Remove red circles please
So because you can’t hit people with a brain at long distances with an AoE, you suggest they implement a change that would have extensive effects across every aspect of gameplay? Does that seem reasonable to you?
Grenade, btw.

I know my suggestion is very class based. But anyway.
I dislike the red circles. I play an Engineer and use granates. I have a 1500 range which is great. But I never hit someone on this range.
I throw my granate and it takes 3sek until impact. But even if my opponent is not looking at me he knows the impact place.
It is hard to guess where I have to throw the granate on an constant moving target. But it does not make sense to guess and to try to throw the granate into the correct direction I will never hit because of the red circles on the ground warning every opponent.
Granates are really useful in close combat.
This was a good laugh, thank you
It is grenade(s) not Grante(s) and it is Sec not Sek.
I play an Grenade engineer and I have no issues with the red circles, I can hit my target 8 of 10 times. Sounds like you just need to invest more time into learning your character better than coming on wasting time asking for senseless suggestions like this

Sorry, but since you were mean about the spelling thing I can’t let it go. Not an Grenade engineer. An engineer, or a grenade engineer, but not an grenade.

Fair enough I made a small grammatical error although Grante is no where similar to Grande, and Sec or seconds is no where near Sek. Also I was not the only one to point out the spelling. But I accept the fact I wrote An instead of A.
The OP’s spelling was bad, but they have a valid point. The red circles are a cop out. They should actually show the effects. If you didn’t see the person throwing the grenade sucks to be you. If you weren’t watching the boss barf out the green noxious goo you are now standing in sucks to be you. Right now you don’t have to pay attention you just look at your feet to see if there is a red circle.
Basically anything that does aoe has a disadvantage because you get a red circle before it hits you. You don’t see a bullseye over your toon when someone is shooting an arrow at you.
This isn’t Counter-Strike. I’m roleplaying a character, who likely has better reflexes and situational awareness than me. The red circles are a good representation of this.

..anyways, I think if rangers can place traps that don’t have a red circle until you step in them then it’s not such a crime to ask for grenades that don’t have a red circle.

Traps are, by nature in RL, meant to be invisible ( no red circles). Grenades = a visible projectile (In RL, you can guess where its destination lays). Hope that helps.
In RL you have to be paying attention to the person throwing the gernade to have any clue as to where it lands. Looking at the ground with your back turned to them does not give you any indication of where it is going to land.

Sorry for my spelling.
But I do not belive you that you can hit a target 8 of 10 times. In sPvP/WvW the people pay attantion and it is so simple to move out of every red circle. It is impossible to hit a good player on range with grenades. I bet on a range of 1000 in 1on1 you hit 1 of 10 times a good player with grenades.

This. So no matter how great your RP reaction time is, you would still need to see the person throw the grenade.

It is completely unreasonable to ask someone to code a game that shows red circles only if you are looking at it. Time better spent somewhere else in the game, aka expansions.

I also play a Grenade engineer, in PvP and Wv3, and not it is not that hard to hit. Sure one on One is a bit harder if your trying to do it at a long distance but closing that distance reduces the time they have to react, not to mention they have two dodges even if it was one on one sure they dodge two and then they can’t anymore. A good player can make a grenade attack hit 8 out 10 times.
In Wv3 there is a lot going on, it is easy to get confused in a zerg it is easy to get hit in a zerg. In fact In my opinion it is easier to get kills in Wv3 against zergs as a ranged AoE class since so much is going on it is hard to see what is going on.
I say the red circles are just fine, like another poster said your supposed to be a hero with awareness and reflexes, not some trained basic solider, fyi I am former military and went into specialized training, most normal soldiers have basic awareness on a battlefield.
I also hit and kill people with grenades on range. And Grenades are very powerful. And it is not the point if you hit with a grenade 8 of 10 times or not.
The point is, if you throw a grenade your opponent gets a big sign:
“Please move out of this area you will get damage in 3 sec. Thank you”
And I guess the game would be more fun if you do not get this sign.
For example you are inside of a keep. Outside are 20 people killing everything they see.
I will not be able to kill them all, but I will harm them or make it more difficult for them.
As a ranger, necro, engineer or ele you paint nice red cicles on the ground and never hit someone.
You can go and try to shoot at them but they will kill you as soon as they see you barrage, Ice spike or all the other skills never hit someone so you have to create a line of sight

This is incorrect, I play a Ele and a Necro and a engineer is Wv3, and all my Aoes hit zergs. I am not sure what issues your having but on Blackgate when facing SoR and JQ, they don’t zerg in 15 to 20 they zerg in 40 to 60+ and when you have 40 people through AoE’s and spells and skills it creates a fog of war effect, pretty soon the " Red painted circles disappear. This happens in reality also, WW2 storming the beaches of Normandy platoons of men have accounted that they were pinned down by nest fire. They had 6 nest pinning them down two to the front one further back and two to the right. The smoke the right and front and charge the nest, at the last second 3 of the 15 men realize there is a 7th nest to the left and the platoon is in danger, they call out for a halt assault but no one hears or reacts. 12 men are gun down in viscous horrid agony.
Point is here the one nest to the left was not hidden was out in the open plain as day, yet 12 men ( 15 at first ) never noticed it because of the Fog Of War affect.
The same goes for Wv3, get enough people there and enough going on and red circles blend in and are missed. In TPvP I have no issues using my grenades and killing people. it is harder but doesn’t make it impossible

On topic, I fail to understand why grenades are thrown at your target or in the direction you are facing in water, while on land they have to be ground targeted. If they worked on land they way they do in water, I might actually go back to playing an engineer.
It is completely unreasonable to ask someone to code a game that shows red circles only if you are looking at it. Time better spent somewhere else in the game, aka expansions.
I disagree about the reasonability. There are other games with the option to turn off animations for your allies. This would be similar. especially when it creates such a big disadvantage to certain classes and builds. And creates such huge advantages to other classes and builds that don’t use that mechanic. e.g.; Big chance to dodge all gunfire without looking at anything beyond your own immediate area. So it actually seems pretty reasonable to me.
Not seeing it as a disadvantage
1v1 two of your AoE’s miss the rest hit, force your opponent to dodge before you unless.
In Large scale battles like shoebox said Fog of War
Not seeing it as a disadvantage
1v1 two of your AoE’s miss the rest hit, force your opponent to dodge before you unless.

These extra steps necessary are a disadvantage. Disadvantage is not synonymous with impossibility.
In one instance you don’t need to have situational awareness in order to operate as if you do, in another instance you do have to have situational awareness in order to operate as if you do. That’s a huge Huge (dis)advantage. But Cool, lets get fog of war to work with every build the same way and it won’t be an advantage. And “fog of war” doesn’t make it more likely for you to know what’s going on. So you should have less chance to dodge. “Fog of war” means you as the opponent should never see a red circle. if you do see a red circle, then clearly fog of war isn’t taking affect.
(edited by Dustfinger.9510)
Then your not realizing what the ideals and draw backs of fog of war is sorry
I’m a combat veteran. I know exactly what “fog of war” is. You, clearly do not. In order to simulate “fog of war” there should be no red circle. In order for “fog of war” to happen naturally, there tends to be high stress due to factors like an actual life of death situation. So the red circle actually serves to eliminate natural “fog of war”. Don’t talk about what you don’t know. It will always be obvious when you do.
I am a vet of the 75th ranger Reg 2nd Bat, and this is not real life, your not going to get true fog of war. There is a difference between game fog of war and real life.
Secondly one necro well or any other visual affects happening in a large scale battle is enough to hide the red circles. Even in 1v1 combat in this game people don’t always notice the red circles.
E.G.
Fractals Level 10 + Harpies do a knockback that has a red circle indicator attached to it even though it is clear as day and I hardly ever get hit by them, I see plenty of people get hit over and over and over again.
You don’t like the term fog of war fine, bottom line is good players are going to be able to dodge twice from a Red circle aoe, bad players wont, can’t tell you how many times I have hit with a “Red circle AoE” when no other distractions were present. In this case Grenade kits using a red circle but having no cool down on the primary attack is not hard to hit solo players, sure they dodge two of them but you still have 15 more coming before they can dodge again. Now you add Visual ( non see through ) AoE’s and you can now spam 1 into a crowed along with 2,3,4,5 with out worries that at least 5 of them will get hit.
AoE’s only hit 5 people regardless so when you throw an AoE into a crowd of 20 to 30 people I promise you will hit at least 5.
Again not sure what the problem is here, other than learn to play with the red circles, many players have I am sure you can also.
Great. So the only way ’fog of war" is a factor in this discussion is by exemplifying the huge advantages of those targeted by the red circles and by exemplifying the huge disadvantages against those that use them. Why bring up “fog of war” if you knew what it meant?
So as I already said, the red circle being a disadvantage is not synonymous with it being impossible to hit someone with but it is still a huge disadvantage, for the reasons I already laid out. The problem is that learning to play with the red circles is synonymous with learning to play with a huge disadvantage against you. Not impossible but also not unreasonable to ask for change.

A change that is not needed, I am sorry, I will not continue this discussion with you. I personally and the people I play with have never complained about the Red circles, a lot of the people I play with use Professions that use them. You and the hand full of people on here that seem to find it as a problem are in a hard spot. Cause up till this point I have only heard about this complaint once in 7 months of playing. So from my experience I am not seeing this as some major issue of the masses. As I do Wv3 all the time ( on Blackgate ranked 2nd in the world ) I never hear anyone complain about this. I am sorry it an issue for you and the handful here, I hope that you will one day be able to play through it with no issues and I wish you and the handful the best of luck.

Actually his rank has everything to do with his retort. What he is saying is some of the best players in the world don’t complain about it. Not that the game should go off of what the best players in the world can do.
But I play almost exclusively PvP ( Structured and tournaments ) and WvWvW and honestly this is the first time I have ever heard this complaint.
This is an un-disputable fact for you, not the whole of the player base. Others don’t have any issues with it, what kaimick has said is the fact that there are tons of affects going on in a large scale battle red circles are 90% of the time hidden and are not seen. therefore this should never be an issue. His counter argument for 1v1 also holds true.
Sorry to me it sounds as if your grasping for straws in trying to justify how red circles make for un-fair game play when from my experience no one has an issue with it besides ( like kaimick said ) the hand full of posters here. Also my experience is steamed from playing PvP and WvWvW and not hearing people complain about it. I would think if this was as serious as you are playing it out to be I would have heard at least one complaint about it ( not to mention a multitude ) with in the last 6 months.

Bolded is a contradiction.
No, it’s an undisputable fact that not needing to have situational awareness to dodge attacks in one case is a distict advantage over needing to have it to dodge attacks in another. In fact the need for dozens of animations to be going off in order for it not to be a disadvantage is also a disadvantage. Sounds to me that this entire argument about specific situations needing to happen for it not to be a disadvantage is a big grasp at straws.
It wasn’t a contradiction, it is a simple statement that the game rules are not governed by the best players. Just like the games rules and mechanics are not governed by the worse players.
Apparently you failed to see that people ( including my self ), by people I mean the players I play with. Have no issues with the red circles when the outside factors are not present. I have on multiple occasions bombarded players in TPvP with a grenade barrage ( despite the red circles ) and nearly killed them, if not killed them when it was a 1v1. They were able to dodge, but in the end the 2 dodges didn’t help them. So that isn’t an issue for the players I have played with ( as I have never heard anyone complain about it ).
In world versus world if it is not a large scale battle the same holds as if I am in hotjoins or tournaments, although in a large scale battle there is an added factor to it.
So why is it that the best players in the world have no issues with it?
So why is it that I have played for 6 months and reached rank 73 (SPvP ) and probably 800 hours of tournaments have I never heard any of these complaints?
I mean if it is such a dis-advantage as you say it is wouldn’t more players be complaining?
If you removed the red circles can we remove dodge, I mean the use of dodge will be obsolete if you never knew the attack was coming so that would be a useless feature. Not to mention Boss AoE in dungeons would be really challenging and I am sure there would be a lot more wipes. Then again 5 people could hold off a 50 man zerg with a surprise ambush that would take minute if not more to locate the source, by that time they are dead. That sounds legit, personally I think from your statements that your on a very low ranked server for WvWvW, and your getting stomped into the ground. So instead of honing your skills like the top 6 servers in the world have done your just asking for something to be changed because you feel it needs to be.
I could be wrong that is just my assumption, I don’t really care what server your on or how good you are. Although I would love to see my questions answered.
In RL you have to be paying attention to the person throwing the gernade to have any clue as to where it lands. Looking at the ground with your back turned to them does not give you any indication of where it is going to land.
Well said,
I stopped reading at this post as I wanted to reply (so if someone already said this sorry.)
How about remove red circles when you are not facing the target? Have the circles appear only when they enter your peripheral vision?
It wasn’t a contradiction, it is a simple statement that the game rules are not governed by the best players. Just like the games rules and mechanics are not governed by the worse players.
It’s not a statement of what is, it’s a statement of what shouldn’t be. So it is a contradiction because you validated his statement with those same terms that you later described as what shouldn’t be. since he probably isn’t one of the best players out there then the implcation is that if you can’t base things off what they do, why would that ever be a valid response? it wouldn’t because the two are in conflict.
Apparently you failed to see that people ( including my self ), by people I mean the players I play with. Have no issues with the red circles when the outside factors are not present. No, I get it. Not everyone will be on the same page. Fact of life, truth of the universe. I get it. I don’t even dispute that there are people that you describe who exist. I also accept it. Not sure what your point here is.
In world versus world if it is not a large scale battle the same holds as if I am in hotjoins or tournaments, although in a large scale battle there is an added factor to it.
So why is it that the best players in the world have no issues with it?
You don’t know they don’t. All you know is that you haven’t heard they do. That is far from the same thing.
So why is it that I have played for 6 months and reached rank 73 (SPvP ) and probably 800 hours of tournaments have I never heard any of these complaints?
You don’t pay attention? To caught up in your own self glory? Hard to notice if your not the one playing the use of the red circles? everyone you play with enjoys the added benefit of being able to dodge those attacks that use them? Any number of answers.
I mean if it is such a dis-advantage as you say it is wouldn’t more players be complaining?
It’s definatly a disadvantage. I’ve proven it and you aren’t argueing against it because you see how ridiculous the aregument was. How big of a disadvantage does it need to be in order to qualify for suggested change? That’s up to each individual. So, no, because only a small percentage of mmo players even use the forums to begin with.
If you removed the red circles can we remove dodge, I mean the use of dodge will be obsolete if you never knew the attack was coming so that would be a useless feature. So you’re saying you are unable to dodge unless there is a red circle telling you that there is an attack. The animation isn’t enough and apparently it’s too hard to pay attention and you don’t deserve to get hit if you’re not paying attention. Got it.

Oh, so it was just a personal attack then. That isn’t desperate at all. And surely it lends credibility to your real points. <——- I’m saying that your argument is weak.
Well said,
I stopped reading at this post as I wanted to reply (so if someone already said this sorry.)
How about remove red circles when you are not facing the target? Have the circles appear only when they enter your peripheral vision?
No no. If you have to look at the player you might as well remove dodge!!!
…….Aparentlly, is the argument against this. :P
Just to give the dead horse one more kick…
My intent was to show no red circles at all. Right now you see this big huge boss, and its attack is not breathing an epic cone shaped blast of fire. It is making red circles appear on the ground. Stepping out of red circles is a console game mechanic from 10+ years ago, and IMO looks out of place from the rest of the game. I doubt the game has an appropriate collision detection, and it may not be practical to implement in the near future but it would make the game look cooler.
I would equate turning off the red circles with turning off tracers on an FPS game. Some people would rage quit if that happened, but others see it as a crutch. Once again, I don’t think they had a decent collision mechanic to implement this, but it is still a good suggestion IMO.
LOL!
This truned into a reel speel check seshion!! wOOt!! I halv the most grammatrical errurs!!
:P
Sorry, your errors are all spelling, which =/= grammar.
On topic, I fail to understand why grenades are thrown at your target or in the direction you are facing in water, while on land they have to be ground targeted. If they worked on land they way they do in water, I might actually go back to playing an engineer.
LOL, mine is still bigger than yours! :P
