The Mesmer Greatsword skill #1 out to have piercing for these reasons.
#1. All other skill slot 1 skills on 2 handed weapons
a.) already have piercing or some other form of AoE damage (either bounces or straight area of effect) -or-
b.) have traits that give all the attack skills on those weapons piercing(warrior & ranger)
#2. The other slot 1 skills on two handed weapons that already have piercing (necro staff and engineer rifle) have equivalent if not better DPS vs a single target than the Mesmer GS. (Keep in mind they have 1/2 the cast time of the Mesmer)
#3. There would be no real changes to balance in PvP seeing as other classes already have this ability in big WvW zerg situations and piercing really doesn’t make that much of a difference in small scale sPvP battles. It would also help the Mesmer compete with other classes in PvE when tagging mobs for loot.
Notice how I am completely not mentioning how unreliable 90% of the Mesmer AoE damage really is and how much this little change would help.
