I’ve been contemplating for some time over why there is no chat supported /roll command in game, for example “/roll 100” which would simply generate a random number between 0-100.

Such commands would be of an enormous help to the GW2 role playing community, as it enables dungeon masters to run role playing events without the need for an external website, or actual die.

I myself find to be enormously helping in DMing RP events, and could be used more casually in IC [In character] roleplay games of chance such as playing dies with an unpredictable outcome.

I digress on it’s uses however, and would simply pose the following:

Why do you think there is no such mechanic supported in the chat?

Is it even possible to implement?

it would be of interest to be to hear others thoughts on the matter. People who prefer PVE and PvP could surely find uses from it as well.

i feel a /roll ability is something that should be in anything that has RPG anywhere in the title, which includes MMORPGs. a d100 is the basic (and limited), but there should also be options for d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, and d2. the standard RP dice that come in any tube.

the problem, however, is that the only stat that would actually support the dice rolls is crit percentage. everything else is entirely too high to actually be used by the players in any meaningful way, without the players needing to completely invent an entire system and translate those enormous stats into it. and even then, it would only cover direct combat. all of which is just plain absurd.

your best bet is to just download a free dice system, like dice-mage, and just use an external system from an actual RPG, instead of one that’s an RPG in name only. (which is almost every single MMO on the market, as well as future MMOs) but, at that point, gw2 becomes completely irrelevant to the situation, as you can do the same thing anywhere multiple people can all get together online, such as a chat room.

it’s downright pathetic that this is the state online roleplaying has descended into, but until game developers actually learn about the medium they’re creating in, this will be the bulk of the “wonderful RP opportunities” roleplayers will have to suffer through.

there are, and will be, a few exceptions to this. however, those are actual RPGs made into MMOs, not MMOs that tack RPG on at the end for marketing purposes.

+1 No reason not to have a few tools to help the rp community, would be nice to have a character biography too

I think it’s not in there due to how it was used in GW1 to help people get certain PvP titles. They would roll, losing team would forfeit, winning got a quick point towards the title. Since the only functional use it added to the game was something they didn’t like, I can see why they didn’t put it in there. Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be though.

Has this matter ever been addressed by a dev in GW2?

several months ago, one of the devs attended the guild summit on TC, and said how much they cared about the RP community and wanted to assist it and then……. nothing. not a word since that time, and nothing added for the benefit of RPers. which is pretty telling in and of itself.
