Profanity Filter — Specifies the amount of profanity to filter in chat and other communications.

I was recently suspended for using “inappropriate language”. Please read my message sent to support below.

Hi, I was recently trying to log into my Guild Wars 2 account but received a temporary suspension for “inappropriate language”. After reviewing the rules of conduct I have discovered that the reasons in which I have been suspended are justified, yet the guidelines are contradicted withing the game itself. I pose this problem to the support staff. When initially starting the game, I had selected a setting so that inappropriate language would NOT be filtered. Now, whenever I have happened to use inappropriate language we can acknowledge that because of this setting, only people who willingly choose to see the language will in fact see it. Given that most people do not read the rules of conduct before playing a game, having an option to not filter profanity makes it seem very clear that profanity is allowed and readily available, so far as the user has decided they can be mature enough to handle it. Now knowing that foul language is NOT allowed in the game, I fail to see why there should be an option to show it. This is misleading and my suspension due to profanity seems misguided. I hope to be able to log back into my account ASAP so I can inform my peers that profanity does not fly in Tyria.

Thank you for your consideration in the matter,
Mac

A willingness to read foul language does not necessarily mean you’re willing to accept it being directed at you or anyone else in a hostile or aggressive manner. I leave the profanity filter off personally, but if somebody is using derogatory terms towards myself or another person with obvious intent to upset or hurt them, you can be sure I’ll be reporting them.

But why leave the option to read foul language if ALL foul language is banned? Absolutely makes zero sense. That’s like giving little kids bags of candy just to tell them they can’t eat it.

oh boy this old argument. MY choice of filter on/off does not give YOU the right to swear or not to swear. You agreed not to swear when you agreed to the ToS/CoC. You broke the rules, YOU pay the price.

Ever hear the old saying ‘If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?’ Of course it does. Whether anyone can read your swear or not is irrelevant, you still swore.

well it depends, i don’t mind some dirty talking, so i set my profanity filter off, what i do mind though is if a person use a word to offend me or my friends or just try to make me feel bad or outside of place in the community.
at that point if my profanity shows “kitten” or a swear word the result is the same.
i say this just to point the fact, are you sure it was just profanity per se and not a verbal abuse vs another player?

the reason for ban was “inappropriate language”

I’m with Zaxares on this… however I see what your getting at Mantis.

Though you really do have to ask your self, did you at any point in the last few months get frustrated at someone and start harassing them directly with foul language, or say anything that could be construed as harassing another directly with foul language.

People often swear openly in chat when frustrated and most of the time it is ignored, but the moment something is said that could be read as directed at someone else, that’s when the reports start flying.

Please stop assuming I’m a guy… I am female.

Catisa, I don’t think he is argueing he does not deserve punishment. He did break the rules. He’s simply asking why anet provides the option and penalizes you for it.

also ps. YOUR choice to filter swearing by defination means you will not see my swearing. If you are not effected by my swearing, then what does it matter.

Swearing is language, and unless it’s directed at people-WHICH IS WHERE PEOPLE SHOULD BE BANNED. Then it’s words. Like saying “Ohh Kitten, we failed”. We should not be perma-banded for typeing a cussword that is in no way offensive to anyone.

If your so offended by such words, its your Duty to censor the words from your chat via the option. Don’t have a kitten cow when someone says Kitten in regards to how much they just got zerged in wvw. Guess what, emotions run high-and people tend to talk.

Frankly I don’t see why anet cares at all. Don’t like swearing, don’t play an mmo. No mater how much you “censor” it-People can still offend others. Calling me a Jack-kitten is still as rude as calling me a Kitten.

SO really-in conclusion he is in as much fault as you are. Don’t subject yourself to torment, and you won’t be tormented. It’s not a difficult concept.

Yes, and I would never report somebody for an off-hand remark like that. As you said, there’s a certain freedom in being able to swear up a storm when things go wrong, and being able to hear our friends, or even strangers, vent like that is precisely why people like me leave the profanity filter off. For people who don’t like seeing any foul language at all, that’s what the filter is for. (And it’s a safe bet that they weren’t behind the report that got the OP suspended.)

Mantis didn’t go into the details of why he (she?) was suspended. It could have been a case of somebody taking offense to a term or phrase, even though it wasn’t directed at somebody specifically, or maybe they were using more risque language that would be appropriate for the Say/Map channels. While I’d be inclined to take the OP’s side in such a situation, it’s ultimately still in ANet’s interests to maintain as clean a chat channel as possible; we can always stick to Guild/Party/Whisper for more risque talk.

if all swearing is banned then they shouldn’t have had an option to turn it off at all… unless you think that it is logical to say " you can’t swear, but if you want to watch other people violate the tos and swear you can?"

i don’t accept your argument.

You missed the point of my original reply. I don’t think that swearing, in itself, is bad or that it should be banned. It’s when it’s used in a hostile or abusive manner that’s the problem. If a guildie, or even a stranger, were to say “Kitten, I did CoE and got nothing from the end chest again!” or “Kittenkittenkitten, soooo close to killing this boss and then his Veteran adds respawn and I got downed! KITTEN!”, I don’t have a problem with that. (In fact, I leave my profanity filter off just so I can commiserate with them over such experiences.)

But if someone were to go off on a tirade about how they got kicked from a dungeon group and they were probably all [sexual fluid]-guzzling, [ethnic minority] [alternate sexuality] [excretory body parts] who should all die in a fire, then yes, I believe that is over the line. They’re frustrated; I get that. But that’s still no excuse for attacking somebody (who may have been completely justified in that kick) and promoting hateful ideals.

Huh. I never thought about this, but yeah — it’s entirely contradictory to allow players to choose to disable profanity filters, and then punish use of profanity. Either profanity is allowed, or it isn’t. What’s next, they patch in a graphical option to allow nudity in the game, and then ban people who remove all their gear?

ANet, if you are going to ban people for it, don’t allow it.

Players, if you’ve disabled the profanity filter, don’t report players for swearing.

I see people are trying to argue about this from the side of offensive intent, or directed insults and harassment. However, that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with swearing. Some of the most offensive and troll-ish comments I’ve seen in these forums have not used profanity at all.

I agree, people who get upset by profanity yet turn off the filter are mind bogglingly stupid.

For the most part, swearing IS allowed. The devs have stated before that they won’t ban someone for dropping the F-bomb in chat if they’ve died before managing to complete a skill challenge, or accidentally fell from a JP and have to restart it. Nor do they monitor private/guild chats unless somebody reported it. It’s all about context.

I’m willing to bet that in the vast majority of cases, the people who were banned for “inappropriate language” were banned because they were insulting or harassing other players, not because of the language they were using.

They probably should just make the swear filter mandatory, but either way you’re an idiot if you think the existence of the swear filter gives you the right to ignore the rules that clearly state “no swearing.” Just because the game mechanics allow you to do something does not give you license to do it if the developers tell you not to. There are plenty of cases where this very simple logic applies.

You can “bot,” for example, but you will get banned for it. You can make a clever name that implies something naughty while bypassing the word filters, but you will get banned for it. And yes, you can swear, but don’t expect not to get banned for it. Take some responsibility for your own life choices.

“If you spent as much time working on [some task] as
you spend complaining about it on the forums, you’d be
done by now.”

Well said, most ppl tent to turn off the filter if they don’t mind swears… but when its directed to a a person with the mean of offending / harassing him/her, then that is when you get reported and banned. I know that’s not Anet though but its should be .

It’s not hard to use appropriate and respectful language. There’s no excuse for using inappropriate language publicly. The rules are pretty clear.

You’ll know better for next time, hopefully.
