It seems Karma rewards are intentionally prevented from sale (for gold) or salvage (for materials). However, why not make them possible to sell back for a wee bit of Karma? As it stands, destroying them after a few levels of use is a real let down.

You can still get a use out of karma items once you replace them with better equipment:
Put them in the Mystic Forge!
