Social solution to Mounts - "Carpooling"
Hm, I thought of something just from the title that I think would be nice… Have an option for people in parties to all transfer to the same waypoint for a reduced cost.
haha i like this
I’m from the NO MOUNTS!!!-camp (mostly because of the “speedbuff” issue) but this sounds pretty fun. I just imagine a bunch of people sitting on one of those packbulls.
So you want a Guild Wars 2 version of the “Vengabus”?
The Vengabus is coming
Counter Strike boys are jumping
Lion’s Arch to Ligacus Aquilo
An intercity disco
The wheels of steel are turning
And fortress lights are burning
So if your looking for party
Get on and move your body
i honestly fail to see the point..
I’d like to see mounts in the game. But more than that I would like to see improvements to transmutation system for example, as well as other already existing things.
As for this thread though, I think most of the ideas are terrible. Mounts are meant to give speed… Also, there can be both mounts and WPs. They wouldnt affect each other in a negative way. They would just serve different putposes (for example u would use WP to quickly get somewhere for an event for example). World of Tyria is beautiful, and I think mounts would complement it. I dont like that you are forced to use WP to quickittenravel around. It kills both the immersion as well as scale of the world. As for social aspect I think that every single mount should have the ability to carry at least 2 peeps at the same time. This wouldnt be mandatory though, if you like to ride on ur own, then go ahead. Reviving should be possible directly from the mount. You know there are alot of noobs who dont revive other players, even when you ask them for help, so I don’t really think mounts could possibly make it even worse.

I don’t like the requirement of carpooling but the rest I’m fine with. Going from your requirements and what not I’m picturing a Dolyak cart which I would suggest having a portable chest and I like the idea of it being left at the nearest waypoint if you leave it behind. However I would disagree with the idea of them not being allowed in cities and towns, NPC Dolyaks/Golems are always being led around towns.

This is a middle-ground solution I’m proposing. A lot of the pro-mounts will be unhappy with the requirements, but they are there exactly to counter the reasons why the anti-mounts are against implementation of any transport ingame.
I presented the reasons for this “limitations” at the very start of the topic.
People, feel free to add critiques to my suggestion, just remain on topic and please be constructive. After all, the point is exactly to instigate healthy discussion and maybe find a solution that makes everyone happy.
Thank you for your replies.

But whats the point of having mounts if they wont give u any speed boost?
I would like to see them in the game, with speed boost. I’d lik to travel around the map without using WPs as the completely spoil my immersion and totally kill scale of the world. It doesn’t mean they are bad though. They are great as they allow you to instantly get somewhere for an event. And thats why people would still use them. It’s terrible though that there are no alternatives if you just want to travel faster than on foot.
Just add them to the game with no speed boost purely for cosmetic purposes and prestige, make them hard to get like legendary weapons, but please don’t listen to OP we don’t need carriages behind them, this is not the wild wild west..!
OP’s idea is to overly complex and accomplishes very little , why would I need more people just to use my mount ? if that was the case I’d just as well use the stupid way point and get it over with.

do you think A-Net is going to botehr with modelling mounts for no profit?
If they ever implement mounts, most of them will be accessible through gem store. And then they HAVE to be functional, or else people wont buy them.
I mean come on people, think a bit before you post something.

Exactly what I was thinking. Requiring multiple people to use it without any speed buffs your better off not adding mounts. I’m fine with the pure cosmetic idea but if not that then we need a more standard mount idea. The OPs “middle ground” is to complex to be worth it.

they could make mountable transportation another type of event. maybe those escort things.
Objective: Protect your transpiration until it arrives at it’s destination.
you could pay maybe 10 copper, catch a ride! (as said by scooter in Borderlands), and protect it as it travels. longer distance travels would have you on the transport for longer periods of time, so players will invest in distance, while being able to protect the ride from enemies. it would also make various stops near way points or outposts, where players that paid x-amount can get off and be on their way.
once paid for your trip, you cannot get off, forcing players to stay on until their stop.
don’t want to pay 1 silver or more to travel? pay maybe 50 copper, and enjoy a slower (but event-able) experience, while earning something (like small amounts of karma per kill), and when you get off the bus, you get that total earned during the event. of course, there might be availability problems, but even the buses come around every 30 minutes to an hour. makes them a rare occurrence, yet fun and random paths can make it interesting, as well.
Caravan Oxen Bus,ride through Orr, anyone? trains can even be unique to the areas – asurans get hovercars, swamp lands get hover boats, charr and humans get trains, and norn areas get oxen and maybe wooden wagon made of HUGE hollowed out trees.
more content for everyone!

With all those restrictions, it sounds pretty pointless except for and RP/Coolness kind of thing. Which may be cool, actually.
Definately no speed-boosting mounts though. All they do is make it easier to skip content, and then everyone will complain that the game is too small.

Have you guys seen this thread?
The people that are against mounts present horrid, terrible excuses for not implementing mounts (i.e. The world will not be as big, the exploration will suffer, etc. They think this is true even without the speed boost….this, to me, makes less than no sense)
I completely agree with both of you that say mounts should be implemented normally and just don’t have the speed boost. I AGREE this would be a more than fine solution.
The problem is, the other 50% of the community, those against mounts, don’t agree with it. Even if you said “hey, what if mounts made us SLOWER?”, they would still say it would make the world smaller, ruin the social aspect, etc.
It’s like when someone calls a class or skill OP, without learning the counterplay or knowing effectively what it does.
People don’t take their time to actually think through these matters.
They keep saying that “[insert random feature here] will ruin GW2 because it ruined [insert random MMO from the 13th century here]”, even though the community, game AND mechanics are COMPLETELY different.
What I present in this topic is a COMPROMISE between both parties, as in my opinion, the cosmetic value of mounts is much more important than the speed boost, seeing that we have WPs and skills that grant swiftness.
Mounts, to me , grant immersion and RP value (i’m not a roleplayer, but it’s nice to think that people who mastered car engineering wouldn’t be running around ).

You people honestly think people will just run past people who are downed or dead any more than they already do just because they’re faster?
Here’s 2 key points for you.
1. Almost everyone already does pass you up when you’re downed
2. The mounts aren’t traveling at the speed of light, you can see downed people on your map, and anyone observant will notice a dead guy as long as you aren’t traveling 100,000 mph
It’s ok in terms of another way to “distinguish” characters from one another but actually providing a bonus ie moving faster around the world imo shouldn’t happen.
ps Asura should get a hover board.
This thread has some of the most ridiculous replies evah!
I mean come on!
Mounts with no speed bonus?? Whats the freakin point then? Unless you want to ride a charr.
But seriously, I’d much rather see completely new armor models instead.
Argument that mounts would kill scale of the world is invalid. WPs already did it. And some of the mapd layouts too (various structures and places too close to each other)

EXACTLY! I don’t understand how mounts became THE cause of anti social gaming.

Maybe it’s just me, but after playing GW1 for six years, getting rid of the WP completely to replace them with mounts is a big no for me.
I’m okay with mounts (assuming they can only be used in PvE and do not fly) as long as they don’t offer a speed boost.
If you guys say that mounts are pointless without the speed boost, then you guys are just being lazy. You complain about the WP’s ruining the immersion of the game, but if you are looking for something that will make you travel faster at a cheaper cost, then you are doing a slower version of WP. You will speed past the scenery – which you will not see as effectively as you would if you were running… It will be way easier to skip through dynamic events just by “mounting” away from mobs. Speed-boosted mounts different from WP in only one way – it’s a faster way of running. But mounts do not automatically mean more immersion in the game. In fact, I feel it’s the opposite.
If you guys are looking for a faster way to travel, how about you just think of something OTHER than mounts? That clearly seems to be the only point you see to them.
Please don’t derail the thread. This is in NO circumstances apologetic to “permanent speed boosts”.
I’m against speed-boosting mounts in GW2, makes no sense as the maps are small, we move fast, and the problem of “not arriving in time for the event” will not be remedied by having a 70% increased movement…this problem demands another kind of solution that doesn’t belong to this thread.
Please, if my idea seems stupid to you, than just present options, alternatives. It seems that to most anti-Mount people, compromising the speed-boost isn’t enough, that’s what gave me the idea for this thread.
No mounts, free waypoints, best solution.

People will still want mounts.
And, free WPs are likely to never happen.

Did I say there shouldn’t be gem store mounts ?
read properly before answering bull——t !
Just like most systems Arena.net has managed to implement them with a twist that doesn’t conform to standards so mounts with speed benefits is a big issue for a game like, finding a way to implement them having people buy them yet not providing a speed boost is logical for GW2 play style.
Should they have absolutely no benefits of course not !
just not the infamous speed boost.
