less friendly. So its a no in that respect.
No, Heros literally destroyed gw1, you can farm legendary survivor afk, as well as steamroll ANY area (including HM) with the heros. None of you have any idea what you’re talking about if you think that players performed better than the hero AI, there was a reason they restricted them in HA, because it was more effective to have a mesmer AI than a real person, they were perfect in timing, 100% of the time. There is no requirement to run dungeons, and if you cannot schedule your playing time around the 4 other people you will be playing with, then you simply shouldn’t do it. There is a guild feature for a reason, if you can’t or don’t want to join a guild group, or a group of irl friends, then that’s your problem.
The 3 mesmer hero build literally farms HM UW and FoW with little to zero effort from the player, playing ANY class.

Every one should know by now that joining PuGs is subjecting yourself to abuse.

when i first started to play this game i wanted stuff from gw back to.
Now that i am getting to grips with the differences, i must say i like
it the way it is.
I think heroes and henchies in the open world wouldnt work,
But for dungeons they might.
Havent done any dungeons yet since im only a lowly lvl 20.
Concerning people who rage quit, they take this game to serious.
Try to find a group of nice people to play with.
I’m in a guild with former gw1 friends, and we all play for fun.
concerning being able to get armor/weapons i dont realy worry about that.
Its not like you need special stuff to play. Im doing fine with what i found so far.

Fine, suit yourself.
Heroes took the cooperative out of CRPG, basically turning it into a single player game with a few multiplayer options if you were lucky enough to have a nice guild. And if I want that, I’ll play Diablo or Skyrim.
Better?
My point still stands, no matter what label you put on the game.
H&H reminds me of C+SPACE + ALT + TAB. So no thanks.
And it would be quite hilarious if dungeons scaled, I can already solo Arah p2.
I know my situation is bit different when I have friendlist full of people to play with and can go afk during runs if necessary (depends bit of course). Turning this to GW1 PvE would just kill it for me.
I’d also like to see a return of the henchman albeit in a different way to you, I’d like to see players able to call up a henchman in lower level areas in order to clear content that would otherwise be impossible to do solo and I would also like to see the personal story evolve into something more like the missions in GW1 with fail criteria attached and players having henchmen and heroes along which could be replaced by other real players as necessary.
However, I don’t want to see them in dungeons, WvW, or sPvP.
No.
If anything, this game needs more opportunities to play with other players.
A PvX guild for mature players with a life.
I disagree. Heroes and henchmens have to no place with current system.
In GW 1 player had all maps and instances for yourself, now it’s global and we run with other players.
Nope, NPC teammates would be useless. Completly.
And easly abused by players. Very easly.
No.

My thoughts exactly! There should be more opportunities for players to work together. DEs, combos, and dungeons are a good start, but we need more of them and there should be more content down the line that helps players to work together.
What a lot of people don’t seem to understand is, GW1 was not an MMO. ANet had made this fact very clear from the start, it was coined a competitive online RPG, not an MMO, NEVER an MMO.
What the H&H supporters also don’t seem to understand is, GW1 was completely instanced, while GW2 has a large open world. Now they’d like everyone to be running around with a group of NPCs at their back, appearing no different from a group of bots. This will make DE scaling go haywire.
Well, the H&H supporters can keep on asking, but ANet will never budge. GW2 is an MMO, a game where players are meant to group up, not hire a bunch of NPCs for help. GW2 doesn’t need H&H, it needs a good LFG tool.
