I agree whole heartedly. You put it a bit more politely than I would have, but this has got to be one of the worst times I have ever seen a game decide to push a patch. If you insist on doing it on a friday, do it in the morning so there might be staggard download requests rather than at peak usage.
Today’s patch launched an event. Pretty hard to implement/activate the event features without a patch.

Either way you look at it, it’s either the main bulk of the patch in the evening, as we saw, or the bulk of it in the morning and a smaller one in the evening. There’s no way to have no patch in the evening. I for one would rather let the content team have the work hours to finish/polish.
It’s a seasonal event, extraordinary circumstances. You were given more than adequate warning that the event would transpire. It’s unreasonable on your part to assume that the event would somehow launch patchless.
People will moan about just about anything it seems. It was bad enough reading the Wintersday thread elsewhere on this forum with people whinging all the way through because the patch and event were late in coming and now they’re moaning because it’s finally here?

We already know it was coming lol. I’m sure most of the players in GW2 are HAPPY that the patch came today so they could play tonight.

How come you have to do yours manually?
My GW2 client does the job for me, I don’t have to go phishing around on the GW website for it at all. Double Click the GW2 icon and it fires up, downloads, unpacks and applies any updates and I am done.
