Since there are now many very rare living story event skins with no future drop opportunities, I suggest a means to retain the exclusivity of the first wave of legendary weapons:

1. Remove existing precursor drops so they will disappear from the market over time
2. Create replacement precursors at the same time
3. Create new recipes matching the original, but using the new relevant precursor

Result:

1. Current owners won’t feel that any recipe change diminishes their effort
2. Current players in the process, won’t feel like the wasted their efforts
3. Players who have precursors can still make the legendary they started on
4. Players without will have the option to go either way until the original stock disappears
5. The original Legendary group will have that “I was here back when…” exclusivity.

This can be done without even announcing that the original precursors are not dropping, to avoid an news related shocks on precursor prices.

Of course, there will always be people who will scream about how they want Kudzu so bad and will quit if the opportunity is taken away.. But hey, they will be first in line to make the new kind if they have all the materials on hand.

This is a “casuals” mmo, there may be a few exclusive skins for people who participated in living story stuff but they won’t remove the ability to create the current legendaries.

Yeah, this would only punish those who have not been lucky enough to get a precursor yet. Not to mention pretty much guarantee you’ll never get one of the current legendaries ever again.

If you think legendaries are already expensive try buying twilight when it’s 21,290 gold and that’s the only way your going to find it because dusk is 20k gold.

This is not needed, not wanted by ~80% of the community, and smells of elitism. In simpler terms. NO.

If I understand the idea, the OP wants to preserve the “specialness” of the existing legendaries, as ANet adds new legendaries and new methods of finding precursors.

I applaud the sentiment, but I think market forces will take care of that in the long run. If obtaining the new crop of legendaries/precursors is indeed less random, people will focus on those weapons and pay less attention to the old ones. The demand for the old precursors will drop, as people decide to refocus their efforts. That will mean a reduction in the creation of old school legends.

In addition, through natural attrition, many of those with old school legends will stop playing or start showing off other skins. The result will be that the older legends will be seen less often, even if ANet does nothing about the recipes. I think that makes them exclusive enough.

No.

Anything you do will have less value over time as people find better ways to get it done, guides are created, and better ways to do it are added.
When new players arrive, they should not feel the ‘regret’ of missing out things for arriving late. Not everyone is checking every game all the time. They should be able to do what the very first player did after they logged in.

If you want the “I did it first so I have more merit” feel, you should consider things like asking for timestamps in achievements and legendaries (“Crafted/Achieved on [Date]”), or taking screenshots and uploading them to a site in which the date gets recorded and it can’t be tampered with.

i put some thoughts and your reasoning is silly

zerorogue: Please understand that you do not speak for the community as a whole (or even 80% of them). Using this method with the intent of making your argument sound more valid does more to minimize it than anything else. Using your own RNG to determine the long term value of items doesn’t do much either.

Illconceived Was Na: Thank you for reading and offering a thought out observation! It do agree that over the long term, the number of players with the original Legendaries will decline, and perhaps even more after new, potentially more appealing ones, appear. My focus is toward the exclusivity of the skin, in the same manner that events skins. That said, the event skins may be accessible again if the items required to purchase them from the vendor re-appear, so they are potentially not lost forever.

MithranArkanere: We already have the regret argument with living story events, and I am firmly on the camp of “you snooze, you lose.” This is because I am a business owner and do feel it is a valid means to encourage people to get in while the gettings good

On the converse token, what about the regret of people who invested a large chunk of time into creating one or more Legendary weapons, which becomes minimized by every Johnny come lately carrying one around? There are those who spend real dollars to purchase Legendaries, but as I have stated, it’s quite obvious who does and who actually worked for them, when you watch them play.

It would seem you misunderstood what I said.
First off, I don’t speak for the community nor intend to. It does not take a official poll to know people want rare items, and for Guild Wars 2 Legendaries are as rare as they get.

Secondly, I am not speaking of personal experience, I have not attempted to acquire a precursor yet. Again It should not need to said, precursor items drop very rarely. I don’t think any right minded individual would dispute that.

What I was remarking on, strangely being the one thing you ignored in my argument. Was the fact if you removed these precursors It would only benefit that small percentage of the community that has legendaries, and would further to invalidate all the efforts of those who have yet to acquire one.

The fact is this is all a case of trying to shoot the fox before it even reaches the farm. We don’t know what’s going to happen within the next six months, we only know that they are going to be a more visible path to legendaries. A path that will require a time sink. It could take 3 days to get a precursor, or 3 years. Without additional details this entire argument is invalid.

sorry Spock
i didn’t wanted to troll you, you are trolling people by suggesting removing precursor drop from the game for the solely purpose of being one of the few “special” persons that have one.
isn’t this emotive enough from you?
i also said i have one because otherwise my answer could seem biased by the fact that i want one.
i have one because i like, not because i’m the only one that can have it.

but yeah, call my language emotive… i’m a human after all
