Update 5.9.2013: getting better ANet, still way to go!
A Lannister always pays his debts – For everyone else, there’s Mastercard.
The game is ~1 Month old and the different capitals are dead already.
Everybody is in lionsarch and nobody cares about those beautifully designed cities anymore, except for world exploration.
Please give us something that makes us want or have to visit the old cities more often.
e.g. a mystic forge or something!
You could also take the MF from Lionsarch and bring it to the capitals instead.
Lionsarch will always be visited because of it’s position in the world. But the other cities really need some attention
Lion’s Arch is a central hub that is used to recruit to as many people as possible, find groups with ease, and many other things. You could find some way to “force” players into the other cities, but the same thing will happen — only instead of Lion’s Arch, it’ll be Divinity’s Reach or Rata Sum or… you get the point.
I understand where you’re coming from, I really do, and I’m definitely not against ANet giving us more incentive to visit and relax in the other cities, but the why of it is ultimately a moot point.
City events, please. Ones that reward town clothes and other non-combat related fun stuff.
I suppose having capital-specific activities is a step in the right direction. If you want to do Keg Brawl, go to Hoelbrak. In future patches, Polymock would be a great addition to Rata Sum, some kind of game between the three Charr legions would be interesting for Black Citadel, and maybe a dream-like activity would be interesting for The Grove.
There should be events in the cities too: robbers, rebels, bandits, animals escaping from circus, zombie/ghosts attacks, malfunctioning golems, etc
As much as I like the idea of city events (in the vein of Ronah’s suggestion), you have to remember that they’re meant to be a break from the rest of the world. Implementing them would mean they either need to be secluded to a very specific area or not present any danger to those standing around.
I have an idea that will do this. read my post titled – Idea for building a stronger server community

I was thinking of non-combat events, resulting in said, non-combat rewards. No one would be dragged into them involuntarily, just because the were in the vicinity.
Divinity’s Reach in the rp server is always full, sometimes it will take me up to 30 minutes on a really busy day just to get to the main server.

Oh, absolutely, these would be great. What I meant, though, were events like what Ronah was suggesting, which I assume would have robbers attacking citizens and “stealing” items, then combat ensues, etc.
Sorry about that, my own fault for not making myself clearer!

This is a good point. As a workaround which would free everyone from the “gather to group” mentality, give us a “CITY” chat channel instead of just MAP. This frees those just looking to connect for an instance from having to physically be in Lion’s Arch.
I would love to have capital-related events. It would be a lot of fun to participate in, and after all of the (for example) Norn have left home, when they’re city is suddenly under attack, no matter where they are in the world, they need to return to save the city, because push come to shove it’s still home.
I too would like a few more city events, particularly of the non combat variety, like rescuing cats from trees, giving some kid advice on dealing with bullies, chasing and capturing (but not physically attacking) a purse snatcher. Stuff like that, the usual cliche hero downtime stuff.
Anybody remember Beyd from Breath of Fire 3? Agreeing to do something like that would be a laugh riot. Agreeing takes you to the guy’s back yard to train him, and you can eventually put him up against his rival to see how he does. "Woops, maybe 100b was a little too much for poindexter on his first training session..."
Lion’s Arch is the easiest to go to. Ofc it’s the most visited. If ANet removes to capital city waypoint fee we’d start seeing more traffic for example in rata sum which has nicer npc locations than what LA has.
Lots of people predicted this before the game was released. The cities are huge and detailed, but there’s almost nothing to do there. They need events, mini-games, seasonal festivals, guild halls and / or “distant quests”.
By “distant quests” I mean something that’s completely missing in GW2 (outside the personal story), which is tasks where the objective and the related NPCs are not near each other. For example, have an NPC that asks players to retrieve artefacts from some distant region (or even from some dungeon). Once the player delivers, give him some XP / gold / karma and perhaps trigger some short event in the city itself (ex., enable a new vendor selling fun items for a couple of hours).
People usually get atracted to the cities that have the “extra things” compared to the others, and are in the good location.
p In GW2’s case you have no reason not being in L.A. by default.
How the problem could be dealt with?
I really like the Idea of City Events.
Even Events in your Private Part (lol) cood be nice and also combat related (Bandit takeovers, etc.)
Non combat events could be hide and seek, producing things (Equip the Town Guard, bring Weapons, Armor and Food)
It could even be a huge chain like something corrupting the Armor of the Guard → Find it → restock the Guards armor etc.
Right now it’s not fun at all to set a food to the major cities except Lions Arch.
I think Kite up there forgot the most important bit.
Make the other cities as easy to access as LA is, what with the WvW shortcut and the Mists and the access from all cities…
It would have to be non-instanced events.
Norn keg brawl doesn’t seem to bring many people, and anyone that does to do that won’t be around.
City-wide events that make people walk all over the city like “Find the lost pets”, “root out the infiltrators/spies” or “play hide and seek with the cubs/kids/children/saplings/progeny” would work better.
City Events!! Yes, and not just stupid things like daily cooking quests, if you get my reference. Make the cities a cool place to hang out, not just a stopping point for daily XP. Fun, non-combat DEs would be just the thing. Maybe quests that involve the important NPCs of the city in a progressive way: ie – helping Queen Jennah prepare for a feast at the end of the month in Divinity’s Reach. Or cleaing the city & helping various krewes prep for a science expo in Rata Sum. End of month would culminate in something neat in the cities, perhaps just in your home instance if you participated.
City events, please. Ones that reward town clothes and other non-combat related fun stuff.
This would be awesome, also every city should have a big and awesome jumping puzzle like Lion’s Arch, but with scaling reward, something worth doing every day. Imagine jumping in the top tall towers of divinity’s reach!

City events would be great! Also more city mini games like keg brawling.

This!
They need global chat channels, maybe they have them and i just missed them. Things like LFG/trade
This thread is full of good stuff, keep it in the first page, i want to have more to do at cities other than craft, repair stuff and use the bank/trade
The gates and mystic forge will always make LA a hub, even if it didn’t have anything else. I don’t see a reason to craft, use the bank or the trading post in LA when it is easy enough to do these things in the other cities and each of the cities is just a short hop away through the gates. However taking something away from LA would cause resentment. Giving the capitals something LA doesn’t have would be better. I like the suggestion of guild-halls, and locating each guild’s hall in one of the capitals and having the themes available depend on the capital it is located would be a great way to do this, especially if guild bank access was then transferred to the guild hall instead of being located in the normal banks. I also like the idea of the cities being centers for more extensive quest chains. There could even be procedurally generated level 80 fetch-quest chains, since they are pretty rare in the rest of the game. Fetch-quests aren’t all bad—even the Holy Grail was a fetch quest. It is just that when they are the vast majority of all questing in a game they start to get old, and that isn’t the case here. Rather than or in addition to fetch-quests though, quests to learn advanced utility skills that could be substituted for the standard skills available for each weapon would be awesome.
