Hi,
TL;DR:
What do you say if Tyria was filled with places, characters, items, even sounds with only one purpose – to enrich lore, story, to tell about past, to narrate of your actions. Would anyone want it (to enter cave, to fight monsters there not to fight one chest with one green item in it but with a ghost who would tell a lot about what once was there, about his life, his people, past battles, victories and defeats)?
Longer version:
(minor spoiler warning about personal story) I am currently going through my second personal story – where we liberate Claw Island. I play Charr.
(end of spoiler) Anyone can say what he want about Trahearne but this single NPC in 2 or 3 missions provided me more info about Tyria and Orr than any other… thing (npc, quest (quest line), etc.).
In my opinion GW2 narrates too little of the story and tells almost nothing about history.
On top of that we got situations like – Trahearne says: We need to consult Pale tree. My character: Ok.
My first impression was – WTF is Pale tree. How can my Charr just agree to this supposedly knowing nothing about this new young race?
After our arrival at the Groove I was glad that it was possible to ask the Avatar what she is. Explanation, to say the least, wasn’t safisfactory (one short sentence).
Other situation – I was looking for last POI on one map when I’ve arrived at the entrance to big cave (been there with my other character). I’ve remembered that there was vet inside and chest but also many spiders along the way. It wasn’t enough for me to enter there.
Don’t get me wrong – I love GW2, I love the world, music, races, battles (even TPvP ) but there are almost no interesting conversations or anything that would tell me a little about the place I visit or defend or scavenge. No history, no past, no storytelling, only very shallow (IMO) personal story.
I’m sure that this topic was beaten to death many times, however the clou of this topic is:
I’d like to know more about Tyria and I’d like to know it by playing GW2. I don’t need to have books written in game but some snippets.
Btw, if ascalonian ghosts (or were they separatists? :P) are building huge wall and Charr are want it destroyed, I’d like to know why it is being made, who gave order, if humans were to complete it, what would it mean. Now we have this half-made gigantic wall on Charr territory and few leggionaries who fire at it with their cannons. Great!
