Reposted from the Guild Wars 2 Discussion forum (where it did not belong):

I’d really like a key bind that would cause me to run toward my current target. As a Guardian (read: no really great ranged attack options) in WvW, it’s extremely annoying to try to collapse on a target. Someone calls the target, I take the target, and then when it’s not immediately obvious what the target is because it’s behind me, I’m stuck frantically rotating my field of vision, scanning through eight bajillion particle effects to try to spot the bullseye.

I mean, it’s not absolutely necessary, but is there some reason this can’t be a thing? It’s just a directional auto-run. It would improve gameplay a lot, I think.

I’d love a “run to range” option both melee or ranged. They at least added melee assist in options so that yo miss less.

To reply to a few of the statements in the other thread:

No Thanks

I think it will dumb down the game.
Once you learn to control your character better and get a better battlefield awareness, your issue will not be a problem anymore
And that is actually the point of a more skill based pvp game

I firmly reject the implication that this is a problem with my skill level – it is not. It is an issue with the game’s insistance upon displaying frabjulous amounts of particle effects on the battlefield, and a direct byproduct of there being zerg v. zerg battles of upwards of 200 people at a time in close proximity. FYI, battlefield awareness is related to things like, “I’m overextended”,“We need to collapse the target in the backline”,“They’re caving, push harder”, and that type of thing. It does not have anything to do with “I can’t physically see my target even though I know roughly where it is and that it needs to die”.

I think the impetus is on you to explain how this dumbs the game down at all, or how it would lessen your enjoyment of the game in some measureable way.

Run to target, lol

Let’s not make Guild Wars 2 anymore casual than it already is

This is scintillating commentary, really, but I wonder if you might be able to explain how implementing a button that improves the gameplay experience significantly for one or more users while detracting from the experience of no users equates to making the game “casual”? Guild Wars 1 had this button, it was bound to the spacebar. Guild Wars 1 GvG was not “casual”, it was frenetic and awesome.

mikpet.7458

I just want to press one button to start fighting and then not anything else.
I mean, how am i supposed to roleplay while having to dodge, target, moving and pressing all these buttons.
Not even sure what they do

Obvious troll is, at this point, obvious. It has nothing to do with roleplaying. The extent of my roleplaying is my character name.

The main argument against this idea seems to be that it would make the game too easy. I don’t see how that’s a reasonable argument. It seems to insinuate that a significant amount of the “skill” of this game is based upon being able to find your target in a crowd. I do not see what’s skillful about that. I can do it 90 times out of 100 without issue, and when I am able to accomplish it successfully, I don’t feel as though I’m super-skilled, I feel as though I’ve been able to successfully do something very basic, something that the game should allow me to do without issue. It’s the 10/100 times that I am left spinning my camera around like an idiot because of a million particle effects that is extremely annoying, because the game is preventing me from achieving this basic task.

Yea, its a mess in big battles locating that called target.

Some kind of arrow at your feet pointing in the general direction would help.

Why dont they just make the game play itself for you? Seriously? Sure adding a more visible targeting icon (or a setting to adjust it yourself) would be nice but a follow, face, or stick option is just silly. Part of playing a character is actually being mobile.

I play a guardian too.

I’m against such an option! And from what you’ve told your actual problem is finding your target what I can understand, but I don’t think this should be handled by such a thing like “running to target”.

I’m missing the old aura target UI around the encounter that we had before we got those circles on the ground… I think this was way better to keep track of your target in the masses. A circle on the ground is just going to get lost with all the characters on the ground…

I think that this would became things easier for Botters. Thing about ir:

R auto walk.
TAB → Run To Target → Attack AttacK
repeat…

sad but true :-(

It seems like the root of the problem is visibility. Fix the visibility issue then. (eg. some have asked for an option to remove or tone down effects.)

At first I was for this option too, but now, after i got used to the game, it doesn’t feel anymore needed for me. you are a melee but all of you have range weapons. Use combination of them and you won’t miss the targets or need to be near of them. it meant to be played like that, not just hitting the sword button

this is basically how GW1 worked. Anet choose to go a different direction with GW2 and force the player to do everything for the toon. One solution to the 100+ dense pack furballs is implement friendly fire damage. When AOE damages everybody including the caster, folks won’t be so quick to run into the massive ball of fire.

I understand what you’re saying, but that is none of my concern. Stopping bots is ANet’s job, and if they’re doing it by restricting a useful feature set, they’re doing it wrong. Conincidentally, I don’t think that’s why this feature isn’t already in the game. I think it’s because…

Yep, and I think they need to re-evaluate this particular decision, although I agree with that strategy in general. I think there is literally no way that they’re going to turn on friendly fire damage, as life is pretty hard as an ele already from what I’m told.

Saying an idea is silly doesn’t make it so. Please show me why it’s silly. If it’s really silly, that should be simple for you to do in a way that is fairly airtight. Also, part of playing a character is actually being mobile… lolwut. I didn’t say anything about not being mobile. I have no trouble moving my character. Running to Target does not mean you can’t do anything else until you get there. It simply sets you off on the right path. You’d be free to interrupt that vector to choose a new vector manually if you wanted to. Congrats on playing a guardian too, that means that you know exactly what I’m talking about or have never played in an organized group in the middle of WvW, where a target might get called that’s behind you (which you have absolutely no way of knowing).

I feel that if its an ability that isn’t in range the character should walk the distance needed for that ability to be useful.

Such a feature would make botting much easier than it already is.

Unfortunately, this is a case of why we can’t have nice things anymore.

Both GW1 and GW2 had and have bot problems. Basing game play decisions on bot worries is rather pointless. Given the speed at which bots showed up, the “toon has no brains” model of GW2 didn’t slow them down much. Where money is to be had, motivated criminals will find a way or hire someone to find a way. Look at how fast accounts were hacked. There are a bunch of things Anet could do to lower the player’s workload and still keep much of the GW2 flavor they seem to want. I hope they do at some point as all of the required continuous button mashing makes my wrist sore. When the joystick I ordered for MechWarOnline shows up, I will experiment with mapping buttons to it in hopes the different motion will help.

Damaging friendly fire would change the game flavor and not just for eles. Diablo 1 had FF damage and I can’t count the times I killed a party mate with my thief/rogue bow using toon. With the right bow you could get 3 arrows in the air at long ranges, only to have the fighter step in the way.

I feel like this problem could be solved(Much as I said in teh other thread) by making your target much more obvious without having to press buttons(I think it’s Ctrl+T?) to put a big marker on their head.

Not saying something obnoxious, but more than the tiny little green arrow we get now.

Another suggestion could be that when you press t, if a target is called, to take that target and also turn you to face the target so you at least know which direction the target is called.
