Why would you lose the transmute? You may have to transmute it again, but that’s your choice for wanting that look. Each character can earn a finite number of transmutation stone, but ultimately they should be more than enough to accomodate any characters appearance needs.

Indeed, nothing is stopping players from transmuting ad nauseum in the 1-79 range. The amount of transmutation stones a player can obtain purely by completing personal storyline and zone completion is vastly higher than the number of stones a single character is likely to use.
At 80 it’s a bit more problematic. The only stones which work for transmuting 80 gear are fine stones, attainable through the Gem Store or BLCs only. This in and of itself is the reason appearance gear slots aren’t likely to be implemented, however. Any change to one of the few things players actively pay for in the game is highly unlikely due to backlash. If implemented, appearance slots would render wasted any gems (and therefore any actual-world currency potentially used) spent on transmutation stones.
I’ve already posted a topic on whole transmutation system, however it seems like people aren’t very interested in this kind of stuff.
As of now I can say transmutation system is terrible as it punishes you for transmuting stuff (since there is no sense of progression and you only loose cash and items).
This is how transmutation system could look like:
You have cosmetic armor slot (just like town clothing now). You use transmutation stones to copy the appearance of an item into such cosmetic slot. This does not destroy the item, appearance of which you copy. There should be several panels for cosmetic armor, allowing you to have multiple outfits you can switch between. Cosmetic armor could be overwritten. That way Anet could still make monies on transmutation stones. I would even start to buy them from the item shop!
Just transmute wisely, at the end of the day you can usually fix anything you mess up.
Except legendarys, Never ever transmute a legendary!!!
Except legendarys, Never ever transmute a legendary!!!
Why do you say that? Isn’t a legendary just a skin, and especially with the latest patch I thought I read that during transmute weapons will retain the higher rarity between the two items.

Because, when ascended weapons make it into the game, legendaries will be boosted in power/stats…unless you transmuted the skin to something else and destroyed your legendary.
All legendaries have the same stats. So if you transmuted it, you lost your true legendary and it will not get updated.
i like wardrobe…. i hope they make it
Transmute stones generate gem purchases, doubt it’ll happen.
I would like to suggest this:
…
Edit: Okay now I’ve read what ‘Smelly Bookah’ wrote, and it’s just the same. I agree with that pungent asura.
DCUO styled “style selector” is my suggestion. I hate transmute stones, but I would pay $30 for a wardrobe to keep all my looks per character.

I see what you mean. If the new patch works as intended I suppose if you transmute now the new item will retain legendary rarity and would thus be correctly updated in the future if ascended weapons are implemented. I agree though this would be pretty risky to take on faith. Much safer to not transmute a legendary and just wait.
